      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Congrats Stu...

While I wasn't racing with the lead pack, I had some very tight racing with my pack Magool and A-Squared (From The Rail), right to the end.

A quick update from approx 03:00UTC.  I've done a quick search of the Group B boats that are still out there as it is a quiet Sunday morning here.

I'll calculate the times from leader when the coffee has kicked in. I think the question of whether the Africa route is quicker has been definitively answered.

Cheers TR

Good morning, here are the rankings as of roughly 00:00UTC.  I've tried to calculate the times behind stu for some of the Group B finishers, but the times I can access through the search function seem to be garbage.  mgksailor, please could you check what I have put down for spadadua and malamute (highlighted in yellow) - because I have significant doubts. Also can you explain how you did your mathematical genius thing to get the percentile overall.  The excel spreadsheet has defeated me!

Thanks mate!

Hi mate.  Sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope there are no repercussions.

I’ll add your finish into the results.

Hi guys -

Congrats to Stu and everyone else who posted strong finishes!  Tough leg!

I was on vacation last week and was able to check in often enough to see my boat to the finish, but not enough to spend time in the forum.  Most of the time, I was snorkeling with nurse sharks, cave tubing, and hiking Mayan ruins.

The bottom line with this leg was that there were two major places to "cut the corner".  The first was by not going as far West as Fernando de Noronha.  I did pretty well there, which was why a lot of people (including me) had me tagged as a potential top-5 finisher over by Rio.  Marcusbelgicus did better than me with that, and RQ-NAOS was way aggressive with it.  I'm sure there were others East of RQ, but you could only push it so far before the light spot in the High was too much to sneak around.

The second corner to cut was on the final turn East.  That was a killer for me, Marcusbelgicus, Toppen, and a bunch of others.  We put in extra Southing to get a nice hot line all the way to the finish, only to watch the system shift North, requiring us to come up to TWA 105 or so while those who were North of us could reach right down over us (Stu!).

FWIW, neither corner can routinely be safely cut.  In both cases, the forecasts suggested not cutting, and then the forecast changed after the fleet was committed.  Always tough to decide when to go for it and when not to.  The brutal thing in the case of the second corner cut, though, was that it actually wasn't too late for the trailing boats.  The leaders essentially got hung out to dry by the change in forecast.  La_Semillante is the only one I know of that was among the leaders and chose to not go as far South.

Not complaining.  You get used to it, and it's realistic.  It can be bad to get out front too soon.  The whole time I was Southing, I sensed it was too soon to feel optimistic.  Not that there's anything wrong with 51st.

Hello,

Here are the rankings from 22:30UTC.  Can anyone help me get into the Leg 1 game, so that I can confirm the finishes, thanks.

I'm guessing everyone finished in 48hrs.

Well...my skipper screwed the pooch and missed the "circle', so we had a nice picnic lunch at the little island near the finish. I am pretty sure Stay Thirsty picked me back up with that maneuver. :)

I've always wondered about that, since (even in VRO2), the screen wouldn't scroll up far enough to see the top.  What happens when you're up there if you point due North?  Does the speed go to zero, or does it say you're moving and not move?

Presumably you can circumnavigate pretty fast up there, though, right?

If it tells you that you've run aground, then I guess it isn't flat up there, but instead they put a small island on the cap to keep people from getting to the pole.  Easy to do if no one can see it anyway.  It could be that a variety of bugs surface when you get particularly close to the pole, which would be bugs you don't need to spend time resolving for any realistic races,  so putting an island there that no one can see would be the easiest solution.

It could crop up as an issue if they eventually do an imaginary race up there, though.  When Mangina won the Vendee, they allowed him to design a race (which I then apologized to him for beating him in, before it started, and then won).  That led me to wonder what I would design.  I was thinking maybe Haparanda, Sweden to Hobart, Tasmania via any route you want.  (I was thinking it would be in crappy slow boats like Hermione, too, but I don't think they'd let me design a race that would take a year).  I just thought it would be interesting to have a race where you could choose whether to go east or west to get to the other side of the planet, or even over the top, while also being able to decide whether to do your east or west early, with a pacific southing, versus late after an atlantic southing.  (I also pondered Lac Saint Pierre, in Quebec, which is as far down the St. Lawrence as you can go in the game, as a finish line via any route you want from a place somewhere on the West coast of the Americas.  Maybe Cabo San Lucas...  do you go Cape Horn or Northwest Passage?  If the decision is easy, then the starting point needs to change).  I heard, though, that (1) the "design it yourself prize" has to be do-able in a reasonable timeframe, which would kill both of those ideas, and (2) that they won't do anything that requires exceptionally difficult and frustrating "threading the needle" type navigation, such as completing the St. Lawrence or being required to pass through the middle of the Falklands.  So I'd probably wind up having to re-work the ideas.  I'd mostly want to have a race with majorly different options and no obvious right answer, around landmasses, with at least one option being some needle threading.  Maybe just a straight-up northwest passage trip in Class 40s.

Life at the top of the game is interesting,LOL. No grounding. Boat just stops, just points 000.00 True. Game controls all work, all read outs work as if the boats moving and Are adjustable. SOG is still there and changes with heading, the boat just can’t go further. In 3D the boat looks the same as if it’s moving lat and long do not change. As for east or west heading just a short time will add up fast going around the globe. I’m having a difficult time hitting the bearing straights... with no track line extending below the black out at times. Bugs? at places the boat got a little further north. .13min. There is no grounding or message. I got the feeling the vworld ends, no code. I was going down maybe I just do laps way up there.

Strangest thing is seeing over the top in 3D and from 85 N, 177 W to 30 S, 13 E through land. I’m headed true north and see Miss Magic Carpet at 30S as if she’s at the North Pole. Is it possible if this vworld is flat??? There is no dirt in 3 D is there.

Me Rongo SA

Hi all. Sorry for the hiatus. Here are the latest combined finish times. looks like we have 4 boats still hammering it out. As far as the overall percentile finish, it's a boats overall finish divided by 82,670, which is the total number of boats in the leg. I'd say we are a pretty strong group. All boats that have finished are in the top 10% worldwide, with 20 of us finishing in the top 1%.

Feel free to take a look and let me know if you see any errors. I'll likely tell you to fuck off and do it yourself. :)

Based on the results from Leg 1 which were given in Post #371 on 6 Nov, here are the overall results, assuming that the last four sailors finish in their current positions. If we do not have your results for leg 1, or you have retired from the group, then you have been given 54 which is all boats entered +1.

I say pretty much the same thing at the skippers' meeting every time I take PRO duty.  I enjoy doing it, but it seems that the folks who bitch about how the PRO handles things (unless the PRO is terribly incompetent or it's a major regatta) are the same people that never volunteer to do the job.  Thanks to both of you guys (and whoever else has been doing it) for running the numbers.

Probably best to decide before we go too much further:  Any throwouts in this scoring plan?  If so, how many?  I don't really care.  I'd just like a declaration before it "matters".

FWIW...  In the VR's actual rankings...  They score the overall standings by summing a score that each boat receives for their finishes, but the leg isn't added into the total until the leg is officially closed.  So...  if you click on the "race closed" banner below Clipper Leg 3 (before they remove it), it'll bring up the Leg 3 standings.  If you flip the switch from Leg to Race, you'll see it now shows the boats with the highest two-leg totals.  (Clipper Leg 1 didn't occur in VR).  Leg wins there are 3,200 points.  I think I'm 29-11 in the two legs, and that has me holding a total of 2,295 points, good for 13th overall so far.  You'll also see it says "10 best legs".  Since there's no Leg 1, we're doing 12...  which means only two throwouts.  So Clipper overall is going to be a real consistency marathon.  I realize Clipper isn't the point here.  I'm just mentioning it because it shows how the VOR overall will work once Leg 2 closes so that a proper "Overall So Far" standing can be seen from their approach.  Oddly, the VOR Leg 1 win was only worth 1,600 points for Sideshow.  I guess it doesn't matter as long as it's consistent leg-to-leg within a single event.  Anyway, in VOR, it will score only your best 6 legs.  So 5 throwouts.

My point is simply that if you want to save yourselves the trouble of calculating our rankings in a traditional manner, you can let VR do it their way and then post your Group A and Group B overall standings with their numbers instead (although you'd have to wait for them to close the legs).  I'd prefer it the way you're doing it if you want to continue to do the work, but this is an alternative if the current approach is a PITA.

It will be interesting if the Leg 2 winner gets 3,200 points...  With only 6 legs counting out of 11, it would imply that whichever legs are worth 3,200 are critical...  and whichever legs are worth 1,600 are almost like tiebreakers.  And it would also cause an eruption of anger and frustration on the VR forums, because it wasn't explained before people paid for Leg 1 options, etc, but that's a rodeo I've been to a few times before.

Good point.  I would suggest going with RRS A2 and A9.  That means one discard.  If there is a consensus which requests another option then I am happy to go along with that (as long as I understand it and it is relatively easy to implement on a basic spreadsheet). Other options include no discards or follow VR with 5 discards, plus many other options that I haven't even thought of.

I'm happy to continue to run the results on a group basis as shown in the post above, rather than use the VR results.

I'm very happy with RRS scoring, thanks.  :-)

BTW - I just realized there might only be 10 virtual legs.  Real Leg 5 is a 100-nm "transitional leg" where all boats get 1 point.  VR will probably (or at least should) skip that one.

The points received might be somehow proportional to the VSR level of the leg. Next leg is also VSR level 4.

That's what I'm thinking.  I think Leg 1 was Cat 5.  If that turns out to be true, then the consternation will start shortly after Leg 2 closes on December 5.

They are not even sailing up to Guanzhou irl AFIK just going up by engine. would be a really painful leg if they did lol

This works for me, and I'll also continue with this result method. It keeps me engaged. I tried the Trans Atlantic race, and I'm just mailing it in. without this interaction here it's hard to stay motivated.

Looking forward to the next leg.

I just read more on the VOR site...  looks like...

- Leg 4 finishes in Hong Kong in late January.

- In-Port race in Hong Kong January 27.

- Round-the-Island race January 28.

- Those two races "added together to give an overall position for the Hong Kong In Port Race".

- "Leg 5" "starts" on February 1, but they just go to Guanzhou and everyone who gets there gets 1 point for the leg.  It doesn't say they'll motor, but you're probably right.  I'm guessing they'll sail a bit if they happen to get a nice breeze from the right angle, to fly the sponsors' colors, make the city officials smile, etc, but it won't be a sailing race.

- They do an in-port race in Guanzhou, but it isn't clear what day.

- They go back to Hong Kong in similar fashion to how they got to Guanzhou, but without calling it a separate leg.  Not clear what day.

- There isn't an additional Hong Kong in-port race.  The next thing is the Leg 6 start on February 7.

Hi, Blitzquart finished the first leg in a 2000-2500 position. Don't remember and can't find the result.

For those who don't recall their Leg 1 finishing position and would like to know, I think I can give you a way.  But it will only work for you (not Tunnel Rat on your behalf), and it will only work until Leg 2 officially closes.  And it won't be possible to do this for Leg 2 or other future legs, so hopefully Tunnel Rat won't lose track at some point.

Go into the Leg 2 standings, and flip the switch from Leg to Race.  Does it show your current Overall Race position?  If so, then as long as Leg 2 hasn't closed yet, that position should be the same as your Leg 1 finish position.

I am also in the Transat, the forecast has been tricky to say the least. I see my sparring partners Rigo, Wethog and PrettyhateMachine out there getting some practice in before leg 3. Looks like the 8th to 12 group on the overall standings (above) all had the same idea to try and find some improvement. ;)

Thanks to Milli and EquusAsinusDomesticus for updating their Leg 1 finishes.  I have given Equus a 30th place finish which is the equal of the first of the boat after thse that I have confirmed place finishes for.  Any complaints, please refer to mkgsailor's post above.

On a side note I have tried using a fluorescent font and bold lettering for a certain "3" but it won't allow me to format it :P

Awesome work Tunnel Rat. Much appreciated! (I came about 400th in the first leg as I was in china for the last 3 days of the race and simply could not access VR thanks to their amazing firewall

As Per the HK Stopover. Watch out for the Round the Island Race. If we have a north east monsoon here (which is likely) the first 2 hours (ish will be absolutely awesome once they have left the harbour as they will be smoking downwind in 2-3 meter waves (My 29er training ground :) ) Will be an excellent bit of viewing for you all!!

Look at Your Moms post #836 in this thread and give me an exact number and I’ll include your result.

Thanks and cheers
