VOR '17-'18 - THE GAME

Recommended Posts

Based on the results from Leg 1 which were given in Post #371 on 6 Nov, here are the overall results, assuming that the last four sailors finish in their current positions. If we do not have your results for leg 1, or you have retired from the group, then you have been given 54 which is all boats entered +1.

I'm looking forward to Dec 10th.

Feel free to take a look and let me know if you see any errors. I'll likely tell you to fuck off and do it yourself. :)

I say pretty much the same thing at the skippers' meeting every time I take PRO duty.  I enjoy doing it, but it seems that the folks who bitch about how the PRO handles things (unless the PRO is terribly incompetent or it's a major regatta) are the same people that never volunteer to do the job.  Thanks to both of you guys (and whoever else has been doing it) for running the numbers.

Probably best to decide before we go too much further:  Any throwouts in this scoring plan?  If so, how many?  I don't really care.  I'd just like a declaration before it "matters".

FWIW...  In the VR's actual rankings...  They score the overall standings by summing a score that each boat receives for their finishes, but the leg isn't added into the total until the leg is officially closed.  So...  if you click on the "race closed" banner below Clipper Leg 3 (before they remove it), it'll bring up the Leg 3 standings.  If you flip the switch from Leg to Race, you'll see it now shows the boats with the highest two-leg totals.  (Clipper Leg 1 didn't occur in VR).  Leg wins there are 3,200 points.  I think I'm 29-11 in the two legs, and that has me holding a total of 2,295 points, good for 13th overall so far.  You'll also see it says "10 best legs".  Since there's no Leg 1, we're doing 12...  which means only two throwouts.  So Clipper overall is going to be a real consistency marathon.  I realize Clipper isn't the point here.  I'm just mentioning it because it shows how the VOR overall will work once Leg 2 closes so that a proper "Overall So Far" standing can be seen from their approach.  Oddly, the VOR Leg 1 win was only worth 1,600 points for Sideshow.  I guess it doesn't matter as long as it's consistent leg-to-leg within a single event.  Anyway, in VOR, it will score only your best 6 legs.  So 5 throwouts.

My point is simply that if you want to save yourselves the trouble of calculating our rankings in a traditional manner, you can let VR do it their way and then post your Group A and Group B overall standings with their numbers instead (although you'd have to wait for them to close the legs).  I'd prefer it the way you're doing it if you want to continue to do the work, but this is an alternative if the current approach is a PITA.

It will be interesting if the Leg 2 winner gets 3,200 points...  With only 6 legs counting out of 11, it would imply that whichever legs are worth 3,200 are critical...  and whichever legs are worth 1,600 are almost like tiebreakers.  And it would also cause an eruption of anger and frustration on the VR forums, because it wasn't explained before people paid for Leg 1 options, etc, but that's a rodeo I've been to a few times before.

Good point.  I would suggest going with RRS A2 and A9.  That means one discard.  If there is a consensus which requests another option then I am happy to go along with that (as long as I understand it and it is relatively easy to implement on a basic spreadsheet). Other options include no discards or follow VR with 5 discards, plus many other options that I haven't even thought of.

I'm happy to continue to run the results on a group basis as shown in the post above, rather than use the VR results.

I'm very happy with RRS scoring, thanks.  :-)

BTW - I just realized there might only be 10 virtual legs.  Real Leg 5 is a 100-nm "transitional leg" where all boats get 1 point.  VR will probably (or at least should) skip that one.

I'd say drop all those bitches with a 54 on the next leg..but I am being an asshole. :-) - at least the ones on leg 2.

Oddly, the VOR Leg 1 win was only worth 1,600 points for Sideshow.

The points received might be somehow proportional to the VSR level of the leg. Next leg is also VSR level 4.

That's what I'm thinking.  I think Leg 1 was Cat 5.  If that turns out to be true, then the consternation will start shortly after Leg 2 closes on December 5.

They are not even sailing up to Guanzhou irl AFIK just going up by engine. would be a really painful leg if they did lol

This works for me, and I'll also continue with this result method. It keeps me engaged. I tried the Trans Atlantic race, and I'm just mailing it in. without this interaction here it's hard to stay motivated.

Looking forward to the next leg.

I just read more on the VOR site...  looks like...

- Leg 4 finishes in Hong Kong in late January.

- In-Port race in Hong Kong January 27.

- Round-the-Island race January 28.

- Those two races "added together to give an overall position for the Hong Kong In Port Race".

- "Leg 5" "starts" on February 1, but they just go to Guanzhou and everyone who gets there gets 1 point for the leg.  It doesn't say they'll motor, but you're probably right.  I'm guessing they'll sail a bit if they happen to get a nice breeze from the right angle, to fly the sponsors' colors, make the city officials smile, etc, but it won't be a sailing race.

- They do an in-port race in Guanzhou, but it isn't clear what day.

- They go back to Hong Kong in similar fashion to how they got to Guanzhou, but without calling it a separate leg.  Not clear what day.

- There isn't an additional Hong Kong in-port race.  The next thing is the Leg 6 start on February 7.

Hi, Blitzquart finished the first leg in a 2000-2500 position. Don't remember and can't find the result.

For those who don't recall their Leg 1 finishing position and would like to know, I think I can give you a way.  But it will only work for you (not Tunnel Rat on your behalf), and it will only work until Leg 2 officially closes.  And it won't be possible to do this for Leg 2 or other future legs, so hopefully Tunnel Rat won't lose track at some point.

Go into the Leg 2 standings, and flip the switch from Leg to Race.  Does it show your current Overall Race position?  If so, then as long as Leg 2 hasn't closed yet, that position should be the same as your Leg 1 finish position.

I am also in the Transat, the forecast has been tricky to say the least. I see my sparring partners Rigo, Wethog and PrettyhateMachine out there getting some practice in before leg 3. Looks like the 8th to 12 group on the overall standings (above) all had the same idea to try and find some improvement. ;)

Thanks to Milli and EquusAsinusDomesticus for updating their Leg 1 finishes.  I have given Equus a 30th place finish which is the equal of the first of the boat after thse that I have confirmed place finishes for.  Any complaints, please refer to mkgsailor's post above.

On a side note I have tried using a fluorescent font and bold lettering for a certain "3" but it won't allow me to format it :P

Awesome work Tunnel Rat. Much appreciated! (I came about 400th in the first leg as I was in china for the last 3 days of the race and simply could not access VR thanks to their amazing firewall

As Per the HK Stopover. Watch out for the Round the Island Race. If we have a north east monsoon here (which is likely) the first 2 hours (ish will be absolutely awesome once they have left the harbour as they will be smoking downwind in 2-3 meter waves (My 29er training ground :) ) Will be an excellent bit of viewing for you all!!

I'm also out there only slightly North of all you guys ;) Fun to watch the Rhumbline huggers :D

Looks like north is starting to pay but still lots of tricky stuff to come.

I thought I was largely racing Han Solo where I was but logged in this morning and a green boat that must have been Stealth since right at the start was right on my hip then disappeared again.

Thanks to HKG1203 and Shorthanded. I've updated the overall.  In case anyone is looking closely, several people have the same scores for Leg 1, this is because I have times of finish for some people, placing for others and both for a few and then there are some people that I have a distance to finish when I signed up for leg 2.  So I am taking flying guesses at where the boats that are providing information now, but I don't feel it is right to change the placings of boats that were signed up from the beginning.

There has been no outpourings of grief and outrage at the suggestion to use RRS scoring so that is what I will go with.

Strategy time; With less than 6 days before the next start, What are the setup recommendations? What should be bought and what should be skipped over? What is the wind range for the "heavy sails"?

They're offering a special with the Full Pack for VOR Leg 3, where you get unlimited cards if you buy the full pack.  (But...  you won't be able to sell any cards at the end...  so the impact is that you're paying a fixed fee to do the race all-out, rather than paying in credits and then earning credits back).  It's a good deal if you like to schedule a lot of maneuvers and you're tired of trying to conserve cards.  But it probably costs more than the net cost of posting a strong finish without using a lot of cards.

Anyway...  I've purchased the full pack, making that strategy question moot.  For those not purchasing the pack:

- C0 is used in TWA ranges around 65-120 in lower windspeeds, and further aft above about 20 kts windspeed.

- Foils kick in at about 12 kts windspeed when the wind is aft of about 70 TWA.

- Jib and Gennaker switch from Light to Heavy around 18.8 kts windspeed.

- The impact of polish and winches is small.  It matters if you're working hard to be near the front, but if you're just having some fun, then your decisions about how much attention to put into it will matter more than polish or winches.

This leg will be mostly downwind heavy stuff...  So the idea of "maybe I just need foils and heavy sails" is somewhat viable...  But the C0 goes pretty far aft once the wind is over 20 (like TWA 130), so you'd be pretty frustrated pretty often without it.  So I think the minimum to really enjoy the leg competitively would be foils, heavy sails, and C0.  (I'm not certain which angles the C0 is dramatically better than the alternatives in...  I'm guessing something like 80-110 in lower windspeeds, and 90-125 in higher windspeeds).

The trouble is the fact that the changeover from light to heavy is at 18.8.  It's not like it's at 8.8.  It's safe to assume you will have time when you'd want light sails, probably particularly around the start and finish.  But you could probably get by with the normal Jib and Spinnaker when it's too light for Heavy Sails.

Anyway...  I think everything in the inventory will be used in this leg.  It's a matter of whether or not you're willing to be slow at times to save a bit.

@Tunnel Rat: What does the yellow highlight in the overall standings indicate?

Marty, it is supposed to show No of boats entered +1. But when I sorted the data, strange things happened with the highlighting which I did not notice until after I had posted. It should be correct next time.

No problem, i was just wondering what the yellow meant on my rank for my first leg. No worries.

So I’ve not got enough credit for foils for this leg- I wonder how much I’ll be punished for it... Now I’ve spent my credit- I can’t wind it back and chose the buy all option. Annoying !

Leg 2 is finally closed, so the overall ranking has been updated now to include 2 legs.

Which gets us to the latest VR debacle.  If you check the overall race rankings, you'll see that RQ-NAOS has 4,849 points.  Sideshow won Leg 1 and got only 1,600 points in the overall rankings for that.  So it's impossible for the two legs to have been scored the same.

Which wouldn't be a problem if they published the scoring pre-race and said every leg will count.  If you're accumulating points and the bigger legs are worth more points than the shorter legs, that can make sense.  But since they're only scoring 6 of 11, this is a major problem.  It means the short legs are going to be throwouts unless you do exceptionally well, and the big legs are going to count even if you do poorly, unless you do exceptionally poorly.

The biggest problem of course is that they haven't published anything to say how the scoring will actually work.

I did this last time around. I e-mailed the game after I bought the full pack and they credited me for the credits I used before I decided to buy the full pack. Worth a shot.

Right now - it's 4 hours difference between foils and non-foils, so I'll likely still be in touch with the leaders without them.

Think I'll save my SG$28.00

Ridiculous pricing for this game.  Makes me so angry that Philippe is so short sighted on this - he would have SO many more paying customers if he was realistic in his charging model.  As principal provider of racing game - VR should have more respect for the race and the players and stop being so greedy and lazy with game development.

FWIW...  In the VR's actual rankings...  They score the overall standings by summing a score that each boat receives for their finishes,

I had not been paying much attention to this, but I had some time and found the following info.  I've also added in the overall placing used in the tables above.  Some very different placings, I rather like the VOR methodology now, even though I don't understand it.

If you are given a 54 and you care, I'll try and work out your leg 1 finish if you let me know your time and finish position.

I'm looking forward to Dec 10th.

Sorry guys, I'm totally lost when it comes to the scoring thing!  Have never been able to figure out what the VSR is doing or how they determine scores.  But since there is now no prize money or trips to worry about, I'm just happy to have the SA'ers to sail with!  Thanks so much to the scorekeepers!!  You've done a great job and look forward to the next leg.
