It would be somewhat ironical if we bunged them all on Christmas Island.

Mr Dutton met with United States Attorney-General William Barr and US President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka while in Washington DC last week.

I am truly amazed at the number of people on social media celebrating Dutton getting the virus. I think he is a complete tool as well but wishing someone harm because you disagree with their politics is not what we as a nation represent. One of the students my son shared a house with in Milan has the virus and is hospital fighting for his life. He is a super fit 26 year old who has never smoked. This shit is real people- time for us all to be nice. Trump is different. His demise, like hitlers, will make the world a safer place.

I think it's quite possible that there are some people out there, that having been banged up in a concentration detention camp and denied some basic human rights while guilty of no crime other than not being Australian might draw a few parallels between  Abbott, Morrison, Dutton and Nazis.

I didn't wish him harm, just 14 days in one of his own "Hotels"

LB would be most suitable as Press Secretary...although we don't really have the equivalent of that here...so maybe Foreign Minister due to his recent travel experience

Bent could be Leader of the Opposition. FKT - Defence & Industry Minister, Dreads - Health Minister, Meli - Social Security Minister, Mid - Education & Employment, Random - Deputy Opposition Leader

I call for other nominations from the Aussie PA contributors?

Neither, they are both useless. If forced to chose would probably go for Trump. Jacinda seems to have developed a taste for President Xi's erection, Trump prefers to give him a kick in the nuts.

Still, at least she will be out of the way this weekend. Busy beating herself up and accepting all the blame on behalf of a penitent NZ for the actions of a dickhead Aussie. Hairshirts are the clothing requirement for the weekend.

It's a double whammy... because Trump basically has abdicated the US President's international position, NZ had no good cards to play. And the US is getting fucked harder than ever by China, Trump is just making big stupid defiant mouth noise.

Is that preferable to playing the cards your dealt, for the best possible outcome? Maybe NZ should just declare war on China?

NZ basically said a big 'fuck you' to the USA decades ago in a feel-good move.

Actions have consequences, sometimes decades later.

Of course in the current regime it'd make no difference as Trump has no concept of honour, loyalty or keeping agreements.

You're talking about Fay's AmCup "big boat" challenge?

Have to admit I'm actually not up to date on Sino-Kiwi relations but they're a lot closer than we are... got to think we have a lot of common interest though.

Trump has spent his entire life fucking over everybody he could, and insulting everybody he couldn't. Not worth considering as an ally or a partner

No, decades ago NZ told the USA that there'd be no more port calls by the USN unless they declared the ships nuclear weapons free.

The US Govt predictably said fuck off, we don't say. And downgraded military cooperation with NZ.

Actions have consequences.

You know, I can see where that might raise a few hackles but I don't blame NZ at all. If I was running a country, I'd like to know if another country was bringing in nukes.

Japan made similar declarations but have never enforced it, AFAIK.

Ironically, NZ is a bit far off the track of Russian subs and so less likely to be visited by USN ships with nukes aboard. Most common deployment of nuclear warheads is on ballistic missile subs and anti-sub platforms (which BTW includes carriers).

The US has a lot of economic leverage. Trump -could- have acted like he had some sense, and actually played the game. Instead he blusters, trusts his instincts, brays about how he's winning... and apparently you believe him. The US is considerably worse off now, with respect to China trade, than we were 3 years ago.

"At least he gave it a shot" is a poor excuse. Give Trump a participation trophy! He showed up to play, but he pissed away any chance to accomplish good because he can't be bothered to learn the first thing about what he's doing, and he falls for the most transparent flattering blather. Lazy dishonest braggart, go team!!

Against the US we did play, and still enforce, the no nuke policy.

Against China all our parties have accepted hundreds of thousands in dodgy donations direct from the PRC. We have an 'ex' PRC spy teacher as a list MP, means he cannot be voted out. Imagine the outrage if it was an 'ex' CIA teacher. The other party has a list MP who has publicly announced he is in Parliament to promote the PRC and its aims.

Yanks moan about Russia interfering in elections, our leaders have invited China to sit at the high table. Fuck me, the PRC supporting MP was put in charge of a committee by Jacinda to look into foreign government interference. No surprise he found there was none.

So our leader makes Trump look like he could be a better deal, how bad is that.

Other than Trump's say-so, what evidence do you have that "no-one was prepared t push back in the least"?

There was a growing trade group allied against China, and increasing pressure that they didn't like and resisted. Ivanka wanted them to make cheap purses for her fashion business, wow that's a victory. Trump threw away the US leverage, fucked over US farmers, and China is -still- stealing whatever they want.

A trade group was increasing pressure on China, wow that was working well.

As for your last part, you get blind if anyone says anything that could be non-derogatory about Trump. Our leader is making Trump look good, both over China and the corona virus. This is not a good thing. It doesn't mean I think Trump is good, just that I think ours is proving much worse.

No, I'm just pointing out that you take Trump's lies at face value, and try to push onto others that they are stupid for not liking how much Trump has been winning!! Bigly!!!

Actually the pressure on China was producing results. More than Trump's bullshit, which has basically let them go back to doing whatever they want without even bothering to promise changes. But Ivanka got a sweet deal out of it, maybe she'll share with you

Whatever happened to concern over China's currency manipulation? Oh wait, what? Forgot about that, have we? Stupid-ass Trumpalo

Jacinda Ardern reveals 'unprecedented' travel restrictions to combat coronavirus, all travellers to New Zealand to self-isolate

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced new restrictions requiring travellers to be quarantined for 14 days upon entry into the country in an attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The restrictions apply to all countries except for Pacific nations, and will come into effect at midnight on Sunday (10.00pm AEDT). It also includes any New Zealand citizens or residents returning to the country.

New Zealand has six confirmed cases and no recorded deaths.

Ms Ardern said these were "far-reaching and unprecedented" measures to tackle a global pandemic.

"Alongside Israel and a small number of Pacific islands who have effectively closed their borders, this decision will mean New Zealand will have the widest ranging and toughest border restrictions of any country in the world," Ms Ardern said.

"We are also encouraging New Zealanders to avoid all non-essential travel overseas. This helps reduce the risk of a New Zealander bringing COVID-19 back with them."

Ms Ardern also announced a ban on cruise ships coming to New Zealand.

"As of midnight tonight, we're issuing to all cruise ships not to come to New Zealand until at least June 30, that is for incoming cruise ships, at which time the directive will be reviewed," she said.

The news will have implications for a number of Australian sporting leagues and events, and already the remaining two games of Australia's three-match ODI series with New Zealand have been called off, as well as Australia's upcoming tour of the country.

Christchurch memorial called off

Meanwhile, Christchurch families will be forced to mourn the 51 people killed in last year's mosque shooting in isolation after a national memorial service was cancelled due to coronavirus fears.

In a statement, Ms Ardern said while New Zealand had no cases of human-to-human transmission of COVID-19, the event was called off as a precaution.

"This a pragmatic decision," she said.

"We're very saddened to cancel, but in remembering such a terrible tragedy, we shouldn't create the risk of further harm being done."

New Zealand Government Minister Megan Woods said medical authorities raised concerns about the public nature of the memorial service, scheduled to be held an arena in Christchurch's outskirts.

Travellers from across and outside the country were expected to gather and because it was non-ticketed, traceability of attendees became a concern.

The cancellation of the memorial service was received with mixed feelings.

It is not typical in Islamic culture to hold memorial or anniversary days — prayers for the dead are made every day for Muslims.

Telling all tourist to self isolate  won't work, how can they do that. Why dont they just close the borders.

Huh? they just did.

Oh you mean us in Oz? We are super tough.

Nah, I suspect that would mean closing out the USA and we can't do that can we?

Slight drift.  Yesterday I switched on the TV and there was Shorten railing on about Scomo's virus measures.  Where was Albo.  Is this the start of the come back trail for Shorten?

And I thought people that worked in Libraries had to know how to read.  Borders not closed just all travelers have to self isolate (as if they will).

Comes down to pretty much the same thing in practice. Limits travel to essential business.

WHO has advised not to actually lock up borders.

Dam.

They've postponed this 6 weeks.

Image result for ubuntu africa a brighter day armadale

I was hosting 4 of these lovely kids and looking forward to it.

Now it gets more real.

The concerts they do raise money to pay for schools in Uganda and their University fees.

Shame.

Good on you for the hosting offer, though it will more likely be 6 months than 6 weeks before things get back to normal.

I recommend you charge them rent: each kid to take 30 minutes to tell you about their life, their home, their plans.

Yeah, I think the organisers are too optimistic in their disappointment but a few of the other hosting choirs have pulled out so it's become un financial  for them.

The kids have been rehearsing for months

I've suggested our choir does some gigs to fund raise to replace some of their loss. But I don't know how unless we cut another DVD with proceeds going to them.

That would be a little sad given the circs :)

Why have they stopped it? It is only events that pull a crowd of over 500 that are banned.

Not sure, organisers  seem to be saying the CV thing is really drastically effecting bookings across the country and hoping things will settle down (They start Uni in August so it will be pretty tight to get enough workshops and concerts booked if they delay until end of may) I think most of their performances book over 500.

And they do more than concerts, they do dance workshops at schools, and public performances  too. They've been coming every two years for a while and usually sell like hot cakes.

Now why would LB be being sarcastic? He's not quite such an arsehole as you.

Actually most gigs are under 500, but at $25 a ticket X 20 concerts plus the workshops it pays for a years University fees for all 14 of them.

I thought you conservatives were all about making people sing for their supper?

The difference between you and I is that I don't automatically assume someone is being meeen.

Good initiative

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-15/victorian-government-funds-elective-surgery-blitz-ahead-of-peak/12057420

The Victorian Government has announced an elective surgery blitz ahead of the peak of the coronavirus pandemic which is expected in "only a few weeks", the state's Health Minister says.

Key points:

  • The Government is spending $60 million on the elective surgery funding blitz and $30 million to open 140 new hospital beds at Casey Hospital
  • More than 7,000 elective surgery patients are expected to be treated
  • The aim is to flatten the curve of the pandemic so hospitals are not overrun

The Andrews Government announced a $100 million package of initiatives to help the state flatten the peak of the health crisis so that hospitals were not overrun.

As part of the package, the Government is giving both public and private hospitals more than $60 million to undertake elective surgery for more than 7,000 "vulnerable" patients.

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said the idea was to do the surgeries now to free up capacity in the hospital system before the number of people with COVID-19 grew.

Looks like we're starting to close our borders. PM just announced that all foreign arrivals must self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival and all cruise ships that originated from a foreign port will not be allowed to dock for a period of at least 30 days.

Probably should have done this a week ago. The majority of our cases in Vic are out of the USA.

Point of interest. what do these cruise ships do, anchor offshore and rely on the nearest port country to feed and water them or aimlessly roam the high seas like some latterday plague ship?

Not sure as they will need to stock up on food and other supplies. Maybe they'll be allowed to dock for replenishment of supplies but no-one allowed off. A moving beast atm I'd suggest. No detail announced that i could find when i searched for it 20 mins ago. We got the Seven Seas Mariner due in tomorrow. Not sure where it originated.

Well I have to give some cred to the way ScoMo's handling this. I am surprised. Perhaps he's found his element as PM at last. out of the skirts of Abbott and Dutton ect.

2 cruise ships in Hobart port yesterday when I drove up. Saw them as I was coming down the Southern Outlet and thought to myself - WTF????

Yes we have to allow them to refuel and load supplies if necessary. We don't have to allow pax ashore though.

Going to be interesting if the Bass Strait ferry stops carrying pax for a while. Might stop my annual winter migration to Sydney but if things are at that point, shrug, better do it than not. I've only about 20 years of backlogged projects right here. Might need more firewood though.

The doctors are demanding state and federal governments implement strict lockdown and social distancing, and ramp up health resources to cope with a surge in critically ill patients.

The demands are outlined in an open letter currently circulating among doctors.

Key points:

  • The pleas are made in an open-letter circulating online among doctors
  • The letter has almost 4,000 signatories, the author says
