      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

      Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

would be interested to know if the sections could be cut and spreaders fitted to work with other boats - Platu 25 would love a carbon mast head rig for additional fun.

Betting no rig engineer would risk saying yes - just wondering.

Masthead on a Platu would be ridiculous!  Especially downwind. It's hard enough to keep one on its feet as is, what with the narrowest waterline beam ever, minuscule rudder and cast iron ballast.  I guess in SoCal it would mostly be okay, but anything above ~12 TWS is gonna be difficult.   Also main sail trim will be completely different.  Bending of the rig is crucial for depowering main.  Since you're likely the only one around there, do you have to keep to 400kg max crew weight as in class racing or can you just load up the rail with some big dudes?

 

In other words, you should probably try it.  Take video!   :D:D

Believe it or not, the Platu wouldn't be the 'oddest' boat I've had inquiries from on these rigs. Plenty of GJ (Garage Job) 32's, and BY (Back Yard) 29's - both multi and mono. Even one from a self-designed, home-built plywood schooner!

We’ve got an old Columbia at our club sporting a Mumm 30 rig.

FWIW I've seen the masts and they are in good shape. only some very minor scratches which "buffed out" by rubbing them with my finger

That is most definitely a Mumm 30 rig.  It does, however look a lot like a Mumm36 rig and it is a bit "spindley" for that water-dozer

It’s a 30 with a few modifications. It was a sample made by Omohundro when they were first getting started with the Mumm 30 class. The boat owner’s boss was the previous owner of Southern Spars/Omohundro, so he got it for free to tinker with. 

Yes, it looks spindly, but it’s held up for a few years so far.

Well that would turbo the light air performance of Lioness; to where a blade would be more area than her current 160%, and that would be an improvement in handling. 

 Downside is it would bump the center of effort up quite a bit, might need a keel shoe as in "Actea"'s mods. 

Centerboard rake should be able to trim the helm.

Yes, it looks spindly, but it’s held up for a few years so far. 

I meant to type most definitely NOT a Mumm 30 mast.  The rig in the pic has straight spreaders, runners and checks -> Mumm36

Those are the modifications. ;) 

It looks even funnier with a Mumm 30 main up in the air. 

Not a 36. I figured out what you meant, but it started life as a bare tube 30 rig.

Could off course be right - the sheer idiocy of taking a Mumm 30 stick, converting it to straight spreaders, running backs and checks is beyond laughable though

Thanks Bob! I wonder if the after-market value should be higher now that Hall is no more.. Not so many options for a new carbon stick in the US any more, and even if there were, I suppose there's something to say about sourcing one from the original manufacturer in the case of a one-design class?

its about the same $/ft but w/o the need for a repair.

the key thing is the transport; the stars need to align for that.

still trying to find the rigging specs. so far....nada.

This stick was bought by a client who subsequently bought another boat and he no longer needs the stick. He just wants to get rid of it. I think he paid $8,000.

Yes it seems the shipping quotes only have eyes for size, rather than value! 

I'll reach out again to the Hall guys to see if they can find anything on the rigging.

Sorry Koss - there were DOZENS of gooseneck fittings left at the Hall factory (I saw them) but they were bought up during the auction before I got in to purchase the leftover masts/rigging. I believe, but am not sure, that they were bought by Fast Forward Composites of Bristol, RI. You could call them and ask, or call the guys at Hall Spars Service LLC they might know where they went.

Sold the big 100 footer, and one of the Bene 10R rigs as well as most of the rod rigging and the aluminum boom. Here's the update on remaining stock below. Might be an option for another economical coast-coast transport in January if you're on the left coast.

x1 Beneteau 10R rig left. Super nice complete package with spreaders and all hardware installed, nice clear coat, etc.

x1 Farr 36 UNFINISHED tube. Beautiful carbon tube with primary patching reinforcements but nothing else - no cuts, drills, holes, hardware, clear coat, etc. Could make a nice blank palette for someone trying to outfit a different boat, or could be easily finished off to mate with an existing Farr 36

x1 Farr 36 COMPLETE mast (new). All hardware installed, nice clear coat, no spreaders, no boom

x1 Farr 36 used/broken mast. Compression break at the bottom of the section, cut off and cleaned up just below gooseneck. All hardware, decent clear coat.

x2 300lb spools of -6 nitronic rod rigging from Navtec 

x3 spools surplus Kevlar rigging. I have -32 & -10

-A dozen or so carbon mast-base instrument hangers of all shapes/sizes. Not clear coated.

If I remember correctly, the middle spreaders (these curved spreaders pictured above are a set of three) are about 65" or so. I have no other data on them, but they were designed for Bella Mente for their 'old rig', then they broke that before these ever got installed and redesigned the mast & spreaders (so I'm told) when they went to replace, so these got forgotten.

If the spreaders were designed for a 72 footer, then they would be way too big for my project.  I would guess they are wider than the depth of my mast.  It was worth inquiring about though.

Any other smaller section spreaders available in the 60" or so range?

Just the length and base and tip chords. Maybe the depth of the curve in the spreader itself. 

     Fast Forward is in stealth mode for a while longer I think.

Why is that? And what are they up to? They outbid me on a vast amount (by far the largest buyer, by volume) during the Hall Spars auction. Their lot took 3-4 full size trucks to move everything.

Deep pockets behind FF. I would have thought that they might take over the whole Hall facility but apparently not. Randy Smyths new concept for fully rotating wing spar is their goal on bigger cats. I think that they have a Paul Bieker 53' cat similar to the Gold Coast Yachts built FUJIN slated to use the new rig. They already have one on an old Formula 40 cat. Jim Brown has the scoop on those projects. Other that Jim's podcasts, very little has been said as Randy now has patent granted but is still playing cards close to chest. You should have followed those big trucks! 

    Talked with my client yesterday and mentioned your curved spreaders. Might be able to use a pair but they would be on a rotating mast so the curve really doesn't contribute as much as it would on a non-rotating rig. Send some dims and we might consider anyway.

I guess the Wright Bros plane looked pretty funky at first too. Randy has been working on this a long time and he seems to have put together a great team for the full scale proto. Still a lot of area that stays up at all times but it can rotate 360 around the base and hounds which sit on top of the mast. If they can tame that much area at dock or heave too it just might be worth it.

I know where they have been testing and sailing out of.   I can attest the wing can stay up tied to dock in very windy conditions, rotate freely and have no issues moored near other boats.   The foiling Ted boat is pretty cool too
