      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

VOR Leg 2 Lisbon to Cape Town

So this course for the Leg3 start on Sunday will be a messy business, just like last time if memory serves. They will start in the windshadow, slowly get out of it, then have a reaching blast down to the second mark, which in this imprecise map will be somewhere near the beach where we might be able to get near them, and a reach back into the windshadow before drifting down to mark 3 and heading off. Current forecast has a pretty rough first night for them, potentially boat breaking conditions, again much like last time I believe.

. There was a very good kiteboarder accompanying them the whole time, it was impressive how he managed to keep up with them, and he was throwing big tricks near them, so I assume he was a team member, because no lone kiter would go that far out into the bay. Any issue with your kite and you would be dead in the cold water with offshore wind and noone else around.

I'm trying to find maps of the in-port race for Friday and the start on Sunday

The kiteboarder is a Dutch friend of Liz and Jeremie (OBR) who lives locally,  World Champion I think, sorry can't remember his name, Chris maybe...but have seen some seriously cool footage from him from today. At one point he was struggling to keep up on his twin tip....not for long though.

In Port race info is on this page http://www.volvooceanrace.com/en/ports/cape-town.html

But standby, depending on wind....could be breezy at the weekend.

Okay, that makes a lot of sense! He is indeed one of the best in the world, having won innumerable competitions, most famously in kiterland, the King of the Air competition here last February. His previous KEVVLOG #34 shows just how crazy he can jump, filmed two weekends ago. My best jumps, being a mere mortal plus 62 years old, are around 10m, while he is pushing 30m. But he's also the nicest guy, willing to take time to talk. I've met him several times out here, and on Monday chatted with him on the beach a little around 6PM when all the pros came down for a jumping session at Bloubergstrand, where the KOTA will be held in the first two weeks of February. They put on quite a show in 35 knot winds. As usual he was on a 9m Naish Pivot (he rides for Naish), and I had just gotten blown off the water on my 7m Pivot!

Kevin does use a remarkably big kite for the conditions, but it is also technique, strength, and youth, plus of course, big balls. I literally could not hold down my 7m kite by 6PM on Monday, and he and most of the other hotshots were out on 9m kites. He flew a 10m kite when he won the KOTA last year with some huge jumps, but not just simple jumps, he put in spins and inversions while up there, amazing. Guys have died doing jumps like that, or trying to.

VIDEO REVIEW LEG 2: For each Boatfeed, we whittle the 200+ videos and 150 photos down to a few, and then do a final pass to get the 4 or 5 each that we highlight on the show.  Here's my first selection from Leg 2, with stars on the ones that I actually wanted to use.   Ended up using 5 of them.  Show was really solid and should premiere on Thursday night.

Googled, but can't find source. Yours? I'm obviously missing something.

Yep, plenty of water drenching sailors,  that's all anyone wants to see in this race.

Quick notes:

Sound is better. Musto pimping easy to take. Inmarsat. 90s per vid--challenge. Good! Mostly worked to keep the focus on the content. SHKS wipeout works as a warmup, TTOP hydration,  Squall section surprising--seemed more about the off watch scrambling, Dr Cloggs discussion fair enough, bit didactic but not insufferable considering the options possible. Drone wars, albatross chasing cool to anticipate. "We're fucked" (bit surprised. expected a comment about it being staged, since Pascal probably had better French ideas, but chose to ham it up for the English?). TTOP sending it good pick.Sander's pick of the tactical moment on VS11 excellent highlighting of the decisions. "Approachable" works.

Best part? No music in the vids :)

Bottom line: Thanks for the picks and packaging. Worth the time to watch.
