Melges IC-37 Chosen as new platform for Canada's Cup Match racing regattas

Recommended Posts

With design/build.   The CC  Deed held by RCYC references design / build and development.    It does not mention OD racing.    The problem is there is so little money around for throw away race boats.    Nobody wants to play anymore.   Such is life.    The good old days of  real wealth are basically gone never to return,   Trump or no Trump.    How to rekindle?    Joint ventures with designers and builders with go forward value ?   Wait for the current Millenials  to inherit  and have families that need facilities not just big dinghies.    Again this requires a modicum of wealth.    People liked the 8 meter spectacle and nobody gave a crap about the Farr 40 spectacle.     The NYYC  Invitational seemed to work because the boats had a future after the spectacle.   Maybe some of the designers and builders have an opinion ?

A truly idiotic statement - BITD of the big CC's the rich didn't have yachts the size of cruise ships. They didn't spend hundreds of $million$ on the AC. They didn't pay $50 million for a collector car.

The really rich have never been richer than they are now. Many, many people spend more on a mid level collector car than any CC boat & campaign would cost.

The interest just isn't there.

The cup will be sailed in 2020, 2022 and 2024 at the RCYC and is a match race between the USA and Canada.

AFAIK, RCYC doesn't own the CC.

you should all read Doug Hunter's book Against the Odds which discloses a lot about CC and RCYC.

Great book, and yes it does say a lot about the country club's pretensions and its vindictive attitude towards RHYC / Don Green.

They host every year, 2020, 2022 and 2024 regardless of who wins or loses.

Really?

When you decide to go with OD production boats, you're able to run the event more frequently and with much less hassle. The CC does not need to be the AC.

Amen to that.

I know there are Corinthian programs out there, but lets look at the reality. The programs that are willing to spend the money on this kind of event are generally not Corinthian. For the Toronto market it is one thing, because T.O. generally isn't very favorable to pros. Whereas many of the US markets rely very heavily on pros to help get them around the course and hopefully win a regatta or two.

That's true but so what? Trophy-buying is not something to be encouraged. There are tons of talented American amateur sailors; I'm sure that they will continue to be able to raise good teams for the CC without needing to employ hired guns.

To play with the big boys you had to buy long pants and go to the Custom Shop ( Bruckmann)  or  Wiggers Custom Yachts to get the one off  custom that would eclipse the ordinary  regattas. Yes this is elitism. For top of the line racing i like elitism. I love to see what can be created with  lots of money and ego and desire to achieve.

(1) I dislike elitism, in any form;

(2) No serious person thinks the CC is "top of the line racing".

It used to be - it was one of, if not THE premier match racing series outside the AC.

Match racing his own C&C 43's.

The elite do not need others to race against.
