VOR Leg 4 Melbourne to Honkers

Recommended Posts

Since cat 5 cyclone Winston hit me right on 2 years ago, I'll be the last one to want to jinx anyone with even a cat 1 cyclone.
But I am afraid that because of the complete ignorance of the VOR, and the posters here, for cyclones in the south pacific, that mother nature will throw the fleet a nice curveball.

Like this exceptional and pretty amazing one, cyclone Rewa in January 1994, see:   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone_Rewa

rewa-track-inset.jpg

Not to worry too much though, as there is only a relative small chance that anything will happen, but it is for real nevertheless. And the fleet will get at least several days warning, and with their high speeds they will be able to play hide and seek. But it would be fun to watch...

Where?

VOR site racing tab->race blog sometimes http://www.volvooceanrace.com/en/raceblog.html

app sometimes.

shrug. Eventually some clips show up on you tube. https://m.youtube.com/user/volvooceanracevideos/videos

it is all part of the  prolixic excitement where the  fans get the feeling of struggling to be there.

Some quotes from the Facefuck Fans:

David Talbot What are you playing at VOR? Post saying there will be a pre start live session now then the time comes and you delete it!

Heidi Schuman
Heidi Schuman I hope when you go live you catch us up on everything. How are the sailors that were hurt in the last leg doing? How are the boats that got damaged? How is everyone doing with all the crew changes? Do they feel rested and ready for this next leg? Also why don't they take fresh foods like apples, oranges that would last maybe a week or is it only those freeze dried meals? Looking forward to all your reports. Thank you

Nice interviews. Got to give it to the VOR crew... at one point during the interview with Charles Caudrelier... they briefly break away to show you what he's really thinking. Awesome!!!

Yes, Tienpont sounds okay and relaxed. They are indeed ready and will perhaps be the surprise of this leg.

Forgive my ignorance ..distracted by S2H. Did they find any mast damage on Akzo rig when they pulled it to reinstate the track?

S2H still?

Only showed the repair not the extent of damage.

So, there were some live interviews with skippers an hour or so ago. Now it's just replays of previous leg videos. Does someone know more about when/if we might get live "live" coverage?

So repair = grind out, new carbon laid up, then reinstate track

So there was no way that rig was going to HK with just a rig insitue shore team/crew repair as per SI's.

JFC those first gen 70's  were falling apart every 5 minutes. Makes the 65's look like absolute tanks in comparison.

That is true.

It is impressive how far the technology has come, especially with the canting keel systems / box.

Interesting to here he thinks they've closed the speed gap on Dongfeng.

Reasonable observation on your's (aka) and Tuke's (speed) part.

Mapf seem to have some steel - really hope that Dongf, Vestas et al can bring it back..

We've seen some media from Xabi and Blair but little from JV, RG and PA. Sophie's the babe (apols) and hard core with it. Sum bleddy team.

I was curious about Fiji Bitter's cyclone comments.  Soooo, looking ahead with the usual proviso that forecast's are only really reliable up to five maybe seven days, there could be a bitch coming to town for some fuckery around the 12th.  VOR boats will be long gone, but there is potential for some fugliness for the locals.

Rikke and him seem to have a great partnership. Their daughter must be about 20 now. I think they've been to basically every country he'd sailed to.

Those massive fenders are usually left at the dock. They're keeping them on until they clear the bridge.
