Toronto boat show 2018

Recommended Posts

My wife and I will be there on three days as we are doing presentations. Her talks are in Chinese - the boat show is going after the large, affluent Chinese market in the Toronto area.

Well.... i may be in town, but i wont be there. Besides,  with west marine gone there will be no one selling boat hooks.

Good luck with your presentation.

I used to go and enjoy the seminars but in recent years they charge for most of the interesting lectures, which in my mind should be provided as a incentive to pay the entrance fee.

I get as much out of a browse around the local chandlers as I do from going to the boat show now. So I doubt if I'll be going.

We have been in contact with a guy in China who has purchased a new Tayana 54 (55?) who wants us to run his boat for him while he learns to sail and while he learns English. He wants to sail around the world at some point. The first step is to take the boat fromTaiwan to Hong Kong where he has arranged a dock (import to China is really expensive so most Chinese-owned boats are registered in Malaysia or elsewhere. We have been waiting for more than a year for the tickets to go to Taiwan.

There's been zero sailing porn for last 5 or 6 years at least. But, if you're interested in the latest Bayliner, go for it...

Not everyone is a pooper like BasketCat and there are plenty of good reasons to go to the Boat Show:

PHRF-LO AGM - lots of folks, part of backbone of the local sailboat racing infastructure, meet at the Boat Show to review the years business. Is the meeting boring? Why, yes, it is. But it's yeoman work that helps keep racing alive on our Lake.

Bits and Bobs - always some reasonable deals to be had on whatever gear you need. While it's true there is little in the way of actual sailboats to look at, there's heaps of sailing gear of all descriptions.

Clubs - lots of folks move clubs over the winter for whatever reason. Many are at the show and it's a great way to scout 5 clubs in one day.

The Calendar - in Toronto the winter can be a big drag and it's LONG. There's something about the Boat Show in mid January that seems to signify the start of the end of the winter. Even though in reality it's just the start of the really cold weather. But it gets your head out of winter for a few hours.

I like the Boat Show.

My God you are full of hate Basketcase.   Do you sleep at night or just put pins in dolls ?   I thought you would like my new name as you gave it to me in prior hate filled screeds.    Do I now have to change my name to FuckWit  ?   I have to wait 30 days to do that sadly,  but I will happily,   just to calm you down  and reduce your reliance on your meds.     I wish you nothing but health and happiness in 2018 as you continue your life as an unemployed wastrel stalker.     Are you still parking outside my house?    My neighbours are watching for you.   They have a neighbourhood watch and would like to meet you for tea.

Geeze lads, the guy just ain't worth it...  I`m still waiting to visit my buddy Carson on the island one day and see if his dockmate`s around - that`d be a funny scenario!

So yeah, the show`s morphed into a shadow of what it once was but I`ve been going for 45 years and I`m not about to stop now. It is a great time to catch up with folks I`ve worked with and sailed against over the years, and where else can you cover half the boat`s wish list in one place?  Not that I`m necessarily buying on the show floor, but at least I can see it, touch it, and talk to someone sorta knowledgable before making an educated decision.

Cheers, looking forward to seeing many old friends!

Oddball: Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Going to the show regardless.

I'm sure it will better the Detroit and Cleveland shows and the beer tastes better too.

Back to the show, I will be presenting on Wednesday at 3 pm and Sunday (the 21st) at 330. Topic is making the transition from being a lake sailor to an ocean cruiser. My wife is presenting three times with lots of pretty pics of our circumnavigation. It would help if you knew Mandarin for her talks.

It is bleak. There are six, count 'em six monos all squished into less than half of the final eastern aisle. Acres of pontoon boats, and runabouts. An uptick in the number of people selling marina/condo dreams in Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay and related lifestyle crap. Garhauer pinned in the back adjacent to the food court and looking forlorn. Fack me. I felt like an alien.

"Dave's not here, man."

Very few sailboats but its been a very long time since that was the draw of the TO show.  Saw lots of friends exhibiting and in the aisles both days, attended a meeting Saturday, and got some "us" time since my wife was down working our club booth on Sunday.  Talked to some industry and distributor reps about new Harken and Gill kit, refrig, and an interested bit of snorkelling gear we might try out in Antigua next month (https://mintyssurfshop.ca/products/neopine-180-degree-full-face-snorkel-mask-with-gopro-attachment).

It's been nearly 20 years since I attended a PHRF-LO AGM - well-intended volunteers trying to do the right thing, proposals to further complicate and add more layers of semi-scientific logic to an observational tool (argh), handicappers professing why their club's situation's unique and shouldn't have to operate by the same rules, and the odd self-promotion by volunteers and professionals alike.  Yup, just like the old days!

Saw a new record for a pontoon boat price - there's one at the north end of the Mariners Marketplace listed at $122,9k!

Garhauer's standard display of attractively-displayed overweight and somewhat reasonably priced tractor hardware was at or near where it's been for several years, and about where they deserve to be based on the effort they make to present and sell themselves as a flea market booth.   Yeah, I know, there's lots of good customer service stories with Garhauer, but when the owner can't hear or understand questions and won't even talk about his stuff I just don't get it...

Cheers!

Completely agree. They have the weirdest display at the whole show: lots of hardware on the tables, but zero signage except for a crappy little 8.5" x 11" piece of computer paper pinned to the surrounding curtain with "Grahauer" written on it in smallish print. It's like they don't want to sell anything.

My wife's Chinese presentation today only had 10 people at it but they were incredibly enthusiastic with questions going on in the hall for at least half an hour after the presentation was over. The other interesting thing was the age range with only one couple in their early 50s and everyone else from mid 20s to mid 30s. I had about 30 people at my presentation on Wednesday and only two couples were less than 50 or so. Maybe the solution to the aging sailing demographic is shift away from old fart white guys like me, although one woman wanted a photo with me, probably because I am the husband of the famous circumnavigator. Seriously several mentioned (to my wife in Chinese) in different ways that it was great to have a Chinese sailing role model.

Anyway one presentation for each of us tomorrow (mine is 130, not 330) and then a night at a hotel near the airport. By dinner time on Monday we will be back on the boat in Grenada.

No Water Rats booth.

Here's a short and probably incomplete list of sailing organizations / businesses that I remember having exhibited at the show over the past five years but have been absent during the past two or three: Canadian Albacore Association; Canadian Wayfarer Association; C&L Boatworks; Georgian Bay Sailing Coach; Harbourfront Centre Sailing & Powerboating. The cost of a booth must simply not be worth it to them.
