J70 keel mod - legal?

Recommended Posts

Was told today the J70 I’m looking at buying “...needs the keel mod...” - proported to be changing ,“... the delrins mating up w the chocks on top of the keel where it rests when down. This will Lower the keel...”  better RM? Love it, and doesn't seem legal. But is everyone doing it?

searched for topic but didn’t find anything...

and its snowing outside so I need some boat talk...

Some items worth noting - "THESE RULES ARE CLOSED CLASS RULES WHERE IF IT DOES NOT SPECIFICALLY SAY THAT YOU “MAY” THEN YOU “SHALL NOT.”

C.8.1 (d) - Modification of the keel wedges is prohibited.

I would love to know who told you to modify the keel.  If the boat is one of the very early hull numbers there is difficulty if finding replacement wedges if they were to be damaged, but the rules are fairly clear that modifying them is illegal.

I don't have a 70, but would think that stuff like keel depth would be carefully measured, and boats with the modded delrins subsequently DSQ'd.  Is the J70 class that loosely regulated that owners are getting away with stuff like that?
