Things To Do In London

Recommended Posts

I am going to have a couple of days of free time on an upcoming business trip and looking for things to do in London outside of the usual suspects such as:

  • British Museum
  • Tower of London
  • The Palace
  • Westminster
  • Pickadilly
  • Portabello Markets
  • Hyde Park,
  • National Gallery
  • Tower Bridge
  • Big Ben
  • Churchill War Room
  • Abby Road

Recommendations?  I'll be "cribbing" at Melia White House on Albany Street, Regents Park..

A pint (or two) of Fuller's London Pride.  Preferably at a Fuller's pub on the river.  Mmmmm.....

Maritime museum. And stand astride the zero meridian line in the adjacent observatory. 1 foot in the east - the other foot in the west - (longitudes). A must get pic.

Get there on a ferry ride down the Thames to Greenwich.

When I went from London to Greenwich the ferry was a hoovercraft. Though that was 44 years ago.  The Maritime museum is a must see for sure.  I don't know if the Cutty Sark is still near there, but worth a visit.

Starting in a couple of weeks, the British Library (between Euston and St. Pancras stations) will be hosting an exhibit on Captain Cook's voyages to the Pacific, with logbooks and drawings and whatnot.  On top of that, the permanent exhibit "Treasures of the British Library" is one of the underrated gems of London - the Magna Carta, Shakespeare's will, lots of original Beatles stuff, etc.  It's very close to Regent's Park.

And if you have never been to Sir John Soane's Museum, it's an absolute must.  Quite possibly the best pocket-sized museum / cabinet of curiosities in the world.  Even better when they are open late with candlelight (the next night is Fri Apr 27th, with a Hogarthian gin theme ).  Afterward, stop by  the Courtauld Galleries - another small gem.

I second the Imperial War Museum as a good stop.  Also the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

If the weather is nice, take the Tube to Richmond and walk over to Twickenham.  Walk down to Marble Hill House, take a tour, then along the river to the White Swan pub.  Have a pint and enjoy.  Then just wander around Twickenham, maybe taking the ferry back across to Ham House.  Pretty much the perfect afternoon.

And yes, there's more in London than one can cover in a lifetime...

I used to drink there when I lived in Richmond. Montague Rd. 1972. (mind you, there are probably a dozen pubs named White Swan on the Thames.)

There is/was a pub called Prospect of Whitby (I think). Full of curios that sailors would bring back from their voyages from a couple of centuries ago. Worth a look - - -

Make a day trip ...   get out of town  ...  see the countryside ....   and find your way to the water....

Catch train to Southampton, and take the ferry connection to Isle of Wight (you can do it all on the same ticket) ...     and visit Cowes ..

Hang around the town,  see the center of English yachting, check out the boats and marine businesses ...visit a nautical pub ..   see the Royal Ocean Racing Club ...    If you still have time ...  explore the island a bit before catching the ferry and train back to London !

As noted above, like any big and old city, far too much to cover in our e trip without spending half your visit getting places.

0100899_coverimage_165242_LondonStrangeT

Grab yourself a copy of this book, it's a collection of short pieces regarding less touristy and thought provoking parts of London, in a few minutes you can walk from the first street in London to have pedestrian sidewalks and kerb stones to the smallest Police Station in London.

Go to Gordon's Wine Bar on Villiers St which is only 10 minutes from the two spots above for great food and an unreal subterranean bar with Dickensian DNA. Then cross Hungerford Bridge to the South Bank, walk past The National Theatre, The Clink Jail, The Golden Hind replica, Borough Market, The Globe Theatre, The National Theatre, The Oxo Building, The Tate Modern all the way to Tower Bridge, you can cross to the Tower, either catch the tube back up to your start point near Trafalgar Square, or grab the Water Taxi to Embankment Pier. Covent Garden is just above all that across The Strand. That's a whole day right there, as long as you don't mind a walk.

Best to link stuff than dive all over the map. Yes, Museums are cool, but you're isolated from the City itself somewhat. Just my 2 cents.

Second on getting out of the city and visiting some of the other areas, Stratford upon Avon, Cambridge, Peterborough,  Warwick Castle.  In London, Covent Garden marketplace, Eye of London, National Portrait Gallery, and just meandering thru the neighborhoods checking out local pubs is quite fun too.

You know while having a very slight basis in reality, that statement is beyond ludicrous.  In addition, whatever laws that the current ultra right wing, ultra religious Polish Government is passing do not necessarily reflect any current or historic reality.

If you're near Sloane Square, the Victoria and Albert Museum is good.

Tube is handy ("Mind the Gap!), but the regular double-decker city buses give you a tourist ride on the cheap.  St Paul's Cathedral is impressive, in the middle of everything, and easy to spot with that huge dome.

IIRC there is a lovely little café right on the river which was very nice, eat outside, gaze at the swans and all that.

Tower of London is interesting place. View The Crown Jewels. Think there is a schedule for that, when they bring them up from the vault for public display. Impressing stuff.

For inspiration:

From your first post - the usual suspects are there for a reason.  You really need to see the Tower and Westminster if you haven't been there.

Nobody has listed St. Paul's yet.

He changes his I.D. more often than his underwear.

And he still an ignorant prick - as well as piss poor investment advisor.

Get the hell out of London. Go to some place where they serve real ale.

Going to London is like going to NYC. It's loud, it's expensive, it's filthy, and it's not particularly attractive.

BTW.... Take extra care in crossing any streets.... They drive on the wrong side of the road.

Always look both ways - twice - before steeping on to the road.

California or New England for the good stuff.

as a retrograde closet anglophile, I have an interest in going to Simpson's in the Strand. I pretty much know it'd be a dire disappointment, but the next time I'm in London, I'll go there.

Both the Royal college of music, and the royal academy of music have museums, if you are interested in such things.

Cali and New England might be making some nice ales now but for the last century baring a few anomalies like Sierra Nevada, anchor steam, the States has been producing pish.

London has no good ale.

Adam's Broadside is a good commercial Bitter, but if you want the good stuff, go up north to Cumbria, and that area.

Not sure why you are calling me a toe rag? You stated there are no places in London that serves good real ales and I provided two links. The first was a current list for over 50 breweries in the London area. Some of these are new others ancient. Sure they mightn’t be mass produced and exported (which IMHO only ruins the product) so you may not have heard of them but there are some excellent drops to be found at all of them. And the second list to refute your statement further was to the hundreds of venues that serve real ale in London.

To suggest that you have to go to all the way Cumbria to find a good ale is just incorrect.

I think I know what I am talking about, I managed & was assistant cellar man at a pub in Liverpool for a couple years, they serve 16 European lagers/ wies/ fruit beers, several local ciders and perries plus there is another 16 taps for real ale. After every hogshead the lines were cleaned and a different ale would be served, they go through hundreds of ales from all over the UK. Not all are to everyone’s taste and sometimes they are shit, but often than not they were exquisite.  The brewers care and skill using the finest of local ingredients and reflecting the preferred drinking styles of the season was always obvious and appreciated.

One of my jobs was to cork the kegs for second fermentation and taste all of the corked kegs assessing whether they were ready for tapping and serving. Some mornings I would have to taste from 30 odd beers-what a job!

I would totally agree. Sadly in the Uk (and Australia for that matter) the only American beer you tend to commonly see is Bud, Coors or Millers.

Fuller’s, the Sam Adams of the UK, is from Chiswick in West London and has a few beers that are not half bad. I like the ESB, and I will never sneer at a pint of Pride.

Not exactly room temperature. Most real ales are served at 4- 8 Celsius. That was the perfect temperature to truly experience the nuisances and taste. Over chilled beer can be pretty bland and tasteless- wet and refreshing but ultimately taste less. Like adding ice to red wine.

That was the beauty of the European draughts, in summer if you wanted a cold beer  you could sink a pint of Pilsner Urquill, Fruh Kolch. In autumn and winter I would enjoy the real ales even more.

Outside of London, yes. That's what I was saying.

Adam's Broadside is a good commercial Bitter, but if you want the good stuff, go up north to Cumbria, and that area.

I kinda like Hobgoblin cask ale...

Ask dave, or what ever name he is going by this week. Get the explanation from him. Find out why he is harassing and lying about me from him. Im getting pretty fucking tired of it.

Look up his isp address, then look up mine. Tell me how i can stalk him.

Mate.... you were asking.  Thats getting involved.

I dont like daveprobable and he doesn't think much of me. A few years back when he and his Thurston Howell the 4th persona first showed up here, i suggested that he should pop out for beers with his local sa bunch of folks. He declined as they were just a bunch of low rent non sailors. Well..... its gone down hill from there, to now when he thinks im stalking the daughter he introduced me to.
