Tacking out of phase now ......but Brunel has starboard advantage on starboard and tide advantage on port so crosses.  Continuing to short tack

It is also a matter of staying in shallower water longer than your opponent.... until the current changes, then they will move out and watch the tacking angles improve...

Apologies if posted.  On the road.  But a close up of Charles about to chew on the wheel.

Would have thought they would have gone live by now.? The Volvo media coverage has to get better. Why have the event and finishes like this with no coverage? Brunel not covering?

By this point event cash flow is probably running low. Plus it is the middle of the night.

The volvooceanrace.com coverage has been fucking awesome, what are you on.

There's still 14miles to go with a VMG of 3-4 knots, and it's the middle of the night, they won't be going live for a little while yet.

A really interesting insight into how the team works. It's easy to forget how simple it is for us hitting refresh every few minutes and seeing the complete picture. These guys are shaking their head wondering how Brunel and AKZo can possibly be in 20knts "just over there" while they wallow in 4.

Vestas is coming into them.

Brunel cover has gotten loose....they are playing the shifts a bit and riding a lift before tacking. Very hard to do that in the dark

Brunel covering and will tack on top of Akzo soon.  12 knots boat speed should see a finish within or near an hour

But they just slammed one on Akzo again, forcing Akzo to tack into the shore again......according to the chart it gets pretty shallow in there,

Tacked onto AK's line 1/2 mile ahead, that was a big call that paid off!

Is it now flat water / flat tide?

1st time I've used Virtual Eye for finish.  Nice option.  Kids like it too.

I reckon, Brunel wouldn’t have gone so far outherwise, the tacking angles have improved too, so I think the current is now with them....

tough for AK from here, follow B, or sail inshore out of the tide into less pressure and hope for something?

and brunel slams the door on akzo again...its like they want to keep akzo inshore

Still rockin and rolling and the cloggies have their imaginary shoelaces tied together I see. The RO must be pissed at these finishes in the black. Maybe they should be made to circle in sight of the line until mid morning to give everyone a chance to assemble or have pm finish demerit points.

Shhhhhhh.

Anything can and will happen.

Big lefty off the shore after that headland . Brunel made the right call with the short covering tack

There are some shallows. Akzo can't do much now. Won't be able to challenge Brunel. :(

Hell yes, big lift just when they needed it.

The big left shift is good for Brunel.  Temporary respite from the tacking dual ....but three more headlands and the wind will be very choppy and shifty coming out of north east like that

Akzo is almost dead astern of Brunel and not much they can do until there is a shift.....the angle is terrible for them to try and tack inshore again

Yeah......just like they "had it" in Newport even closer to the finish.

For sure, the wind will be shifty in the next 10 miles cos of the angle.

Yes...... It makes a big difference which side the current hits the bow. Leeward side, it will push the boats towards the shore towards less current or a back eddy. Windward side would push the boats out towards the middle and more adverse current....

leeward side also gives lifting increased AWS, windward side gives knocking decreased AWS.....

To see the virtual eye when viewing the regular tracker, click on the "3D" button on the far right side of the map, just above the zoom in and zoom out buttons.

If the paint barge hit a layline this could be interesting. But still thing the yellow cloggies have it.

My guess is they’re frantically working to get the live link to a RIB working so they have something to show.

Well done to both Brunel & Akzo. Now let's see if Vestas can catch DFRT. Unlikely but still.
