"pioneering electric propulsion systems"

Recommended Posts

So I read the article......    what is so special about what they have done to call it "pioneering".    Using an electric motor and lithium battery properly sized to their needs sounds pretty normal.   Anyone know anything else special about their setup?

I am similarly curious, and have thus far found no details.

Pioneering because they actually did it.  It's like the pioneers of the west.  We don't just refer to the first guy as the only pioneer.  Certainly electric propulsion of that size is far, far out of the norm today.

I’d say that Conrad Colman was actually the first guy to achieve a zero emission performance boat when he circumnavigated in his IMOCA. Or the J88 with the oceanvolt propulsion system  or any J70 with a torqueedo

But you get more clicks dropping the “Skype” name so what do I know?

Bubi on Acciona did a 98% circumnavigation before Conrad.

It’s powered by eels. Says so in the name -

“the system marks the beginning of a partnership between Carkeek and Zennström on their electric EEL Propulsionventure”

FIFY.....

On a more serious note, I have a “pioneer” electric drive system on my yacht. Still plenty of problems and the technology is not sufficiently mature, diverse or reliable enough for the mainstream  yacht market.....

But I look forward to the day....

Deisel electric?

Gotta define range before televising the revolution.

40 klicks to and from a start line doesn't count.

Yes, try to meet the 4, 8 or 10+ hour offshore motoring requirements.

All electric. I am not promoting/advertising or selling, just a DIY thing. And as I said, not mature or robust enough yet....

I don't get it. Battery powered boats are not new.
