Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Races

This is Team OluKai crossing the Alenuihaha Channel between the Big Island and Maui. This is the first race of the season for the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association.

Camera is in 5, heard it was a windy race, fleet could use some modernization given the crossing they undertake but big sack to go for it.

Those paddlers are beasts. Does anybody know how much speed they add? The boat looks like it's cooking along pretty fast as it is.

Paddling keeps you from slowing down as much in troughs and lulls (see above note re modernization) but when you're cooking you can't pull water so they help the average but not the top end.

No sail on this canoe but still - wow!  Expert steering and surfing.
