I think it could be a combination of things .. Careful trimming of the 3 or 4 sails to reduce drag combined with great work on the helm smells a bit like PBs talent.

It is interesting that Mapfre managed to improve to the point they were able to keep pace with Brunel after the pass.

Not really. TB pulled out 0.8 nm after the pass which is more than you would expect with a one design sailed by top crew (MP is not Scally or TOTP material)

Brunel got up to 1.2 nm ahead after the pass but Mapfre held it at 0.8 nm after they got their act together.

Might have been discussed upthread already:

Different TWAs / modes?

During passing/hunt: TWA 90/80ish, after that when Mapfre held on TWA 120/110ish.

Scroll back:

13. 1430 UTC north of Cape Wrath: That’s when Brunel really started the hunt from 7 nm DTL - TWA went from 120 to well below 90 until Kristiansand.

To reverse 1 nm DTL into 1 nm lead took them approx. 150 nm from 0430 am (south of Edvard Grieg platform) to about 1300 pm (north of the 1st TSS off Farsund) = about 8.5 h. That accounts for a speed difference of 0.24 kt or 1.3%.

Rather substantial imho.

Difference in how much daggerboard is down and the keel angle. Not much dagger at those speeds needed.

Thanks Chasm.

Some notes on the vid: Good question about how many drones/parts were lost the race. The pick of AKZO drone through arches and over the cliffs is best. Can't believe Matt fell for Ugo's "crying' vid -- i's sooooo Latin/ Hallmark sentiment. Choosing the DFRT war sound video well explained.  toenails vid, meh.

Sam's winning video (the TBRU pass of MAPF) well explained. Aubrey analogy worked, but hoped Matt and Clean would comment that a 3hr pass was compressed into a few seconds.

Re the 'breaking news', good heads-up on the Ian Walker article, but the rest is for Jack's thread.
