Boat Speed Signal Dropping Out

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'm racing on a J120 this summer. New boat to me, but definitely not a new boat. The electronics are Garmin, and everything seems to be working well except the BSP signal. I've attached a strip chart image of what we're seeing. It's accurate on the high end, but periodically drops low. The drop-out seems to happen at such a regular frequency that it seems unlikely to be caused by a loose/intermittent connection or bad speed wheel.

Any thoughts on where we should start in diagnosing this one?

Had the same issue two years ago with a NX2 system. It gradually got worse till virtually no data going to display. Replaced transducer and all good after that.

Your signal drops about every 2.5 minutes.

thats most likely a software or timer issue. Simple hardware is unlikely to fail that reproducibly.

If speed sensor is NMEA 0183/2000 there may be some network collision. If sensor is analog/pulse hardwired to instruments then it’s in the box.
