Universal 5411 Head gasket replacement

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Just wrapping up a head gasket replacement on a oday 28 with a universal 5411. The manual says to run the motor 30 minutes then retorque the head bolts. Should this be done when the engine has completely cooled or can it be done while it's still warm?

Btw, some pretty rough corrosion but nothing crossing into the wrong passage ways.

At the risk of getting hollered at, sincerity the original torque was done on a cold engine, it seems that the retorque should be as well.

Yep - a warm or hot engine has expanded so the bolt tension will be increased over cold.

The manual says “then”, not “4 hours later”...

Steel bolts expand about 10% more than the cast iron block and head. Which might have something to do with it. Also “hot” is a more specific temperature than “cold” which could vary greatly depending on climate.
