Watergate reporter warns we are becoming different people because of Trump and it will change the American story

Quote

“Donald Trump is sucking is oxygen out of the American story,” Bernstein told CNN’s Don Lemon. “He is taking the American story and saying, ‘We are going to turn our backs not just on the last 75 years at home and abroad, really on the last 250 years. We are becoming a different kind of person because of his conduct of the president, different kind of country because of his conduct of the presidency.”

He just realized that?

Trumps whole M.O. has been to play on the worst instincts of the lowest levels of American society.

And they love him for it.

I'm sorry, but I don't see it.  Il Cheetolini's reign of 4 or 8 years will be nothing more than a flash in the pan in the grand scheme of things and he certainly hasn't been responsible in just 18 month for what America has become.  These divisions were deep and growing deeper by the day before the orangman took office in Jan 2017.  This slowburn civil war been slowly building for decades.  He is nothing more than a symptom of the problem, and certainly is not the cause.

Our corporate overlords are laughing their asses off right now at Bernstein and this blame all the world's problem's on trumpo.  Anything that keeps the spot light off those that REALLY control the country is good for them.

From the Article:

"But the Democrats have to fight back if they want to succeed and say, ‘This is not the American story Mr. President. The last 250 years in particular, the last 75 years, America leading the world and Democracy, that’s the story.'”

This is truth.  They need a better plan.  The media LOVES the ratings that Trump provides and aren't about to reduce his exposure - that's hard to overcome.  Democrats need to find their center, come up with something they all agree and believe in that's tangible, and start building the case.  They need new spokespeople that aren't 80 year old career politicians.  The only way to disrupt chaos is through consistency of message that appeals to 51% of voters.

My suggestion is Medicare for all.  Obamacare was a stepping stone.  Move on.

I'd modify that: open enrollment for Medicare  is a better option, since it would allow employers to choose not to sponsor insurance beyond taxes already levied and understood. It would allow those who currently have private insurance, and like it, to continue, and there would be a base level of coverage in America which would slow the rate of medical bankruptcies.

But, you'd have to give CMS the power to negotiate drug prices.

Add to this reestablish the role of the EPA in protecting our citizens and our air & water

Rebuild the role and the independence of the CFPB

Reinvest in the State Department, sucking a percentage from our military budget. Bring that shit down into a more manageable level of debt creation

Reform taxes, consider a flat tax proposal

Halt gerrymandering with bipartisan legislation

Invest in infrastructure, especially train and electric bus routes in cities

A metric ton of folks would go for this business and citizen-friendly proposals. You'd anger the defense contractors and their sycophants, but they need some scaling back after winning the first quarter century (given the contracts already made).

"The only way to disrupt chaos is through consistency of message that appeals to 51% of voters."

Dem's have difficulty with consistency due to the coalition nature of the party, unlike the iron discipline of the R's.

I'm not sure they haven't come up with a message that appeals to 51%;  the political system  has changed so that majority opinion influences less than the opinion of wealth.

Hillary popular vote 48%

Support for same sex marriage 64%

Support for access to abortion 66%

support for free trade  52%

support for ACA  54%

Support for tighter gun control 68%

(various sources, mostly Pew and Gallup)

Which 51% should they target?
