Ankle Brace for Dingy Sailing?

Recommended Posts

I injured a tendon in my ankle running a half marathon and the injury causes issue hiking.  I'm looking to see if anyone else with an ankle injury has used anything other than the usual braces you can get at Walgreen's or CVS for sailing.  Because I'm sailing in salt water, something that does not have to put in the washing machine after every sail would be nice.

Better check with your favorite orthopedic surgeon on this one. You only get two ankles. Be careful. Happy Sailing!

If its the anterior ankle (which would have most (-) effect in hiking) there are not any braces that will be very helpful.  If if is medial or lateral ankle then lace up / figure 8 strapping type braces can help support either of those .  Most ankle braces are built for ligamentous injuries whether torn, or stretched.  Compression, Ice and NSAIDs will be helpful.  Be sure you know what you are treating first.  Might be worth checking in with someone Sports Med trained that understands sailing and the mechanics of what you are doing. (i.e.: laser hiking, droop hiking)  Why hike when you can trap!  Good luck

The chances are that what you need is to learn the correct type of strapping which you can then do yourself. Braces are there to prevent the same injury occurring again. A good ankle brace stops you from rolling the ankle while it sounds like your problem is that the ligament is "complaining" about normal use. A strapping might take the load off the ligament. I would be seeing a physio or any other professional who specialises in sports strapping.

Thanks.  I guess I need to find an orthopedist or physical therapist who understands sailing.  For some reason trying to explain it to them so far has gone nowhere.  However, in the mean time they have me doing all these exercises to build up the muscles in the ankle.  I just  don't trust it will be enough for serious sailing.
