This kind of focus on woman is not my cuppa tea. And that's completely different from sexual interest.

Not ok here, nor on the homepage.

Nope, someone is being treated in a manner I find really offensive. Count on me to speak up.

Expertise and respect in one field -- sailing, moviemaking, moneymaking -- isn't green light to be a shithead.

If she was so mortally offended by men seeing her butt, she wouldn't sail in that thong.

OTOH that's not a license to make all sorts of crude remarks, I agree with you about that.

How about observing that it just looks like one more way the Laser is a platform for embarassment and discomfort? I've crunched my own 'nads on the gun'l a lot, the sailorette in the pic looks like she's risking a rather personal injury.

I guess you weren't around when the first reply a newbie received from their original post in DA was "Show us your wife's tits!"  I was actually more expecting to hear something on what many would opine was a gay slur.

This is OK: "Damn, that lady is hot!"

This is not OK: "Hehe. She's got knee pads. <insinuating that she's a fellatio slut>"

I'm not going to get on a high horse, but I will at least comment that dudes making the latter kind of comments are lame.

What I find hilarious is that the same guys who complain about women being prudes are so often the same guys who slut-shame a woman whenever she does anything remotely sexual. It's like: "hey dipshits, guess why the ladies are prudes? BECAUSE YOU FUCKING SLUT SHAME THEM WHENEVER THEY DO ANYTHING SEXUAL!"

I swear to god, dudes can be such fucking morons.

So, let me just end w/ this:

Damn, that lady is freaking HOT!

And

I'm very happy she's part of the sailing community, I hope to see her out on the water, and i'd be happy to shake hands w/ her after a sailing event. Good on her for enjoying herself!!!

I think she is wearing normal shorts and got caught out by combo of wardrobe, situation and pro photog with high shutter rate. I doubt she chose her attire thinking she would achieve fame by nearly exposing her hoo-haa.

If she wants the image on the web, fair enough. The image gives me a creepy upskirt voyeur vibe.

From the top:

"Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version:

  1. Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses
  2. Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game.
  3. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7

If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.

We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement.

Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.

If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough."

@bill4 - those are not my rules, and not even the community rules. That's the very narrow subset that'll get you banned immediately.  Where's discrimination, hate, abuse, threats, suicide ideation, thinspiration... ? lot of things most folks would not stand are not listed there.

Let me illustrate it like this: @DTA gets told off for posting about a catamaran in the dinghy forum. Doug gets flamed to no end for being ... Doug. We get upset over SPAM, which barely wastes a bit of your time.

This shows that we do have standards of respect, and we enforce them, as a community. They cover boat types (or: using the right forum), and the waste of our precious time (Doug, SPAM).

Let's extend those standards to cover basic respect for other humans. It's not a big ask.

This site keeps failing the daughter / wife test.

I’m the only male and most avid sailor in our family of five. I look for opportunities to share sailing content with family members. Even when I come across interesting content I would never share SA links with my family. They are not prudes, quite the opposite. They, like their friends, are educated, independent, cosmopolitan women with no interest in being around people who are into objectifying women.

I lose because I can’t share interesting sailing content. The web site in the long run looses because my daughters are more representative of the future market than the old men using this site for soft porn.

So now that we've had our adolescent snarky comments along with moral outrage, what kind of boat is it?

It looks like a Laser with its shorts riding up.

Your outrage is downright silly.

All I see in the photo is a good looking athletic young female scrambling back onto her sailboat.

People in my part of the country sail on our local lake wearing much less or even nothing.

Those of you who are all wrapped up in the fact she is barely clad are not seeing her photo as I see it.

My post was intended as humor.

“If you are looking at the boat rather than the pretty girl  you might be gay.”

Let me add to that:

If you felt compelled to rage about the post, you are not fully comfortable with your sexuality.

Gov, I am with ya! Well not quite sure where you are going with your last sentence but that's OK... It's OK to disagree or not even be sure where you are going with that...

Bottom line in our current society it's fashionable to be PC and "offended" by anything. We have gone from, "I disagree with you". OK that's fine we can all have our options and disagreements are fine, we are not all the same. TO THIS: I am offended by, insert whatever, and the fact that you are not offended as well shows you are a male pig that has not "evolved" yet. Everyone must think the same way. NOT OK!

Good grief Charlie Brown!

I'm with @couchsurfer. You guys can pat each other in the back all you want. If you had young daughters, nieces, any young woman you care about in your life interested in sailing, and sailing well, you'd be ashamed to point them at interesting, relevant discussion threads in this forum.

Was there an era in our culture that mixed sports with uncouth sexism? Yes there was. Those who enjoyed did not notice or chose not to notice that it was "fun for a few" and just plain horrible to a lot of people. You're one of the few that had fun? Now that you know it hurts others, at the very least it excludes them... how about let it go?

My kid -- 8 yo boy, avid sailor, technically brilliant, helms an 18ft foiling catamaran at >15kt, loves geeking out on sailing topics -- ... and I won't show him SA. It has the brilliance of say, Steve Clark posting, and the complete shit of this thread.

Timeout!!!

I am not always a fan of what Scot says or does, thus why I pretty much stay off the front page, but the forum rules are pretty clearly stated on what you can and cannot do on SA. Where does is say that all content needs to be G rated for all? IT DOES NOT!!!

I agree with you that some of the content here, even on dinghy anarchy, is not appropriate for an 8 year old. Double that at 16 I think most teenagers would be OK here. Just my option there, obviously parents need to pay attention on what/where their kids are doing/going on the web. Not an easy job for sure but the web is here and I don't see it going away. It's also not going to be G rated, EVER.

I am sorry that Scot is not running his business as you see he should. Bottom line if you don't like the content then take your business elsewhere. Just like any other business you don't like how it is run.

Gouvernail, you may be confusing disappointment with outrage. I’m not outraged at SA...I don’t have high expectations. I’m disappointed that a site which occasionally has interesting content (some of it from you) has so much off-putting content that I choose not to share it with friends and family.

I wish SA were a site that was a welcoming place for more people regardless of their gender, sexual orientation or comfort with their sexual orientation. It’s not just that I care about others. I care about myself. I like to share interesting content with people who I care about and who interest me. I don’t want to have to add a filter of “will they be offended” because they aren’t into juvenile male hetero humour. It’s probably a certain insecurity on my part...I don’t want people I respect to think the humour on this site is representative of my point of view.

I’m comfortable with my sex and sexual orientation but that doesn’t mean I can’t empathise with those who either have a different sex or orientation, or for that matter aren’t comfortable in their situation.

I’d rather explore interesting sailing topics than juvenile heterosexual male humour. That type of humour tends to not be very funny nor welcoming to a large share of the population. I don’t think the males who might prefer the boat to the girl are likely to feel particularly welcomed by threads like this. What about the girls who might prefer the girl to the boat...What about the girls who might want to participate in sports without wondering what photographers and internet posters are lurking...

To Hobie Dog’s point, I’m free to take my business elsewhere or actually with the revenue model of this business I’m free to reduce the viewership that the site can market to its advertisers. I probably visit this site half as often as I would if it where more welcoming to all. In our family this site turns off 80% of the potential marketable viewers. With my 50% reduction that’s a 90% reduction in the potential value of our family to this site and it’s advertisers. I assume the site owners have concluded that the ribald content brings in a greater or more valuable viewership than my family. That’s their business decision to make. I’m not outraged just disappointed.

I agree w/ KC375. I don't watch the front page of Anarchy much, but when I have I've seen stuff like "Hottest Sailing Babe Contest" or other such stuff. So, it's like - well, this is where all the people who know about dinghy sailing hang out. So, I kinda have to hang out here too if I want to stay in the know. But it's kinda like visiting a seedy adult cinema. Like KC375, I'm not outraged and I don't complain. It is what it is and I deal with it. But, like KC375 said, maybe the people who run the seedy adult cinema might want to know about the viewership that they're missing. Or, again, maybe they don't care. And that's fine too. I'll just keep peeking in at the dinghy forum inside the adult cinema, hoping nobody notices me watching. And if they do, I'll say "I just read it for the informative dinghy articles ... I promise!"

Expectations..... IMHO cat-calling and wolf-whistling was boorish behavior. If you think it's funny to holler at women on the street, "Hey baby, nice tits!" then obviously anything that happens here on SA seems kinda tame.

Women who walk past construction sites (for example) would be smart to expect such behavior, or walk a different way. That's just the way the world is..... slowly changing for the better perhaps.

However, think about this for a second...... if a construction crew comes to work in front of your house, do you think it's fine for them to bring their crude and boorish behavior to YOUR home? Or perhaps your neighborhood would be a better analogy.

What kind of neighborhood do we want this to be? I join in the wolf-whistling, sometimes, on a low level. But I'd like to think this is not a boorish, crude neighborhood that I would keep Mrs Steam away from.

Well there you go, you are free to complain to the cook that you are disappointed in their cooking, too spicy. But you are probably better served and will be less frustrated if you just try a different restaurant. SA seems to have their business model and it seems to be working quite well for them. Sure you can be disappointed and complain but I suspect it falls on deaf ears.

A bunch of boorish, disgusting, pathetic, juvenile half wits debating with a similar number of sanctimonious, over bearing, politically correct, sensitive new-agers. This shouldn’t take long to sort out.

I will say that on the disgust-o-meter, this photo barely moves the needle in comparison to the vulgarity found elsewhere in this site.

Well, it's also a case of trying to move the needle on our "neighborhoods" culture. There are always people who enjoy coming in and trying to be disgusting, we can't do anything about that. But we can make the tone a bit less juvenile.

OTOH we've seen in the past that the old SA tradition of "show us your wife/girlfriend's tits and fuck off" serves a somewhat useful screening function.

Yes, I have a daughter. She is a journalist and in broadcasting. Following a two minute review,  I would surmise she would agree with my opinion that this photo is at the low end of the offensive material posted here. And, she would probably agree that this photo is, indeed, "worthy" of this particular website. The fucking bar is low here.

She would quickly dismiss the photo as inconsequential and comment on the illiteracy of a number of alleged adult contributors to these blogs who make up words, spell things incorrectly, have the grammar of an 8 yr old (Martin's son notwithstanding) and generally abuse and brutalize the English language. (Insert juvenile smiley or squirmy face here)

Disclosure  -  I posted a comment for which I was scolded as it was found offensive by the more vocal, so I just deleted it to avoid the onslaught. I don't feel that strongly about it and, for me, it isn't a hill worth dying on. If this picture was tossed into a school newsletter, I would certainly take exception. But here?  Not so much. I do understand the sensitivities of some, but this is a site full of trash, so I agree with the "if you don't like it, don't look" sentiment.

And therein lies the rub. This site isn't just full of trash. It has some of the best sailing know-how to be found online.

Can we separate the gold from the trash?

Well there you go, you are free to complain to the cook that you are disappointed in their cooking, too spicy. But you are probably better served and will be less frustrated if you just try a different restaurant. SA seems to have their business model and it seems to be working quite well for them. Sure you can be disappointed and complain but I suspect it falls on deaf ears.

If SA was a restaurant, it would be one where most of the cooking is done by the customers. I see this dialogue as one for the people who post on SA.

As distasteful as much of the content may be regarded, it is true to form:

anarchy

noun absence of authority, breakdown of administration, chaos, confusion, discord, disobedience, disorder, disorderliness, disorganization, disregard, indiscipline, insubordination, insurgence, interregnum, irresponsibility, lawlessness, licentia, misgovernment, misrule, mob law, mob rule, nihilism, political disorder, rebellion, revolution, riot, sedition, tumult, turmoil, unruliness, uprising

There are options available out there, and most posters would welcome a PM if one wants to carry on a discussion on a particular topic with no chance of being offended. I doubt either of the Clark's would reply to a PM with a string of "f bombs" or "c bombs", or a photo some would consider should be rated "R". Nor any quote from the POTUS...

I am in no way offended by the image in the OP. I don't think most of the people protesting that image were offended by it.

I just hope the woman in the image is OK with that image being shared online. This is without regard to any image release in the regatta boilerplate, I don't think a reasonable person would expect to have that angle captured.

I got caught humping a Force5 one time.

Edit- for me it is a different thing from pics of tits and fannies that show up mostly in the other subforums.

True, the problem is that the gold sinks to the bottom while the trash floats on top.

Seriously Dex you had to go there! Now I am offended! LOL

I guess actually identifying what type of boat is less fun than debating the Kings of Egypt.

So... I'll go figure it out. Figure if I can identify what regatta she is at it should be pretty easy. Boat looks like a Melges 14 but has aluminum spars so has to be something else.

The rudder looks really close to the laser too

This photo originally graced the front cover of the website back in August. The Sailing Anarchy forum crowd gave it the full treatment with more vigor on both sides than this thread. Plenty of colorful language and graphic images for all. Some particularly attractive samples from the VWAP collection...

Anyway, in the aforementioned Sailing Anarchy thread, there are two or three additional photos where we learn it was a photo shoot of some sort taken by a Russian photographer of a Russian boat (based on the advertising) and, presumably, a Russian model/sailor. I suspect it is a Russian ploy to hack into the Sailing Anarchy data base for nefarious reasons.

Anyway, the evidence points to Russia as the place to find out the type of boat.

Yea I saw parts of that thread and the additional pictures but I am trying to stay off the main SA forum.

Maybe I'll do a shot or two of rum tonight and venture back just for this investigation! LOL

There is a clone of the Laser widely sailed in Russia called the "Luch" - Russian for "ray" as in ray of light.

The Ukrainians wanted to build some Laser-like boats but didn't want to make Luchs because it is a rip-off of the Laser. (Apparently Ukranians care more about IP law than the Russians do.) So the Ukrainians decided to build a boat which would not be the same as the Laser or the Luch, which would use new trends in design and technology, and which could also serve as a training boat for sailors who wanted to sail real Luchs or Lasers later. They came up with the Ultra.

Now I don't think the boat in the notorious photo actually is an Ultra - the shape of the transom is slightly different, but I strongly suspect that its origins are similar.

You can find the full story about the Ultra at https://fd-cs2830444.prom.ua/p620159752-yahta-ultra-shvertbot.html

There are many photos of the mystery boat racing with Luchs or Lasers at https://www.facebook.com/wiwschool/

And the original photo that stirred up all this discussion, along with many other photos of Luchs or Lasers racing with the mystery boat can be found on the Facebook page of Ольга Кашаева

Thanks tillerman!

Interesting and 'some kind of Eastern Block Laser type boat' seems to be the answer.

That window and seam location just aft is MKI standard sail design. Good for her in a full rig in what looks like good breeze.

The Cunningham grommet location has been moved so looks like some 'Eastern Block Engineering' is at play with the sail as well. :)

Here are some more views of the mystery boat without the - ahem- distractions of the original shot.

Looks like someone has redesigned the laser to make it even more uncomfortable to hike out on.

Comfort?

Nobody sails a Laser because they want to be comfortable.

Rule #4. You sail a Laser because you like pain. The sooner you appreciate this fact, the happier you'll be.

I dunno, I like the way that looks much more than the standard Laser. The rounded inner cockpit edge would be a treat.

The gunnel edge looks like a nightmare, it has in effect made the deck narrower, and taken away righting moment. I used to hike with pointed toes, a tight toe strap and my knees about 100mm from the gunnel wearing a 4kg weight jacket, with decent hiking pants and being fit enough to be on the water for 8 hours a day the Laser was actually quite comfortable, after 3 scopes on my knees and old age creeping up just looking at a laser makes me hurt. What I would give to be young again knowing what I know now........

I haven't looked at the front page of SA in months, for the reasons articulated above. I just now decided - what the heck. Let me give it a shot. And I see this. I mean, whatever. This site can do whatever it wants, so no lectures from me. But "Nice *box*" - what are these guys, 14 years old? Anyway, I just thought it was hilariously ridiculous that literally the first time I look in months I see this at the top.

Cripes, you guys found it. Awright, flame away. But before you rip me to shreds, remember that the LWL is only 54 inches. A beautiful hull on a 54 inch waterline is the fluid dynamic equivalent of tits on a rhino ... yeah, necessary, but perhaps only to baby rhinos.

Apologies Redboat, they found my scrawny ass anyway ...
