commotion 17 #1 Posted August 22, 2018 Hello. Considering a J22 for PHRF racing in a fleet with ratings ranging from 168 to about 200. Can the J22 be competitive in this group ? Thanks.
TyeDyedGary 3 #2 Posted August 22, 2018 In Galveston Bay the J-22 PHRF is 174. While we have a large fleet of J-22's in the area, we often have to race against bigger boats. And, Yes we are competitive. Mind you it takes good crew work, but generally you will find a J-22 in the top three on any given PHRF run race, and that is racing against PHRF's across the board. Not just in the narrow range you stated. Go out and have some fun.
JimBowie 332 #3 Posted August 22, 2018 Own one for a decade rated at 180. Plenty competitive. 24s hated us surfing by them almost every regatta.
SailorMatt 0 #4 Posted August 25, 2018 As long as there is wind you will be competitive! We race Wednesday nights up in B.C, Canada and we found a 155% genoa was a must have for going upwind in anything under 8 knots of breeze. A mast head kite will also make things a little more fun if you want to go faster...

JBOATTROUBLEMAKER 38 #6 Posted February 13, 2019 It will be pretty competitive, so long as you never race in the ocean...unless you want to get wet
