Ft. Lauderdale to Key West

Recommended Posts

Ok,

So we're thinking about trailering our 105 down for the Lauderdale to Key West race. Anyone know a good yard to put the boat in and step the mast. Also probably gonna pull the boat in Key West.

Thanks

Not sure where to put it in but there are 2 marinas on Stock island  to have it hauled and have not had a problem with either. Florida has restrictions on over width boats during the weekend on the road.  Don't speed through Deer Key!

Dania Cut is a good spot to put in, or you could to to Lauderdale Marine if you want to spend a little more.

Robbies on Stock Island to haul out.

Have you budgeted for strip clubs?  Twenty years ago I was there for KWRW and the only two places I went were the strip club and the ATM.  YMMV.

Smart strippers also provide "Boat cleaning" services...but rates may change depending on service level.

I brought a melges 30 to that race from MI maybe 4 years ago. Get your budget together add 20%. Then have a few beers that night and double it.  When you wake up in the morning it should be around $6,500 not counting hotel rooms and assuming you are driving it down.

Does anyone know about escorts for trailering over width boats (j105) in Kew West. Will be traveling on a Monday

Most of the escorts I knew down in that area worked out of R Donuts but as mentioned above that place of business is no longer there. The conch chowder bar/restaurant just down the street may still offer what you need!

Damn! I just found out that 'Dirty Ernie's' closed in 2017! Is nothing sacred? Ft Lauderdale is going to the dogs I tell you...

Sad I tell you.

I looked into the race earlier this year and Monday is a holiday so you can't travel with oversized loads.  I would have to read again but I think you are stuck in KW until Tuesday after finishing the race Thrusday/Friday with an oversize load

alternatively, leave at night when there is less traffic and just go for it

SORC Addressed (what I considered to be) the biggest hiccup in participation which was the Wednesday start date - requiring people take an additional day off of work.

Next biggest hiccup is the split in the rating rules between IRC and ORC. This is dragging participation down up and down the east cost. The best thing I can offer is to go with would be to dual score the ORC/IRC fleet or go with ORC and try to lead some kind of convergence between ORR and ORC.

There hasn't been a race this slow since 2012 when it took everyone 24 hours longer to get to key west than average.

Then they should drop SORC from the event....

That was a LONG race.  We were something like 42 hours to go 180 miles.  It was insane.

And the last 8 miles took 3 hours.

I've unfortunately experienced worse than that.  The last six miles of the 2017 down the bay race took us 8 hours.  Had to wait for the tide to change there was so little breeze.
