Headsail ripping out of foil - how to remove McLube Sailkoat

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

We were sailing along close hauled, sitting at 10knots when all of a sudden the luff of the headsail was no longer attached to the foil.  We changed down to the #4 and a few hours later the same thing happened again.

Now two things, firstly the foil is new (6 weeks old), but we have used it twice now in very similar and maybe even windier, conditions with no issues.  Secondly, immediately prior to this race, we sprayed the foil slots with McLube Sailkoat.

I am wondering if smart people here think that McLube could be the cause of this sudden issue that we have never seen before?  And if so, what's a good technique for removing the McLube from the foil tracks?

Thanks!

Sounds like your foil is a different size than the luff tape on the sails.  The tape is held in because it's larger than the slot in the foil.  Or it's supposed to be.  Not by friction.  It's not the mclube.

Was it the same headsail all the times? If not seems like related with tape and slot dimensions to me also.

sure the foil hasn't been damaged at the head (split open), or luff tape at head.

Once a sail starts to pull out at an end, its game over almost instantaneously..

Either way - it aint the mclube.

Yep, the foil is damaged for sure

Given the foil is brand new, seems to me it's more likely the foil is for #6 tape and your headsails have #5 tape or the luff tape on your sails are badly worn. Either way, closely inspect the foil and talk to your sailmaker.

+1 on foil size. Although it's straightforward to get new tapes put on.

On another note, there has been some (unconfirmed) speculation that spraying mclube can damage foil extrusions (it's the accelerant in the can, not the mclube) and it's been advised to spray onto the tapes themselves rather than the foil.

+1 on the replacement foil being to big (#6 Vs #5) the differences are subtle but important. Rather than replace all the luffs on the your headsails maybe replace the foil with the correct size and sell the #6.
