toad 610 #1 Posted November 19, 2018 She really doing their heads in, maga caps are exploding all over DC. https://splinternews.com/conservative-nerds-desperately-try-and-fail-to-dunk-on-1830535252 Quote Yeah, the best part of AOC’s game is that she hits the next generation of movement conservatives right where it hurts: in their pretension. Movement conservatism, as it exists today, is a hustle designed to distract from the fact that “conservatism” is just a set of policies that pay down the psychological wage of whiteness to its voters. The people who care about actual, genuine conservative principles like fairness, honor, personal responsibility, and judging people by the content of their character? They left the Republican Party years ago. What’s left is a bunch of people who tell themselves, over and over, that they are fair, honorable and personally responsible, all while enacting policies designed to make sure that ten good people starve before one nickel of their taxes goes into a black person’s pocket. But precisely because it’s a hustle, and precisely because the people most conned by that hustle are movement conservatives themselves, because they don’t want to admit to themselves what they are, AOC can just redirect, and hit them right in the fact that they aren’t on the level, and never intended to be on the level. She’s got an amazing gift for cutting right through the crap and hitting these jabronis right in their pretension. Because it always comes back to the fact that, at base, they just don’t want to see people of color have stuff. And the best part is, they might have been able to beat her in an argument on the level. AOC is smart, and actually better-informed than your average Congressperson-elect (they really, really aren’t normally that smart. Smart is what they pay their staff to be), but she’s only 29. She hasn’t had time to become an expert on policy. Elizabeth Warren can explain how a policy can screw over the poor a lot more technically than AOC can, largely because Warren has had 40 years of experience taking apart policies and putting them back together, which is longer than AOC has been alive. If conservatives actually had ideas beyond “never let a black person get an unearned penny”, and they were willing to actually argue in good faith about it, AOC might be beatable. But they don’t, so she remains champion supreme of shutting down Twitter trolls. Because she can always cut back to “you just don’t believe people should have healthcare,” and it’s always true.

Sol Rosenberg 6,069 #13 Posted November 20, 2018 The author gets on the right track by noting that actual conservatives left the GOP long ago, then jumps right off of the track by saying that they fell for the con. “Conservative” and “Republican” are very different things in 2018. AOC makes Republican heads explode, which we have heard is Presidential. As long as she represents the people who voted her into office instead of what the democRAT party and/or big capital $ays for her to do, especially when those interests conflict, she’s fine by me.

I think she's woefully naive, and as such will be incapable of accomplishing much of anything she aspires to, but I'm also hopeful that her ideas will spark discussion amongst the people who do know how to make things happen, and that that discussion will create improvement. We aren't going to fix anything if we don't focus beyond political marginalization of the people who think differently than we do.

But it's not the way your great grandparents and their neighbors set it up. Do you realize that in the old days we had to stick our fingers in a little hole in a metal disc, that had corresponding numbers, and letters imprinted beneath it, and actually rotate that disc 7 times for a local phone call?...... YUP! That is TRUE! And if you wanted to call a person who lived in a town 4 towns away, you needed to add an extra number...... YUP! TRUE DAT! And if you wanted to call a person in another state, or another country.... You only had to use your finger once. Yup. Just use the "0" hole and the nice lady would ask you who you were trying to contact..... ALL TRUE! I’m not that old, but I recall watching the second hand talking to Grandma because the rates were so high, even on a Sunday.

d'ranger 2,538 #80 Posted November 21, 2018 There are some excellent pieces written on the demise of Venezuela, I posted a link to one some time ago. It doesn't fit the scare tactic of SOCIALISM!!!!!! to scare the GOP faithful. Why? Because somehow anyone that discusses democratic socialism is planning on doing a Venezuela on the USA. It never ends.

Why do you joust with and insult lesser beings here ? Perhaps this is part of your therapy ? Are you going to run for President ? Can we send you money ? Do you have a golden cow we can pray to for protection from everything you oppose ? I would happily surrender my opinions to your wit and wisdom and thus live in a perfect world. God Bless you Ishmael. You are a treasure in a sea of sad people. It's about time you recognized my genius. I think I should be Time's Person of the Year.
