Quote

Yeah, the best part of AOC’s game is that she hits the next generation of movement conservatives right where it hurts: in their pretension.

Movement conservatism, as it exists today, is a hustle designed to distract from the fact that “conservatism” is just a set of policies that pay down the psychological wage of whiteness to its voters. The people who care about actual, genuine conservative principles like fairness, honor, personal responsibility, and judging people by the content of their character? They left the Republican Party years ago. What’s left is a bunch of people who tell themselves, over and over, that they are fair, honorable and personally responsible, all while enacting policies designed to make sure that ten good people starve before one nickel of their taxes goes into a black person’s pocket.

But precisely because it’s a hustle, and precisely because the people most conned by that hustle are movement conservatives themselves, because they don’t want to admit to themselves what they are, AOC can just redirect, and hit them right in the fact that they aren’t on the level, and never intended to be on the level. She’s got an amazing gift for cutting right through the crap and hitting these jabronis right in their pretension. Because it always comes back to the fact that, at base, they just don’t want to see people of color have stuff.

And the best part is, they might have been able to beat her in an argument on the level. AOC is smart, and actually better-informed than your average Congressperson-elect (they really, really aren’t normally that smart. Smart is what they pay their staff to be), but she’s only 29. She hasn’t had time to become an expert on policy. Elizabeth Warren can explain how a policy can screw over the poor a lot more technically than AOC can, largely because Warren has had 40 years of experience taking apart policies and putting them back together, which is longer than AOC has been alive. If conservatives actually had ideas beyond “never let a black person get an unearned penny”, and they were willing to actually argue in good faith about it, AOC might be beatable.

But they don’t, so she remains champion supreme of shutting down Twitter trolls. Because she can always cut back to “you just don’t believe people should have healthcare,” and it’s always true.

I hope she can effect a positive change - but, I'll share the thought that it's easy to aspire to great accomplishments when you don't understand what it takes to make them happen.

The Republican congress has shown they don't understand what it takes to make things happen. They have shown they know how to grift, and r.e the OP - it's no secret Republicanism in DC has been a multi-decade hustle. Grifters like Bolton, Ed Whelan, pop up with regularity. Sometimes the grifters hit it big at a young age - just look at the millions Nick Ayers (Pence's COS) raked in from grifting, all before he hit 40.

It's obvious she is referring to the slave based economy our country was founded on. We fought a war that altered that. The capitalists/humanists won....

Socialism, and capitalism are expressions of humanism. Slavery, and oppression is not humanism. They are expression of evil. You can chose with your vote, or your life.

But you can't get what you want by vilifying a young member of congress.

The author gets on the right track by noting that actual conservatives left the GOP long ago, then jumps right off of the track by saying that they fell for the con.

“Conservative” and “Republican” are very different things in 2018.

AOC makes Republican heads explode, which we have heard is Presidential. As long as she represents the people who voted her into office instead of what the democRAT party and/or big capital $ays for her to do, especially when those interests conflict, she’s fine by me.

She won’t get pitched out. They can try to primary her with a Wall Street toady, but I don’t see that working, as long as she does what her constituents want.

In truth, I kind of like her.  Politically, she's a bit of a baby giraffe which is refreshing.

Would I have voted for her?  Probably not but I'm not unhappy she won.  The house should be a rebellious bunch.

Perhaps.... But she hasn't even been sworn in to office yet.

Let's give her a little growing room.

Governor/Senator Scott has plenty of history to comment upon. As do many others, but Ocasio-Cortez is a fresh voice. Let's let her speak before we condemn her.

She's not from my district either, but I'd like to hear what she has to say. She shit canned an entrenched old school Democrat, who thought he couldn't lose. But he ended up at least partially endorsing her.

I highly doubt she’s one and done. That she won against a member of the leadership with considerable seniority illustrated a turning point in the demographics of her district. All this malarkey about the big bad party recruiting a challenger is just Republican nonsense. She’s obviously popular locally and nationally. I think she’s brilliant but also thought her opponent was classy on election night.

Yes, and no. The Rightwing are mobilizing forces that will make people dislike AOC in a decade or two for reasons they can't define and aren't based in reality. They sense a short term rallying point for the incels, and a long term potential threat. This is how they roll.

Lefty - if she was on the right, and saying things that were counter to the left's position on things, would you still be amenable to "giving her a little growing room", or would you be working to marginalize her potential impact?

I'm not generally aware of conservatives, or liberals "messages" until they get into office and start doing things, unless they make a big splash before getting elected. Other than that she beat the hell out of an entrenched Democrat who was so confident that he didn't bother to campaign, I know nothing about her.' What I know about DeSantis was all over the TV here for months before the election, and I did not like what I saw, but sure, I'll give him some room to grow. I doubt that he will, but one never knows.

Fair 'nuff - I think that Ms Ocasio is sincere in her desire to make things better.  I think she's woefully naive, and as such will be incapable of accomplishing much of anything she aspires to, but I'm also hopeful that her ideas will spark discussion amongst the people who do know how to make things happen, and that that discussion will create improvement.  We aren't going to fix anything if we don't focus beyond political marginalization of the people who think differently than we do.

From what I can tell, having lived through a gentrification process in my 'hood, the original owners of the houses are pretty happy, as they'll see massive increases in house values. Folks who rent, or thought they could buy, will have to move.

that's pretty much the definition of gentrification.  the rich get richer and poor get the shaft - the nyc outer borough dream

there's a lot of rent stabilized housing in that area for non-amazonian types

and a lot of small businesses on the ground floors

Once the 'new' posters are identified as returds they go on ignore  - many years ago I did a thread based on an email from a friend (no longer) on the 33 reasons why I will never vote for a Democrat.  Recently Ed Young, pastor of 2nd Baptist in Houston had this to say http://www.outsmartmagazine.com/2018/11/houston-pastor-claims-all-democrats-are-godless-at-ousted-gop-congressmans-watch-party/

It is one of the largest churches in Houston and he has led it as long as I can remember.  There was a time when I wondered if these clowns were lefties just trying to make the Right look stupid. Nope, the ignorance and hatred runs too deep - nobody could pretend to be that deplorable

edit: the gathering in the link is for Rep Culberson who was defeated by a woman Democrat - one of her ads featured a long time friend, Republican who is now listed as an independent.  The GOP is not fairing well with educated people these days.

So is THAT an argument?

Quick... Parrot another meme.

You are arguing with a hubcap. Keep that in mind when crafting your response.

Indoctrinated Democrat loyalists use juvenile insults to prop up their fragile self esteem.

So how long have you been a Democrat?  Because you use juvenile insults on a constant basis. What is wrong with you? Do you think what you write just goes away?

Venezuela was not destroyed by "socialism", it was destroyed by despotism, and a greedy capitalist megalomaniac....

 Ring any bells?

Socialism is where the few remaining greedy capitalists run the country.

There are some excellent pieces written on the demise of Venezuela, I posted a link to one some time ago.  It doesn't fit the scare tactic of SOCIALISM!!!!!! to scare the GOP faithful.

Why? Because somehow anyone that discusses democratic socialism is planning on doing a Venezuela on the USA.  It never ends.

https://www.thelocal.dk/20151101/danish-pm-in-us-denmark-is-not-socialist

Speaking at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Danish PM Lars Løkke Rasmussen told students that he had “absolutely no wish to interfere the presidential debate in the US” but nonetheless attempted to set the record straight about his country.

""I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism. Therefore I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy,” Rasmussen said"

Proof we could follow their environmental, infrastructure, regulatory and educational and safety net ideas but the Republicans wouldn’t have to swallow their principles (again).

So you are a "shape shifting"  student of intellectual "strip tease" .    That is very impressive.    Why do you joust with and insult lesser beings here ?   Perhaps this is part of your therapy ?   Are you going to run for President ?  Can we send you money ?   Do you have a golden cow we can pray to for protection from everything you oppose ?   I would happily surrender my opinions to your wit and wisdom and thus live in a perfect world.   God Bless you Ishmael.    You are a treasure in a sea of sad people.

It's about time you recognized my genius. I think I should be Time's Person of the Year.
