Whoops. Someone needs to tell the masses that her proposal is counter to the Entitlement Class’ interests. It seems too popular.

AOC is great at getting rightwingers to step on their own dicks over and over and over.

It sounds like she understood the subject material well enough to get a job as a bartender.

Really depends on two big factors..... what the individual wants to do. It's a free country (in theory)..... and the state of the economy.

Example- when I got out of the Navy, I was a propulsion plant operator and a calibration technician (I was also the best control system troubleshooter in the Navy, but that didn't even get me a 2nd cup of coffee). Be that as it may, I sat thru a bunch of engineering seminars and collected a bunch of certifications including an American Bureau of Shipping 2nd Engineers license with steam endorsement, and I had people beating down my door waving money at me to go to work for them.

I eventually dropped back to part-time work so I could complete a college degree (BSME) and when finished, the country was in the early '90s recession.... the one that ousted George Sr. Out of my engineering class, fewer than 20% got jobs in the engineering field. There was zero recruiting. 4 years earlier, it was over 80% and there were recruiters chasing engineering students around campus. I went back to full-time for small contractng comapny I was already working for, or I'd have been in the same boat.

In short, basing the level of Ms Ocasio-Cortez economics knowledge on her being a bartender is very much judging a book by it's cover.

Jeebus. All of my besties are bartenders. All are smarter than most men I've met.

One very wealthy guy I know sez, "Crab, while men are sleeping, women are planning, scheming, and conniving."

One other old pfart said when we finally get a woman pres is when we'll have one payer health care.

Makes sense to me and kudos to HRC for giving it a go.

What I really like about aoc is her willingness to add some fucking transparency to the day-by-day crap we all know goes on.

If Rump can be pres, AOC can be pres in my book.

I'm one of those confident guys that can dance. The one leaving with the babe.

Just sayin.

I'm not certain exactly what defines an expert. I'm clearly not an expert on experts. But if there's a magical 'expert' needle with bartender on one side and some chick who graduated cum laude from BU with a double major Economics and International Relations on the other then the needle is pointing decidedly in the direction of the chick.

So the mere existence of a BA in something makes someone an expert of the "shall not be questioned" type?

What if the second one couldn’t obtain a job in either economics or international relations and wound up bartending. Where does she fall on your meter.

What is the scale for Cum Laude at BU? 3.3? 3.5? 3.7?

Well, since the chick just got a govmint job on the Financial Services Committee, I'd have to say pretty good. As for the GPA thing, cum laude at Boston University is top 30% of the class or alternatively, 3.54 - 3.73.

Well since I started the latest round of bashing by pointing out that she has a degree in economics I will chime in again as very few posters here understand economics much less have a degree (with honors). Just pointing out that she has an actual education in the field unlike the armchair experts who criticize her.

Well, that an a 29 year old female freshman representative has the conservatives panties in twisted wads.  Good times. Oh, the worst part? She don't back down. Hey! It's something else she and Trump have in common. Man, I am on a roll now.  Of course one is on the way up while the other is backed into a corner with no way out.  So enjoy the music as you can sing it for either one.

The ironic thing is "conservatives" argue the marxist few of economics - that economics is the driving force behind the world.

Okay, now we have my rant.  There are many economies that work.  There is not only one way.  There are many societies and how those societies deal with the management of scarcity is their economics.  There is less scarcity in some societies than others.  Even within the US, we have societies such as the state of Louisiana that are terrible in their management and societies such as the very rich Hutterite communities that I am sure few of us would thrive in.  The important thing is that there is more than one way to a successful economy.  The Scandinavian countries and Canada have successful economies based on different societal values than the US.  China has a successful economy based on different societal values than the US.  There may be only one style of successful economy for the self-centered, value sucking, other people than my personal sphere don't count sort of person.  I keep on hearing the self centered think that the "symphony of self interest" comes about without any work or equity on their part.  One of the truisms of Adam Smith was that business was only to be conducted by gentlemen.  The concept of behaviour of a gentleman was well defined at that time.  Now it seems to have degenerated into the attitude of the "my handshake is my word" sort of business transaction.  Last time I truly got taken for a ride was by a born-again Christian.  His fines did not matter to him.  After a time of prayer and contemplation, he asked forgiveness from his congregation, not his victims, which was of course gladly given and all was right again.  He has apparently done this several times.

Exasperated

Quote

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is already making enemies in the House Democratic Caucus — and some of its members are mounting an operation to bring the anti-establishment, democratic socialist with 2.2 million Twitter followers into the fold.

The effort, described by nearly 20 lawmakers and aides, is part carrot, part stick: Some lawmakers with ties to Ocasio-Cortez are hoping to coax her into using her star power to unite Democrats and turn her fire on Republicans. Others simultaneously warn Ocasio-Cortez is destined for a lonely, ineffectual career in Congress if she continues to treat her own party as the enemy.

“I’m sure Ms. Cortez means well, but there’s almost an outstanding rule: Don’t attack your own people,” said Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.). “We just don’t need sniping in our Democratic Caucus.”

We may not have a lot of common ground when it comes to policy, but I love that she took on a "can't lose" establishment candidate and won and is now exasperating the establishment by saying bad things about the Team.

My god, you are a thick one aren't you? Millennials play computer games dipshit. All the fucking time. Common phrases, memes, and other cultural touchstones (such as sayings) come from that too. You even chose a source that said exactly (word for italicised word) what I said. You just don't know when you've fucked up and should bow out.

Which do you think makes more sense - a progressive saying they're going to gang-bang their own agenda or a progressive saying they're going to go to work together on their agenda (to which there is competition)? Try, if you can, to put your sick fantasies about Pelosi out of your head and use common sense. If you have any.

The root of the phrase is still a gang bang.  The fact that someone uses it in a non-sexual content doesn't change that.

Kinda like saying "You fuckin' with me?"  It's just crude.

Not sure; The last few years I taught the language was changing so fast I couldn't keep up. I would use a phrase I though was current and the kids would tell me it didn't mean what I intended and not to use it anymore. Usually accompanied by laughter.

Circulating fake nude photos of her is pretty crude, too, don't you think?

The quote's from her comment on that, specifically.

I was surprised and I was annoyed because it was a new tack. They’ve been for a very long time focusing on taking quotes out of context or manipulating them or making it seem as though I said things that I didn’t say. This was different in that it was an outright fraudulent thing. You can tell that they’re getting into hysterics because now you’re getting into my actual body, which is definitely crossing a level, definitely crossing a line.

I also think it’s encouraging because this is my sixth day in Congress and they’re out of all their artillery. The nude is supposed to be like the bazooka. You know, like, “We’re going to take her down.” Dude, you’re all out of bullets, you’re all out of bombs, you’re all out of all this stuff. What have you got left? I’m six days into the term, and you already used all your ammo. So enjoy being exhausted for the next two years while we run train on the progressive agenda.

Kinda like saying "You fuckin' with me?"  It's just crude.

Crude, yes. No debate about that. Still not saying what the right-wing pearl clutchers are trying to project on AOC.

Unless you're going to claim Doctor Who works for AOC and went back in time to post this, it would seem this slang definition makes more sense than your weird fantasies.

I used that exact phrasing to describe what the fleet did to us when we over stood the second mark at BIRW in the 2nd to the last race of the week and took ourselves out of contention for a money spot after smoking everyone to the first mark. In 2005.

But I'm pretty sure you could also construe that as every other boat "had their way with us" too.

Or PTSD. We were WAY ahead at the first mark and BAM! First to last and out of the running in one bad layline call1.

1 Which I did not make. I was too busy driving brilliantly in difficult conditions.

Circulating fake nude photos of her is pretty crude, too, don't you think?

Yeah.  So what.

Not sure; The last few years I taught the language was changing so fast I couldn't keep up. I would use a phrase I though was current and the kids would tell me it didn't mean what I intended and not to use it anymore. Usually accompanied by laughter.

Yep, and as an old guy you should recognize that those common phrases have a link to the past usage to grow from.

Not always, a couple of phrases come to mind that have absolutely no connection to the previous meaning. Hence the laughter.

It's a pretty round looking Venn diagram, I suspect.

Though some may be Bernie Bros.

Or, to more directly answer your question:  Voting Americans.

A new poll from The Hill and Harris X found that 59 percent of registered voters supported imposing a 70 percent tax rate on every dollar over the 10 millionth a person earns in a year. (Tax rates that apply only to income over a certain threshold are called marginal tax rates.) The idea even received bipartisan support: 71 percent of Democrats, 60 percent of independents and 45 percent of Republicans said they were in favor. In contrast, the Republican overhaul of the tax law that President Trump signed in 2017 — which decreased the marginal tax rate from 39.6 percent to 37 percent on married couples earning over $600,000 — has far less public support. A September Gallup poll found that only 39 percent of Americans approved of it.

I have been away for five weeks and come back to find more than 1500 posts on this topic. It boggles the mind. Here we have a rookie critter who is very good at getting publicity for herself and the right wingers have gone nuts.is it that they are threatened by someone under 30 (and a minority) who has the limited amount of real power she has? I thought that all the political shrinks would be kept employed for the next generation figuring out Trump. Turns out a lot of them can spend their time analyzing why these folks are so threatened by anyone who is not an older, white male.

She makes heads explode.  A year or two ago that was considered presidential.
