Protest was found invalid (RC couldn't protest based on a third party report, apparently), so WOXI keeps her nut dish, but does anyone know what the original cause of the protest was?

Edit: Never mind - apparently a failure to maintain AIS reporting was alleged. If they wanted to protest, Black Jack should have done so, instead of reporting to the RC, which may not protest due to a report from an interested party.

A similar situation happened to the Exxon Valdez.  The 3rd Mate called the Captain and said he was starting

the turn back into the shipping lanes but the signal never got to the rudder.  I wonder if their signal was hacked?

Actually, it was pretty stellar for Comanche to lead virtually the entire way in the ocean. It was a fairly light down wind race, not their design strong point. They lost the race when they got caught in a light spot turning the corner, was basically sitting there  for half an hour. It’s no real special accomplishment for oats to beat them in the light inshore portion of the finish, it’s what should happen given the designs of the two boats.

Well it sort of is since that portion is still a part of the race.  VOXI is pretty specialized towards that (and only that) race

Now for the fuck-up of sailing the whole race with their AIS transmitter off - they should lodge a protest against themselves and let the PC sort out a reasonable number of boots to the nuts

It is highly ironic that after that comment, he quotes Elvstrom as his signature:

'"Winning is no victory if, in doing so, you lose the respect of your competitors"....Elvstrom'

Some peoples have some trouble with the irony gland...  (For the not electronic inclined: AIS means Asshole Interrups Signal) Its usually interfaced with the  FHA (For His Advantage)

How appropriate under the circumstances, for someone to quote the most well-respected racing sailor, and if more people knew of him, likely the most well-respected sportsman of all time.  In this modern age, professionalism in yacht racing has made the stakes so high that Elvstrom would have likely loudly repeated the saying (if he did not coin the phrase) “if you are paid to play, then it is no longer a sport”.  Perhaps this saying helps explain the protest committee’s decision.  While the vocal minority of professional yacht racers would rally to dispute the assertion, the truth of the saying is undeniable.  However, the proliferation of Corinthian classes in regatta’s large and small, the discussions at PHRF boards pertaining to the banning of all sailing professionals from driving any boat in a PHRF race, even the boats that have been purchased by neophytes, with the professional’s name simply placed on the title to get around the rule.  Perhaps this is indicative of the majority of racing sailors becoming fed up with the current state of affairs to the degree that real change is coming, and the principals of sportsmanship so humbly followed by Paul Elvstrom all his life, is becoming more prevalent once again.

On another note; how refreshing it has been to read articles from the home page of SA that are well written, researched, reasonably unbiased and interesting.  “Anarchist David” (whether a SA employee or a guest) should be commended.  Perhaps SA’s ownership has recognized how much money and aggravation, arrogance and political agendas have cost Mark Zuckerberg and decided that personal vendettas and political diatribes editorialized on the SA home page result in fewer people responding to SA’s click bait (dare to dream).

Cheating, and enforcement of the rules has nothing to do with professionalism.

On the other hand writing rules, and enforcing them are two separate functions of oversight.

Some thought as to how rules can be monitored, and enforced, should be part of writing rules.

If a rule is written that cannot be properly monitored, or enforced, it puts the SIs in jeopardy of not being taken as a serious document.

That seems to be the case in S/H18.

Disregard for the rules speaks for itself. Pity that Bob Oatley’s legacy will be tarnished thus.

Yes, but we were talking line honors, not IRC/ORC etc...

Non-compliance with SIs, which I presume was 100% deliberate, taints their victory.

Comanche went through a pretty significant refit after being sold. That refit included replacing the grinder powered winches with hydraulic powered winches.

Please review the results: the winning boat was Alive. Neither Wild Oats XI nor Comanche were even in the top ten!

Isn't this their 3rd time in question about fol, lowing rules?

Uncalled for with boat loaded with pros. The owner gets the bad press.

So both WOXI and Comanche have powered winches for sail controls?  When did that become legal?

HHMMMMM, I wonder what they did before AIS?

OH, they probably reported in every so often and before that, they just fucking raced. Technology will fuck us all.

IIRC, back in the day WO didn't do so great at following the "report in every so often" thing, either.

About 7 Brisbane to Keppels and about the same Sydney to Southports as well as a few Hamilton island race weeks. But her greatest achievement is making Randumb and the other haters heads explode.

I was watching the excellent series from STARZ called 'Outlander' last night and an old Scottish expression they used made me think of this thread and some of the more vociferous posters.
