When I was 12 years old my neighbor gave me an old record player. W e were sitting around in our living room chatting with the neighbor couple. Someone noted that the record player only played 78 rpm records. Darn! Then I remembered that I had one 78 rpm record and I blurted out, "I have a 78!" Everyone urged me to go and get it. Then I remembered what the record was. It was titled THE WOOFING POST. I tried as hard as I could to avoid bringing the record out but they insisted. Oh boy, I knew I was going to get an ass kicking if they played it. It was the International Farting Contest where the contestants would hang onto this post to brace for their farts, the Woofing Post.

There was a referee and some judges. Each style of fart had a specific name and they were rated after each fart. I slunk off to my bedroom to wait for my punishment. The record started and my folks and their friends started laughing.

I did not get my ass kicked.

I think I heard of this. Was that the one where Lord Boomer gets disqualified for shitting his pants?

I suppose a DQ beats a DNF (Did Not Fart).

This is not the 'next ' conflict.  This one has been going on for years now.  Ever since davidprobable joined up with his Thurston Howell the III persona and started shitting on everything.  It came to a head once he put a bounty on sloop. After that he has changed his name maybe 15 times, keeping the attitude.

Sure, Brent had something to offer. Cheap sketches of a few boats that sort of worked.

Unfortunately he also pushed utter bullshit by the truckload, lied through his teeth and made personal attacks on everyone who disagreed with him. Add this to the fact that he was utterly uneducatable  and persisted in spewing rubbish despite engineering data to the contrary and I don't miss him at all.

Well, except for the entertainment factor of watching his meltdowns, but that got old. Good riddance.

Brent's ethos of self-sufficiency is to be admired to a certain extent. However, some people are self sufficient within the context of society to minimize their burden on it and as protection should it start to break down. Others are self-sufficient because they cannot or will not be a contributing member of society. Worst are those in the latter camp who espouse self-sufficiency while sucking at the societal tit.

I can tolerate an asshole if he's got something to offer. I can ignore a hypocrite who has nothing to offer. An asshole hypocrite is a bridge too far.

Brent might have had something to offer 30 or 40 years ago when people were building their own boats - a niche in that big world.

But that was then and this is now. His philosophy was long out of date in a world of dirt cheap used boats.

That was probably why he got so cranky and nasty - he was trying to convince people that something that had an application in the 70's & 80's was still valid.

Then he finally started resorting to outright lies to try and support his arguments.

Brent Swain boats are for the people who want to believe the promise that they can have a great, totally safe, totally comfortable, yacht for pennies and not much work. He's the steelboat counterpart of those guys trying to say you can build a ferrocement boat using chicken wire and a pile of dirt for a mold.

Of course, it is possible, but the most likely result is rough as a cob and still no more safe or comfortable than the level of skill provides.

GIGO applies to boats as much as anything else, it's just not a popular message with a segment of the home-builder market.

That's where the whole schtick fell apart - sure you can pull a folded metal shell together in short order, if you're happy with the resulting shape. After that, the time, cost & aggravation is the same as with any other hull. It's a hell of a lot more complex building a boat than building a house.

Brent never built more than maybe 2 boats, ever. I think he actually only built one, counting a build as starting with a pile of steel and ending with something that floats, motors, sails and has full services. He tacked together a number of hulls and called it good, leaving the sucker to finish the job.

Personally I'd like to have a crack at beating Wynand's record of completely welding together a 34' Van Der Stadt type hull in 17 days now I've some idea of what I'm doing. But life is short and I'd rather play with the new toy than build again just because I can (yet anyway). I'm pretty sure the neighbours would fund my staying away, too.....

The biggest tragedy with BS is that he manages to convince some suckers that his boats are the only way to home build a steel boat on a budget, while for the same effort you can actually purchase plans that are decently thought out and end up with a boat that doesn't end up as an eyesore

Yes, I think that Origami is an interesting concept, somebody talented enough could probably make it work for small plywood boats. It requires a lot of imagination to do it right. I am a big fan of Harlé for instance because he was really good at designing chines boats that were outperforming the boats with compound hulls.

Keep it going Beer - you're getting several uppers every time the Pathetic One gives you a downer.
