France June 19th......anything happening?

Recommended Posts

I am going to be in France w/ family this summer. Hate to be so close to Les Sables and La Havre etc and not make a run to the coast to see these places.

Unfortunately looks like things will be quiet while we are there.

Family wants to go to a soccer game 6/19 in Paris.

Any suggestions on where I should visit that day?

(Probably not going to be able to fly to Mallorca for the Super Yacht regatta....)

Anyone care to take a Yank sailing?

Isn't soccer all over for the season in mid June?

Musée de la Marine in Paris is easy to get to (Place Trocadero) and took me about a full day to visit. Incredible ship models and paintings.  LeHavre is a shipping port - it would be like going to Port Elizabeth, NJ.   LaRochelle or Les Sables d'Olonne are a good distance from Paris, and though the TGV might make it possible, getting there & back (about 3hours each way) would probably take too long.  A port city with sailing closer to Paris would be Deauville.  You are too late for the Gulf of Morbihan Week - a gathering of more than a thousand traditional sailboats in southern Brittany from 27may to 02jun (www.semainedugolfe.com)  Sailing midweek is not likely to have much going on unless you can check with specific clubs near Paris itself.  If you can, do take the family to see Caen and the D-Day beaches, and particularly the American Cemetery in Colleville sur Mer. There is a lot to see in France besides "le foot". (Though "le foot" is good, too.)

Hadn't thought of Normandy....THANKS for that great reminder. Appreciate all the other info as well. We are taking a ridiculous American vacation and trying to see 3 countries in 3 weeks....an insult to each one. between the "Hogwarts Train" in Scotland and Le Foot I am going to need to fit in some sailing....or a Scotch Distillery!

Musée de la Marine was an excellent idea, but it is closed for many months for a total reshuffling and re-decorating. FWIW

that can be combined,  lots of the distileries are close to or just next to the sea

There will be beer can racing in St Malo that evening. "Les Vespérales" doesn't show in the SNBSM program, but runs every Wednesday in season. The Régate des Zebres the next weekend, above the Rance dam, is epic.

Checked.  Paris museum won't re-open until 2021.  Other branches in Brest, Toulon, Port St. Louis are open, but are a long way from Paris and don't offer the same magnitude of experience.

soccer game june 19th in Paris is going to be Scotland vs Argentina, in the WOMEN'S world cup.

just sayin'

that being said, if you have nothing to lose and want to drool over some serious offshore racing boat porn, Lorient is a mere 3 hour train ride away. Then you hitch a ride to La Trinité sur mer for some equally qualitative yet les quantitative porn, then taxi to Auray and back on a train to Paris.

Yup.....Woman's Worlds Cup.....my wife and son are stoked.....me?, looking to head for the coast. Lorient sounds like it might be just the ticket!
