FOILSZ

Recommended Posts

The Laser's righting moment and rig drag doesn't seem to suit foiling. The amount of mainsheet and course changes you can see in the vid are an indication. Successful foilers like the Moth have intrinsically lower rig drag and higher righting moment.

The AMAC price looks almost identical to the Glide Free price. And since Laser sailors are almost by definition not actually interested in pure speed, it will be interesting to see how many are sold.

Wonder how this compares to the UFO - seems like $4kAUD plus a good laser is pretty close to the ~$8k price of a boat that's actually designed for foiling from the ground up.

Yep, foils are expensive! It almost ALWAYS wins to go for a boat designed for foiling from the beginning, as opposed to retrofitting a platform that isn't really suited at all for the reasons listed above, plus its not like Lasers are all that stiff to begin with and foiling generally demands a stiff platform to hold the boards in place. I agree the UFO makes much more sense (selling well too) as does buying a used Moth or maybe getting a Waszp. I suspect this is a business ploy to reuse much of the existing Waszp infrastructure/tooling and sell more foils...

Curious how the air-sensing wand works...

Is it something that ties in with not needing a clew strap?
