New J80 Jib @ NOODs

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any info on the new J80 jib that John White was sailing with at the NOODs?  What are the materials and advantages over standard paneled sail or 3DI (which appears to be more expensive than this one).   Is it the BTY-15 Jib?  It looks like, from this pic, there are three different materials.  If you look at the top of the photo the first two vertical panels (luff) are obviously different, but then the middle two look darker than the back two (leech).  Given this is not an overlapping sail, curious what the design intent is.

We had the new jib. I believe John had this one last year, or at least an incarnation of the same thing. It was a paneled jib he had last year.

North have 3 J80 jibs

APi 2 is the latest jib, in 3Di aramid polyester

APi 1 was the first 3Di jib which came out last year and is all polyester

BTY 15 (jib in photo) is a Aramid Polyester pannelled jib and has been out for a few years

Each sail has its niche, with the BTY 15 having very good shape holding but as it is pannelled it is slightly cheaper than the 3Di sails. It has different weight cloths to account for different loads. Stronger cloth in the leech where the load is biggest and lighter cloth in the tack area where the loads are smallest.

We raced last year with the APi 1 and found ourselves very quick all round, but especially when the breeze built and the 3Di sails held their shape so well while the lamianate sails started to deform.

USA #1592 has the new 3DI API 1 and it looks great. Easy to trim and handles the wind ranges quite well.
