Keysrock35 46 #1 Posted July 10, 2019 Since no one else has posted... figured I would... This will be my old man's 49th, my 19th, my sister's 20th, and the boat's 38th (supported by a loyal crew of our closest friends, of course). What say you? Will there be too much or too little wind? Seems there is little/no drama with race management this year, which is nice.

Carrera 32 #4 Posted July 10, 2019 But seriously though, with the cold water temps, if we get any good air and land temps there will definitely be opportunities for thermals. This is showing up in the ChiMac forecasts at the moment, with light air predicted for the first day or so and boats having to decide on whether they stick with the western shore or try to make it across to Michigan. Fisher 36 #7 Posted July 11, 2019 8 hours ago, Varan said: Does the Brass Rail still exist? Do tell... Lake temps aren’t that cold across most of Huron but the for core of the Manitoulan Basin. Still, we could see some decent air mass to water temp differentials. Fog. Generally, I figure conditions hinge on the timing of short waves riding north of high pressure to the south of the race course.

TripleZeros 48 #29 Posted July 20, 2019 Storm just rolled over the course, boats pointed everywhere. Hope all are fine. It's not a Mac race without a storm.

S291sailor 3 #31 Posted July 22, 2019 If a local West Michigan TV station is to be believed, this year's PH-Mac apparently included a Laser fleet. Humbly submitted here as this week's CAPTION CONTEST:

Fisher 36 #38 Posted July 23, 2019 Breeze wasn’t a problem in this edition. The line of storms that came through on Saturday took the breeze to 35 knots for about 20 minute then to zero. Heavy rain and lighting but no hail for us. We went backwards at 0.25 knots into a circle due to the residual sea state and windless aftermath. Took about 30 mins before the breeze settled back in. Pretty standard Great Lakes summer front...for those that were prepared, it was drama free. For those that weren’t, it was probably a sh*t show. Rafted up near a Swede 41. You guys would like it. Low freeboard is an understatement. Talked to the crew and sounds like the Shore Course got the worst of the 20 knot W-NW winds on Sunday while beating up the lee shore Between Thunder Bay to Rodgers City. We were damn happy to hug the Canadian shore and get out of the worst of the cold Lake Huron 6-12 ft waves while sailing the Cove Island course. Writing this from my bunk under soft rain in the inner harbor. Yesterday’s weather left nothing wanting. So good up here. Off to the Chuck Wagon soon:)

More Cowbell2 223 #40 Posted July 24, 2019 5 boats penalized for not having MOB cert done. This is basic safety at sea stuff. How lazy can you be? And that's only the sample of the boats that were inspected.
Blizzard 9 #41 Posted July 24, 2019 Perhaps the best sunrise ever on Monday morning, while passing Bois Blanc island. Class C was super competitive, neck and neck to the end. Fun race, despite the heavy-air beat to the finish.
Mr. Squirrel 88 #42 Posted July 25, 2019 Clearly a big boat race on the Cove Island course. GL70s took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall. We never saw more than 28 knots of breeze during the storm, but we were the Northern-most boat when the storm hit. We never got the 0 knot hole that so many saw either. After about 30 minutes we shook the reef and eventually set the A1.5, and then the A2 and kept trucking straight at Cove. Nice sunset in the Straights on Sunday night too. coyotepup 24 #43 Posted July 26, 2019 Credit to the weather forecasters for nailing the direction of the breeze from Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon. Huge demerits for being about 200% off on velocity. "Get a weather radio and find out how long this shit is going to last" says our skipper. OK. Answer: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ According to weather radio, current observations claimed to be 12-14 knots. Hey, what does the instrument say? "Uh, 28." Weather radio is hereby fired from duties in predictive capacity. Fortunately, nothing broken and no injuries, although the same can't be said about every boat on the shore course. Sometimes during a rough Mac race, on either lake, when I'm on the rail looking out at the waves I think to myself "This would be bitchin in a Laser" Right up until I consider that I'd be alone and would probably have to be in a survival suit while I did it.
