what is it?

No seriously. It's the nonfoiling version of The Foiling Dinghy from Thilio Keller in Germany. So I'm assuming it's called The Dinghy.

This is more than 50% more expensive than a UFO with what seem like similar performance and limitations. What about this makes it more desirable than a UFO? Serious question as I would really like a manageable foiling dinghy.

I don't in any way want to be snide, rude or arrogant, but I'm pretty sure the UFO beats it around a course pretty handily. I look forward to being proven wrong.

Challenge accepted! We already had a go in Quiberon, France, where we the UFO and TFD spent a few days on the water. Our customers were foiling right the way. The best about The Foiling Dinghy is that you can always sail it and you don‘t have to heel it windward to foil. You can also use it as a very performant dinghy when there is not enough wind to foil. In the non-foiling mode it’s so much faster than a Laser. The UFO seems to have huge problems sailing upwind.

Both boats have a very different concept. While the UFO is a fun platform to sail, The Foiling Dinghy is a proper high performance dinghy built in epoxy glass fibre sandwich, made in Germany. Our foils are made of carbon and glass fibre and not aluminium. Anyway, you can‘t really compare both products. One thing we all know for sure is that the UFO and TFD are both excellent ambassadors for foiling.

PS: This is a video from Quiberon:
