The constitution has no provision for an "acting" appointment, and the Presidential Succession Act seems quite clear on what happens if there is no president or VP.

It's a Nomination, not an Appointment, and " the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress."

So the VP does not take office until after the vote.

If Trump went on TV tomorrow and said Ivanka was now the VP, who would stop him? McConnel? Barr? His Staff? The military?

If Trump announces that he is cancelling the 2020 election, and conveys such orders to the state officials concerned, who would stop him?

It's pretty clear that the Constitution has less impact on this crowd than a bird fart

The SCOTUS could rule he was in violation of the Constitution and it would have no effect. The only way to remove a sitting president is through impeachment (yeah, forget the 25th). He's already been impeached and while Mitch McConnell is majority leader, you bet your ass he'll do everything possible to keep the gravy train 'a rollin'. McConnell is a flat out traitor.

The only thing that keeps a democracy running is that everyone basically agrees to follow the law. That's gone. Trump doesn't give a shit about the law since he is clearly above it. Welcome to The United States of Third World America. Good times.

If not re-elected Trump's reign ends on Jan 21, 2021 and if there is not an incoming candidate the office goes to the speaker of the house. Period. No wiggle room. SS would drag his ass out and throw his gold plated shit on the front lawn if need be.  The GOP will never allow that to happen so there will be voting on Nov.3 come hell, high water or the 2nd wave.  The thought of Pelosi being sworn in and all those heads finally exploding would be priceless and ironic since it's not the heads they have been counting on.

And FWIW every member of the military has taken a solemn oath to protect the Constitution not the POTUS.  This ain't 1933 Germany.

There's a reason Trump tries to extract loyalty pledges from people even when he shouldn't.

Details are different from state to state, but I think (not sure) that every state has a Board of Elections which is supervised by the Secretary of State. So it would be up to who wants to obey Trump and who doesn't... I think a lot would, possibly a majority. The Trumpublican Senate would certainly back him. But you're right that it's the individual counties who run the nuts & bolts of the election.

Zackly. If the Senate, and the Supreme Court all stay pat, I can't see the military removing Trump.

From the news today, it sounds like Chief Justice Roberts is going to decide that Trump has the Constitutional right to keep any secret he wants. They're not playing according to Hoyle any more.

But what's so shocking is the number of "freedom fighters" willingly handing over their free will to the future dictators.  It's like the carnival barkers suckering passers-by who believe they will be the one who wins big.

Been hearing the same

‘it’s not possible’

‘checks and balances’

’but, the constitution’

I’ll believe him leaving the White House when I see it, until then, I wouldn’t have too many other plans. He’s run complete circles around the system and the country, breaking laws everywhere he goes.....at this rate, he’ll win the election anyway.

Now Jared attempts to explain (walk back) his earlier comments on the election  https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/13/politics/jared-kushner-november-election/index.html

The key point I was trying to make earlier

Neither the President nor his staff can postpone the election, even in an emergency, according to a 2004 report from the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. That power rests with Congress, which can pass a statute changing the date of the election, but cannot cancel it altogether. The Constitution also gives states wide latitude to regulate elections within their own borders.

And finally:

The Constitution doesn't specify when elections should be held. But it does dictate that Trump's current term expires on January 20, 2021, regardless of whether an election is held this November.

News Flash: Donald J. Trump doesn't give a skinny rat's ass what the Constitution says. Neither does Mitch McConnell. I suspect that at least a large minority of the Supremes don't, either.

The question is- supposing the DON'T cancel the election, is that because they've got the books cooked on it? Is it because they have surreptitiously tried to stop it, and decided they can't?

If they DO give orders to cancel the election, who will listen and who won't? They found CBP/HSS people to run concentration camps for them. Trump is dumb as a fucking post but not all of them are, and all of them -want- to bring about a fascist oligarchy with them on the inside getting all the pie. I'd be willing to bet a LOT that there has already been a whispering campaign to find sympathetic allies in the state machinery to either cook the election or stop it.

There really isn't anybody to stop them, except people committed to doing right.

Elections are held by individual states so in theory the really red ones could but then the blue ones would swamp the election. There are a number of things to worry about this just isn't one of them. What is a worry? What will Trump and Mitch do from Nov to Jan. 20.  Reality show time.

Meanwhile, we have the upcoming releases of Trump's taxes and financials or shenanigans obstructing them - either of which isn't going to help Trump and then the release of Michael Cohen's book - he has a lot to say and a short time to say it. That is going to make for some fun reading and gnashing of teeth and base wailing.

We don’t actually need an election. The states need to send (Zoom?) electors you the electoral college. I wouldn’t put it past several key states to ignore the popular result or even state they can’t rely on the popular result, and commit their electors to Trump even if he looks like he lost the state.

Based on oral arguments the SCOTUS has a dim view on the notion of “faithless” electoral voters.  A rare bit of non fuckery from them.

If I was advising her, I'd recommend she lay on more of a screechy voice and fake a heavy Chinese accent. Start every question with asking if he's been tested today, in view of the Covid outbreak in the White House.

Making him storm off in a huff is good, making him yell for the security guys to throw her out is better, making him lunge at her while screaming "You Chinese cunt!" would be excellent.

Anything that hastens the day he gets put in a padded cell on strong tranquillizers is for the common good.

You are doing the same thing Trump does (sorry about that). She is not a Chinese reporter, she is an American reporter who happens to be of Chinese ancestry.

When you test, you find something is wrong with people. If we didn’t do any testing, we wouldn’t have very few cases. They don’t want to write that, it’s common sense

Not sure what to say about this

And they’re running into death, just like soldiers, running to bullets in a true sense. I see that with the doctors and the nurses and so many of the people that go into those hospitals, it’s incredible to see, it’s a beautiful thing to see.

Heard a bit of Trump today talking about Project Warpspeed or whatever it is called. I thought he was going to call William Shatner on stage but I guess Captain Kirk wanted to much for an appearance fee. Trump was reading from a paper script rather than a teleprompter. It was painful to watch. Any time he came to a word with more than two syllables he would stop and you could see him trying to figure out the pronunciation. Whenever he is to do a scripted talk it looks like his handlers have sedated him.

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump announced Friday that his administration is issuing guidance deeming places of worship "essential" during the coronavirus pandemic, calling on governors to reopen religious institutions for services.

Trump threatened to "override" governors if their states did not follow the new federal recommendations, but it was unclear what authority the President was referring to. The recommendations are voluntary.

I think that might be part of the problem though.  With the instant access, people seem to forget what the heck happened "last week".  The shear magnitude of the shit that has spewed out of Trump's mouth over the last several years seems to be lost with his latest "tweet" catching everyone's attention for this second.  Trump is definitely using it effectively.

Maybe. You get both, and there are a lot of people running longer term story and event tracking.

Nothing breaks here in PA, for sure. And no one really gets any information that may sway them, pretty much ever it seems. With Twitter, you can reach thousands and hear from same. Whether that informs people, leads to discussions, or educates? I'd say I've learned a heck of a lot more useful and good stuff from other people on Twitter, though I've also see a buttload of crazy/stupid.

I think you have it. Trump has done/said probably a thousand things that would have gotten any other president in big trouble. The apparent secret is to pile BS on absurdity on  stupidity at such a rate that no one can keep up. Each 'even'' acts as a diversion from the proper analysis of the previous ones.

Study: Many of Nation’s Problems Could Be Solved by Having a President (The Borowitz Report)—A controversial new study suggests that the United States of America could benefit from having a President.

The study has raised eyebrows by claiming that a President could be helpful in unifying a country and, in a best-case scenario, providing moral leadership.

“At a time of crisis, a President could be a galvanizing figure who leads a country to a better future,” the study theorizes. “He or she could bring a nation together rather than tear it apart.”

In one of the study’s most radical proposals, it argues that a so-called Justice Department could include an Attorney General appointed by the President to uphold the rule of law.

“Additionally, a President, by scrupulously obeying the law himself, could set an example for the rest of the country,” the study claims. “As improbable as it might seem, citizens would look to the President as someone to admire and emulate in their daily lives.”

He's been the butt of jokes here for a very long time.  From the second rate NY developer who wanted to be accepted by real developers, to the guy who couldn't make money on a casino, to the egomaniac with gold toilets, to the braggart with that big yacht who went bankrupt and had to sell it, to the clown prince who stumbled into the presidency.  He was successful at the one thing he didn't want to be successful at - getting elected president.  Had he been born into poverty, he would have become a pimp.

Are you writing his official biography or an unauthorized version?  I really want to hear what the kids say.

I don't think many of us will ever desire to think or speak about these times.

My son worries about my granddaughter and his wife.  It grows algebraically from there.

I am very afraid about the backlash from these riots.  Powerless people are powerless.  The moneyed interests will make it clear.

I think he's going to find that Russian tactics might not work as well here.

We need to hear from R reps and get THEM on record.

, Trump vowed harsher action against protesters. The president made no mention of violent actions taken by police in recent days against protesters, nor did he make any call for national unity. Instead, he said he would mobilize “all available federal resources, civilian and military, to stop the rioting and looting, to end the destruction and arson, and to protect the rights of law-abiding Americans, including your Second Amendment rights.” (That was a call to arms from the neo-nazi's if I ever heard one)

He specifically called on governors across the country to deploy the National Guard and vowed to deploy the U.S. military if states refused to comply.

Funny he's doing the dirty work for China, Russia, Iran ..............Bet their all planning what parts of the USA they going to get.

This should be a fun shit show to watch,
