Shed a Tear for The Billionaires

Recommended Posts

Dick Branson, worth 4.7 billion pounds has asked the UK govt for a handout of 500m to keep his empire afloat. I was in tears, despite not paying any tax whatosever for the last 14 years he still has to mortgage his island. Times are tough when a man has to mortgage his island

Branson, yeah right..... hes a regular guy

From the same article

“Richard Branson’s letter failed to convince us that suing the NHS wasn’t bad for the health service, moving his money to a tax haven wasn’t to avoid tax, or that emitting millions of tonnes of pollution wasn’t bad for the environment. There are still no justified grounds to give Virgin an unconditional bailout. Public money should be used for public goods.”

I'm not sure "love" would be the best descriptor for most folks' feelings about their employment.

Too big to fail eh?

Capitalism has a mechanism that cleans out bad players, they go bust then a phoenix rises from the ashes. These days socialism for the rich has skewed it so much that deadwood can thrive despite itself. Billionaires begging on behalf of their employees.... pathetic

An employee's feelings about an employer comes from how much of the profits an employee creates ends up on their check.  Unfortunately, most employers today are proud of their ability to keep that percentage as low as possible.

They should put those up on the news, I’m sure the public will feel really sorry for him.

"Sometimes we’ll go off island for the rest of the day. About 18 miles away there’s a lovely island called Anagarda and we kitesurf over there. I learnt to kitesurf about eight years ago when the sport was still slightly hairy because they hadn’t designed kites that were easy to control. Once, a delightful photographer turned up on the island with an even more delightful girlfriend and asked if I would take her kitesurfing on my back. I said I would, and then he asked if I minded if she didn’t have any clothes on. Silly question.

His PR bill must be huge to make working stiffs think a billionaire is just like them except with billions, generally speaking behind every great fortune there is a pile of bodies somewhere.

Hard work is for the working stiffs dumbarse :)

I have issues with Branson. We sailed past his island just as the sun was coming up. Seemed logical that he would invite us in for breakfast but not a chance. If he is going to behave like that why should I defend him now.

The love employees feel for their employer is usually a mirror of the love coming the other way.

Virgin Airlines are asking for a massive hand-out here. The government should, IMO, not give them a red cent, but should "buy" a share of the company so that the taxpayers actually get something in return....

Yes but we won't get anything. Cheaper regional airfares, highly unlikely. After paying eye watering prices for regional airfares over the years I have no problem seeing these guys and QANTAS burn.

Same with AirNZ over here. Anyone start up and get flights going into the provinces, AirNZ will move in, undercut until you are broke, the jack prices until there are no customers. Bunch of predatory retards, should have our country name removed.

Forbes magazine article:

Quote

There is something disconcerting when the USA, the U.K. and Australia are asked by billionaires to bail out their businesses. In capitalist societies, companies fail. It sounds cold, but that’s what happens. When you start a business, you hope for great success, but the data shows that the vast majority of companies fail. Somehow in Western countries, we’re all capitalists when things are going well. Then, things go awry and business leaders turn to corporate socialism....

Branson has cultivated the public facade of being a very likeable and charismatic person. That’s not enough to hand over billions of dollars to an incredibly wealthy person who literally lives, jet skis and kite surfs on his own private island. Why should the U.K. and Australian governments serve as a piggy bank for when things go bad?

As this second article points out, Virgin Arlantic has been loss-making for years and is hardly worthy of taxpayer financial support.

Exactly, I think Virgin Australia was in the hole for about $4.9 billion even before covid19 and then asks the Govt for a $1.9b bail-out. Perhaps they should try the bank.

Richard Branson's Virgin Group only owns 10% of Virgin Airlines. Etihad Airlines owns 21%, Singapore Airlines owns 20%.... why the fuck would the Australian Taxpayer hand over billions of dollars to them and their reindeer, let alone Branson and his elk and not get something (a share of the shit-pie, for example) in return?

I feel the same way regarding the recent bailout of the banking system.

Speaking of Sir Richard, his new cruise line for millennials, “Virgin Voyages“,  is going nowhere fast.

Quote

Despite the unfortunate timing ... Branson sees cruises as a growth area.

...

Branson told Reuters Scarlet Lady would be based in the United States and the Caribbean, meaning he did not expect it to be hit by any fallout from the coronavirus crisis. The virus originated in mainland China and has killed more than 2,000 people.

“Obviously what happened in Japan was horrendously unfortunate”, he said. “(But) I think the longer term impact will be negligible. I think the fact that we’re going out of America means that I don’t think we’ll suffer.”

Source: “Branson says new Virgin cruise line will overcome coronavirus fears”, February 20th.

While Branson deserves some slack (he was far from alone in underestimating the rapid spread of the virus), for a purported international businessman he seems to be remarkably naïve. Did the facts that the USA has no universal health care, and is led by an incompetent, incurious mountebank, entirely escape him?

Virgin Australia owed more than $6.8bn to more than 12,000 creditors, including employees, banks, aircraft financiers and landlords, when its board decided to appoint administrators last Monday.

Documents filed with the federal court by the administrators, partners at accounting firm Deloitte, show they are also uncertain as to whether to continue leasing some of the grounded airline’s 144-strong fleet of planes.

On Friday morning, federal court judge John Middleton gave the administrators permission to hold a meeting of creditors next Thursday by videolink.

He also allowed the administrators an extra month to decide how to deal with its 94 different aircraft leases before they become personally liable for almost $2bn owed under the contracts.
