Any local opinion? Yeah, that's O'side at it's very worst... It's really not that bad, We had a problem with the dredging company a few years ago when they didn't remove enough sand infill. It created that left hand point break that went into the harbor. I surfed it before they dredged, then it was gone. With all the rain washing the San Luis-Rey river out (a good thing) and some big south swells the entry is now down to 6ft in places...

gcutter 29 #32 Posted May 19, 2020 In response to the comments about Oceanside, I have only a four words that work for all their "well-designed" harbors in California - Army Corps of Engineers. Gulp. My $0.02 US, Greg
axolotl 137 #33 Posted May 19, 2020 Yup, Oceanside can be hairy. The key (usually) is to come in from the West close aboard the south tip of the north jetty. You'll not get pushed into it, and you want to avoid being near the south jetty. The closest I've come to crashing in SoCal was the Mission Bay entrance. I saw the sand bottom of the channel near the breakwaters exposed during big westerly swells with Santa Anas and a low tide, barely able to avoid being pushed off course by the breakers even with the engine at warp speed. Because it faces almost due west, it is vulnerable much more to the effect of swells, winds, and currents than our “Big Bay” entrance, which is protected by Pt Loma. Before the Mission Bay channel was dredged and the south jetty extended in 2010, the mouth was extremely dangerous during storms, with waves breaking the entire width of the entrance. Several boats have sunk there, from surf kayaks to 35 ft fishing vessels.
