Maybe we should paint the damn thing some other color.

Tom Cotton Suggests Killing Rioters and Looters

June 1, 2020 at 12:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard273 Comments

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) on Fox News this morning: “If local politicians will not do their most basic job to protect our citizens, let’s see how these anarchists respond when the 101st Airborne is on the other side of the street.”

He later amplified his remarks: “And, if necessary, the 10th Mountain, 82nd Airborne, 1st Cav, 3rd Infantry — whatever it takes to restore order. No quarter for insurrectionists, anarchists, rioters, and looters.”

Historically, “no quarter” means that you kill people rather than arrest them. It’s a war crime.

US Army and US Air Force are specifically prohibited from enforcing domestic laws by the Posse Comitatas Act.

Coast Guard is a special case.

Although not specifically mentioned, it is presumed that the marines and Navy aren’t eligible for service on our streets, either.

Unless martial law, I suppose.

Yikes

This is untrue.  I had actually typed up the whole reasoning but just deleted it.

The president has the ability.  And - typical to what we are seeing with Trump, and the law is written in such a way that if he chooses, it will be a near impossible fight to stop him.

https://kmmsam.com/will-we-see-us-military-troops-on-american-soil/

Presidential Authority to Use US Military Forces
Here are the current conditions the president can use to deploy US Military Troops on American soil.

(1) The President may employ the armed forces, including the National Guard in Federal service, to--

(A) restore public order and enforce the laws of the United States when, as a result of a natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition in any State or possession of the United States, the President determines that--

(i) domestic violence has occurred to such an extent that the constituted authorities of the State or possession are incapable of maintaining public order; and

(ii) such violence results in a condition described in paragraph (2); or

(B) suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy if such insurrection, violation, combination, or conspiracy results in a condition described in paragraph (2).

(2) A condition described in this paragraph is a condition that--

(A) so hinders the execution of the laws of a State or possession, as applicable, and of the United States within that State or possession, that any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law, and the constituted authorities of that State or possession are unable, fail, or refuse to protect that right, privilege, or immunity, or to give that protection; or

(B) opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.

The funny thing is the Republican candidate for governor in 2018 is a current & former member of one of the local governments (Hennepin County) dog says is a leadership failure. Republicans didn't run a serious candidate for Minneapolis mayor.

Journalists are the enemy because they show the world what is going on. Means the cops can't clear the streets the way they want to.

BD....The problem with the first five words is that they do not apply here. There are in fact people on this board who have condoned the arson and looting. The problem you have with me is that I don't just not condone it , I condemn it. I condemn those who are destroying other people's lives and with the failed leadership under which it is happening.

Good morning bullshitter. Once again, you continue to generalize in an attempt to turn one or two posters into a group of them, and then create a straw based on that fallacious generalization.

You continue to harp on the words of one (or two?) posters as if they represent the majority of the board.  Or at least, you insinuate the left leaning posters of the board.  The problem with you strawman is that it is just that - a fake argument built on the posts of one or two people that you are attempting to beat everyone else over the head with.

You're slightly better at it than Bravo Bravo, but not by much.  The major difference being that he leans toward conspiracy sites, and you just hide behind fake arguments, a refusal to take an actual postion, and general bullshitting.  There are so many other real problems going on right now - the president's reaction to this event, his treatment of everyone including the elected governors of the states, his inability to see why you shouldn't endanger people's lives because you want to hold a bible for a photo-op.  And you're oddly silent on those issues, while you attempt to highlight what one or two idiots might (or might not) have said.

Bullshitters gonna bullshit - and you're the king of them all on this web site.

Spare me...You're one of the ones who can rationalize the distruction of communities.

Dog: Really...a small price to pay, just who do you think is going to pay the price? You think the rioting, burning and looting of other citizens property as an appropriate and justified response to the murder? You understand that it's their own communities that are being destroyed. That some businesses will relocate, others will fold. That the lives of the people in these communities will get worse, that they pay the price.

Grrr: And when you spend decades pursuing the peaceful route and the problems with the establishment still haven't been fixed?

I wish I was arrogant enough to wave my finger at them and proclaim 'naughty naughty' like you do.  But then again, perhaps I'm just nearer to the problem and I see the lack of movement over the past 30 years.

Nope.  As usual, you're trying to bullshit.  I absolutely do not support violent protests - but I understand why they are taking place.

See how you bullshit and try to twist things that are said?

Read the quote above about white privilige.  You won't learn anything, but at least you'll be silent for a couple minutes.

It's amazing, here in Michigan we had police marching WITH the protestors showing solidarity.  The result was no arrests and no violence in Flint, and now a marked reduction in the issues in Detroit.  It's amazing what happens when you tell people you hear them.  Rather than waving your arms like a demented idiot on adderall and threatening them with a decade of incarceration and actions by the military.

But you do you dog.  Reality, kindness, and rationality have never really intruded much on whatever planet you live on.  If this were revolutionary times, you'd be the good little British collaborator, arguing against change and violence because you just don't see the problems.

You don't support it but you can't condemn it. How feckless are you?

It doesn't take arrogance to condemn the destruction of innocent peoples lives, all it takes is a bit of decency.

Did you see what Trump did last night? Attacking innocent people, the church and it's priests? For that matter attacking the very American values he should be upholding? This is no small thing he did, and shows in no uncertain terms what he is capable of. All because he felt insulted at being called a coward. He had innocent people and priests in their own church tear gassed.

I saw them clear peaceful protesters with tear gas for a photo op. It was disgraceful . That's a good topic too.

Flash-bang grenades, too.  Oh, but you find it "disgraceful".  That's about all we'll hear from you about that.

Surprised you didn't just dismiss it as "lack of political finesses" and proclaim it "refreshing".

Now, get back to defending the man you claim you don't support.

You're right.  I don't condone riots and looting.

I do, however, understand (to the degree a middle-class, middle-aged, white man CAN understand) the anger and frustration POC feel regarding the systemic racism that continues to pervade society.  The fact that black men are killed by police at a staggering rate, and few officers ever face justice for their actions.  The fact that peaceful protests, like Colin K kneeling in an attempt to highlight police brutality were hijacked and twisted to be some form of traitorous behavior.

You choose to pretend that does not exist.  You think those people should shut up and suck it up.

Saying they were clearing protesters is language which in my opinion does not come close to reflecting what happened. Americans were violently attacked for doing nothing more than exercising their constitutional rights. Priests were violently attacked in their own church and driven away so that a violent and cowardly man could stand there holding up a book he knows nothing about. I no longer think that comparisons to Hitler are hyperbole. He sees absolutely nothing as sacred. He is evil incarnate.

I was wrong in thinking that we could weather him as simply another bad President, as we have before. I was wrong when I though our nation had largely moved past it's racism. I was wrong. I can only hope and pray that others who are in a position to stop him see they were wrong as well. Someone who would tear gas priests in their own church in order to prove they are not a coward is a very dangerous person, and not one who should ever be in a position to issue orders to our military.

Arlington County in Virginia, which borders Washington DC, has withdrawn all of the officers it sent to the capital due to Mr Trump's church photo opportunity.

Arlington County had sent officers to the District of Columbia to help with the protests, but all of those officers have now been withdrawn.

"The county is re-evaluating the agreements that allowed our officers to be put in a compromising position that endangered their health and safety, and that of the people around them, for a purpose not worthy of our mutual aid obligations," the statement from the county read.

Being passed around the socials...

-You keep saying "It's horrible that an innocent black man was killed, but destroying property has to stop."

Try saying "It's horrible that property is being destroyed, but killing innocent black men has to stop."-

I think this will go way over the heads of most elk but sums up my thoughts precisely.

Hey fruitcake.  I think you'll find that your cute little 8chan meme isn't the only thing they are protesting.  But I doubt you you really understand.  Nor do you appear to want to understand.  You seem rather gleeful and glib and a man was killed for no reason by the police.

But JUST in case, this isn't just about the people killed by police, or whites, or however you'd like to bin it.  It's about the systemic racism that creates these acts.  It's about the constant poverty in the inner cities.  The failing schools.  The lack of opportunity.

Don't worry.  We won't hold it against you.  We've come to expect it.  It's kind of what you do.

Oh - we saw your bow-and-arrow act during the demonstrations.  Inspiring.  Truly.

Yeah.  It seems that the Republicans have trouble getting themselves elected by populations in large cities.  Kind of like they lost the popular election for the country.  I wonder why.  Oh, and you missed a couple.  Like LA etc.

Hey fruitcake, It is nice to see that you are in lock-step with the right wing noise machine with the whole 'it's the democrats fault'.  But I'm confused.

How can Trump take credit for calling in the National Guard when it is the Governors' sole right to do so?

'Call in our great National Guard like they FINALLY did (thank you President Trump) last night in Minneapolis,' Trump demanded of the Pennsylvania governor.

While Trump remained out of sight, his advisers discussed the prospect of an Oval Office address in an attempt to ease tensions.

But the notion was quickly scrapped for lack of policy proposals and the president's own seeming disinterest in delivering a message of unity.

Would it be appropriate if I know started to state that Trump is not my President, because he doesn't stand for Unity, and by extension me?

Yesterday our small Ohio city had the biggest demonstration on record - around 1,500 (population 20,000)

Entirely peaceful.

The crowd was at least half white - in particular lots of white women: must be that empathy thing.

The local Reich tried to sow fear and hysteria as best they could - writing on FB that busloads of Antifa were on

the way and that the National Guard was mobilizing. All lies of course; but local businesses spend thousands

on boarding up windows, extra security, etc.

Did I mention that I despise the Reich ??

Bullshit.  That is what YOU and your elk want to make the argument into.

The point is blacks killed by police.

Black Lives Matter (BLM) is an international human rights movement, originating in the African-American community, that campaigns against violence and systemic racism towards black people. BLM regularly holds protests speaking out against police killings of black people, and broader issues such as racial profiling, police brutality, and racial inequality in the United States criminal justice system.

Black Lives Matter

Maybe a scholarly article will help you understand WHY blacks feel like they are more likely to die at the hands of police than whites.  Because they are.

Significance

Police violence is a leading cause of death for young men in the United States. Over the life course, about 1 in every 1,000 black men can expect to be killed by police. Risk of being killed by police peaks between the ages of 20 y and 35 y for men and women and for all racial and ethnic groups. Black women and men and American Indian and Alaska Native women and men are significantly more likely than white women and men to be killed by police. Latino men are also more likely to be killed by police than are white men.

Abstract

We use data on police-involved deaths to estimate how the risk of being killed by police use of force in the United States varies across social groups. We estimate the lifetime and age-specific risks of being killed by police by race and sex. We also provide estimates of the proportion of all deaths accounted for by police use of force. We find that African American men and women, American Indian/Alaska Native men and women, and Latino men face higher lifetime risk of being killed by police than do their white peers. We find that Latina women and Asian/Pacific Islander men and women face lower risk of being killed by police than do their white peers. Risk is highest for black men, who (at current levels of risk) face about a 1 in 1,000 chance of being killed by police over the life course. The average lifetime odds of being killed by police are about 1 in 2,000 for men and about 1 in 33,000 for women. Risk peaks between the ages of 20 y and 35 y for all groups. For young men of color, police use of force is among the leading causes of death.

Risk of being killed by police use of force in the United States by age, race–ethnicity, and sex

Anybody who would argue that black people are lying about systemic racism and lying about police brutality... what the fuck is wrong with you? Is this like scientists "lying" about climate change to make a buck? Or hospitals "lying" about Covid-19 to "profit"?

Do you have worms in your brain or are you just an ignorant asshole @BravoBravo?

Then you know fuck all about civil unrest in the context you express it.

It is the 4th of May 1970 and that is Jeff Miller a student from Kent State University dead, shot by the Ohio National Guard.

The girl kneeling over Jeff, a 14 yo run-away Mary Vecchi who came with around 2,000 people to watch the student protest. That photo went around the world on the cover of Life Magazine, horrifying many.

2068876218_images-2020-05-30T050521_130.jpeg.0b08329ba193c4ec6f2ca84f504ce762.jpeg

A week later on the 10th over a 100,000 protesters marched on DC, many travelling days to get there. It wasn't about Jeff and the other 3 dead by the hand of the state, Bill Schroeder, Sandy Scheuer and Allison Krause that day either.

They simply became the "focal point" of a nation deeply divided by the Vietnam War....just as Floyd is today over civil rights and a political system in the US that has gone to shit.

Those four from May 1970 and this one from May 2020 50 years later, it was no longer about them the moment they stopped breathing.
