Bars, restaurants.  Makes sense.

Not sure how much of a difference Home Depot makes, though.  Here in NYC/Brooklyn, anyways, they've been on top of things.  Strictly limiting capacity (it can take an hour, waiting in line, outside, 6 feet apart, to get in) and enforcing masks, from very early on.  Way before it was mandated.  I remember taking the subway, and none of the MTA people were wearing masks, and only half the riders  -  about the same on the street  -  then walking into Home Depot, and everyone was: they had a guy at the door enforcing it.

I was actually kind of impressed, and I'm not usually a big fan of that company (I miss having many local lumberyards, like we used to)...

It sure didn't take long to go from 150,000 to 156,000 for the country best able to deal with a pandemic.

Wow that is a complete 180 from my Home Depot - no enforcement at all and when asked about it were told they were not to ask or require people to wear masks.  All while standing in front of large signs stating you must have a mask on..

In May we had all (well, a lot of us anyway) been sheltering in place for 6 to 8 weeks and the virus didn't appear to be that bad. Then Texas opened up, even though the numbers never went down they weren't going up that much - the guidance was open slowly when numbers were going down. The results are pretty obvious to almost everyone now and suddenly I see people are wearing masks and distancing again.

There are a number of states where this exact scenario is playing out, rinse and repeat.

The lastest going around the local Florida pubs, Too many positive are showing up from people in car/motorcycles accident deaths?

so in 2019 over the whole year 37000 people died in car deaths so the average in 4 months is 9000, yet in the last 4 months 150,000 from the virus. so if all the car deaths were listed as virus deaths that's only 6%.

I guess Herman Cain was a lousy driver

Kaliforn-I-A leading the way.  Just shows it's not just red states that are COVIDIOTS:

BREAKING NEWS

California became the first state to report more than 500,000 coronavirus cases, according to a Times database. Here’s the latest.

Friday, July 31, 2020 10:27 PM EST

California locked down its residents relatively early, on March 19, buying time for hospitals and public health workers to prepare for an expected onslaught. The state’s weekly average number of infections in late April was less than 20 percent of what it is today.

But while the restrictions led to early success in the state, which has the world’s fifth-largest economy, they eventually wore on residents reeling from spikes in unemployment. Resistance mounted to the restrictions.

Yup. Saw a tourist outside the Post Office here yesterday. All the locals in masks. His wife and kids in masks. Him standing proudly behind his ample gut celebrating his mask-freedums. As he walked into the minimart I could see that his camo trousers were his bold statement of safety. "MAGA! Fuck the posted signs and state mandates."

Normally don't see such creatures here in liberal paradise. The fuckwits are everywhere.

How did you know he was a tourist?  Do you guys brand everyone on the forehead who crosses over the state borders or at the airport?

Because there is no way in fucking hell that Kali's case numbers are driven by tourists.  As the article said, the lockdown was wearing on the kali denizens and they finally said fuck it.

Well, first of all - how do you know what elk he is and more importantly how to you know what elk I am?  I have been 100% masked up in public since late Jan.  So definitely not one of mine.  Odds are in Kali that he's a liberal maskless fuckwit, just based on the numbers of your elk.

The fact is, no matter how much you all want to deny it - Kalifornians are driving Kali's case numbers.  So when you're all pointing your fingers at TX and FL and calling them fuckwits (which I wholeheartedly agree they are complete fuckwits), you also need to look in the mirror.  Your leaders let you down and your fellow Obama/Biden/Bernie/Hillary bumper sticker covered Volvo citizens let you down even more.

what mirror?  Californians are fuckwits too, especially in the region where the majority of the numbers are coming from. I call it the LA-Rogan-Vegas triangle.

Yes, plenty of fuckwits for sure. It’s not known as the fruitcake state for nothing. Sad part is the massive hit to the Latino population. Not fuckwits, they just have to work and live in close proximity to others.

But but but..... I was told by the intelligentsia here that the economy was secondary to saving people's lives and that work was not required, that everyone should just stay home for the duration.  Now you're telling me that yes, in fact some people do need to work in order to not starve - essentially contradicting the previous message from your elk that saving the economy so people wouldn't starve was unnecessary.  I'm so confused.

Why, because I speak the truth and am calling you and your elk out on those previous statements?  All I heard back in April and May from ya'll was "keep the shutdown going, don't reopen, the economy is secondary" and on and on.  And now suddenly Jose needs to eat.  Ya think?

I mean  -  sure, you're an anti-Trump republican, but the mask resistance is still a product of your political community's subculture.

The problem with "burn the bitch down" is that you're basically trying to pretend you had nothing to do with what your community turned into.

I hate trying to respond to these multi quotes.  Anyway, no I'm not pretending to be anything.  I have been reliably republican up until 2012.  I voted for Obama round two as I didn't like Romney enough to make a change.  But more than that, the GOP has left me more than I left it.  The GOP I once knew and believed it no longer exists.  In that @Sol Rosenberg is correct.

The party of Tea is what pushed me over the edge.  In the early days, I liked what they were saying -  back when it really was kinda grass rootsey and they talked about going back to basics of the constitution and really trying to do smaller, more agile gov't.  But the overlords soon figured out that was a threat to them and they immediately co-opted the TP and turned it into a religious tent revival talking in tongues and handling snakes.  Granted the religious undercurrent shit was there since Reagan, but it was manageable early on.  But I was becoming more and more disillusioned as time went on when not only was the GOP no longer fiscally conservative, but the social wedge issue BS that was more what the party had become about was consuming all the oxygen in our political discourse.  Trumpster was the final straw and why I called for BTDB (B=GOP) because I saw no other way to move forward.  There had to either be a complete remake of the party or it had to go and something needs to replace it.  For a long time, I thought it could be fixed from within - but I now see that is a fool's errand.  So it needs to burn down and trump was the match needed to finally get the bonfire going.  It succeeded FAR beyond my wildest imagination.  Bitch Mac and some of the other GOPers are starting to attempt to unhitch their wagons, but I think it's far too late for them.  I hope and pray with all my strength that biden wins and there is a landslide D win in the Senate and all those ass-clowns get tossed.  NOT because I believe in all of the tenants of the D party - some I do, most I don't - but having the GOP lost in the wilderness will hopefully cause some intense soul-searching and we will either strip out all the things that got us here or start fresh with a whole new party.  I would prefer the latter, tbh.  Too much baggage in the current one to sort through.  Better to set that baggage on fire and start fresh.  To all the religious whackadoos - go start your own party.  You need not apply to the new one.

I don't disagree, but that early TP had all those ingredients, already.  As an occupy supporter who thought we should band together, I signed up for all their lists, and forums... didn't take long to see where it was headed.

The actual number of victims claimed last week was this ...

675, 164, 313, 84, 295

Total Median Deaths in Texas:

  1. Clean: 151.8
  2. Mike: 168.6,
  3. Actual Reported: 306.2

Unfortunately for the victims, both you and I were wide off the mark, however I did guess more accurately than you did, and thus you might reconsider (at least for a week) my opinions on this whole thing, but then I consider these systems from a stochastic POV, and you and most others here seem to consider them from a political POV, so that may not work for you. My thoughts for this week's numbers for the unfortunate COVID death victims in Texas ...

221, 71, 328, 75, 528

What do you guess?

Well, that doesn't bode well for a VP nod then. She's a Congresswoman from CA and has been in the House since 2011. Before that she was Speaker of the Assembly which is kinda good except that in CA we have term limits now and so someone has to do it. Villaraigosa was Speaker and then became Mayor of LA. It's a job. That's pretty much it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Bass

Nancy rules her Caucus. She expects her Critters to do the work, both in governance and in fundraising/electoral work. Don't do the work, don't get Committee Chairs, ... My Critter, Barbara Lee, is very lazy (but wanted to be Ambassador to Cuba!) and despite having been in the House for 12 terms, she has never held a Chair ... because she's lazy. Bass has held two subcommittee chairs. So it's possible to conclude from that that Bass does the work. She's not Hakeem Jeffries, but she's not Barbara Lee.

Otherwise, there's the Scientology kerfuffle which showed bad judgment and the Castro kerfuffle which showed bad judgment.

Still, I can't think of anything that recommends her. What's she gonna do, deliver CA for Biden? She hasn't even run state wide in CA and has no national stature. So I'm just not seeing VP material here. That said, I like Susan Rice a lot. She's brilliant, knows everyone in DC and out of DC. Huge Susan Rice fan. So not "looney bin" just meant "whatever", not that she's a loon.

What she delivers is she's a Centrist Black Woman, and relatively unknown  -  the R's don't have folders of pre-manufactured oppo on her.

Rice hasn't been Secretary of State, and she's perfect for it.  Her resume screams that she's wanted the job for decades, it's not subtle.

Bass expressed condolences when Fidel croaked, so she would cause Cuban American heads to explode. She also openly advocates closer ties with Cuba, which also causes great angst in Dade County, to which I can attest.

OTOH Biden has said that he would restore the Obama/Cuba policy. This is huge, because democRAT Presidents who have defended freedom by giving US citizens the right to travel instead of forbidding it have done so in the second term, likely because of electoral concerns. Biden saying it already means it is a priority and/or he thinks he can win Florida irrespective of Cuban American angst. That’s the kind of project that a VP could take on. Bass?  I need to know more, though I suspect she is a head fake for the Bullshit Machine.

True, Biden has CA. Could Val Demmings deliver Florida? I’m not sure she can or that Biden needs her to win FL. I will say that if Biden wins FL, Trump’s path to 270 gets damn near impossible, but Biden better win FL by double digits if he wants to be credited for winning.

Bass offered condolences. This was after Obama had met with Castro, visited Cuba and re-opened embassies (although Republicans wouldn't confirm his choice for Ambassador.) Calling it a kerfuffle is just wrong.

Also, I got my history backwards. Rice had been NSA and had been in the running for Secretary of State before Kerry was chosen. She was an Assistant Secretary of State under Clinton and UN Ambassador as well as NSA under Obama. She has the foreign policy experience wired.

Bass+Demmings strike me as political choices rather than governing choices. You couldn't send either to the Middle East or some other diplomatic hotspot and expect anything but confusion. Rice will draw fire from the elk but  Bass+Demmings+Harris will as well.

Trump won MI by about 11K votes out of 4.5M in '16.  I'll be shocked if Biden doesn't win MI by over 100K (more likely 3-400K).  Outside of FL, OH should be the closest contest of the states you mentioned.

You can’t make choices based on the wishes of the elk. Obama tried to work across the aisle early on and Mitch gave him the old lady from Blazing Saddles. A white democRAT will get the same treatment. Expecting a different result this time is a negligent waste of time. Rice would be great at State or VP.

I don't know about that. Ohio seems to be moving further red. I think Biden is more likely to pick up NC, AZ, and FL than OH. Biden is almost certainly going to pick up PA. It would take a seismic shit for PA to vote for Trump again.

Yeah but it's like not torturing prisoners. You can't give up or you quickly slide the rest of the way down that hill.

I would like to see a realistic effort to work across the aisles, and to see that effort continue even if rebuffed. Obama had the patience of a saint but he still gave up.

Results not really expected, but the effort must be made. It's part of national leadership and statesmanship IMHO

This. The mainstream GOP is Trumpist now. Q is the Party. When the people on the other side think you are running a child sex ring and hate our country, you need not invest time into finding common ground. We have real problems to fix.

I thought I knew what that word meant, but maybe I don't.  Could you paraphrase this bit?  I have no idea what you're saying in that sentence.

Stichastic system just requires at least one random variable.

So you do your math, and whatever you don't know, you shove a random variable into the equation. Then you try to structure the equation if possible, so that your random variable doesn't destabilize the system. That's easier to do with infections and deaths because we know that common infections tend toward some asymptote. It's very hard to do with financial markets, because the asymptotes are far more extreme.

So you take your biggest problem (this random variable) and then you just ignore it as long as possible. For some reason, it works. Mammograms essentially have a stochastic processor in them, because there is no clear way to find small growths in breast tissue, and yet, it works really well.

Stochastics are terrific to see when someone fucked up and got themselves into too deep of a financial position, but they're useless to see where the market is headed. It's the asymptote that redeems the random variable. In the case of infections, rhinoviruses and coronaviruses are known to spread exponentially, but cause a contained number of deaths, there's the asymptote. AIDS didn't originally have that, it seemed that deaths increased as quickly as infections.

My explanation sucks, apologies.

Seriously?  The old - Elections have consequences, I won - comment sure sounds like he tried to work across the aisle.

That explains a lot.

(sorry, couldn't resist, it was too perfectly set-up)

(jokes aside, I'll have to ponder those paragraphs for half a day to figure out what you're saying.

That's no a reflection on your explanation.  It's just that my most recent science class was grade 11 physics, in 1984/85.

Stochastics is a brand new math, even the formalism is still a work in progress.

It's like a Dirac Delta Function or renormalization ... everything we know about math and nature tells us that it's not supposed to work, but for some reason, it works.

It's also testament to the reality that measurement beats theory. Amateur scientists have a lot of trouble with that idea, but for those of us who pay our rent with science, it's the only way that a person can make a living in this field without being famous or having a wealthy family.
