Handheld VHF Antenna

Recommended Posts

I see that Standard Horizon offers an adapter from my standard antenna to a  BNC adapter. For $10 or so, I can buy a longer BNC VHF antenna on amazon. Has anyone tried this? On the water, I have no troubles at all. I live across the street from the lake and about 1/2 mile from the sailing area. With trees and stuff, I get spotty handheld VHF reception. I could mount an 8' antenna on the roof and put a fixed VHF in the garage, but was thinking maybe upgrading one of my radios to a BNC attached antenna would get me the extra reception I want. On a good day, I get about 75% of communications. On a bad day, it's 10%. Thoughts?

The roof antenna would be a great help if it has a better view of the sailing area. Why does your reception vary from 10% to 75%? Wet foliage? Motorhome in the driveway?

It varies with where the course is relative to my house...and whether the island is between me and the course.

If you are talking about operating a marine VHF from your home you need to do some research.  FCC does not allow this unless you have a shore license.  From what I understand this is hard to impossible to get unless the site is commercial and used for the marine industry (marina, fuel dock,..)

I have never heard about anyone getting in trouble for it and am not saying don't do it just make sure you know what you are getting into.
