Boat sinks in parade wake

Recommended Posts

Small boat founders and sinks; news attributes it to the combined wake of a parade of flag-waving stinkpots.

It looks to me as if it's either not enough  boat for that river to begin with, it's overloaded, or the skipper simply failed to turn into some of the waves - I obviously dont know...

It does occur to me that "if" the Trump Navy were all blasting by at maximum wake speed, it might cause something like this to someone ill-prepared to handle repeated deep swells.

It was Trump's fault.

That Trump parade came by me and they were the biggest waves I’ve ever seen on the Willamette. Well beyond a “reasonable man” action, but it’s a big busy river.   If they had a permit, it should have had some provision for at least warning boaters.

The parading poweboaters created a hazardous situation causing the loss of a boat.   Is there any way they are not responsible?   Perhaps the narrow channel amplified the wave unpredictably, perhaps the lost boat could have presented a bow to the wave and survived without submarining.  Like a stand on sailboat not maneuvering sufficiently fast to dodge a powerboat with poor trim or inadequate watch, there is often more that could have been done to compensate for the failure of the other guy but not much time to do it.   If the sunken boat was loaded beyond the CG plaque that would shift much of the burden.   I doubt the runabout's capacity was less then 6 people.   I counted 5, assuming the jetski rendering assistance (a good jetski is a phrase I never expected to type) had one rider.

Yeah, but there's nothing political about seeking forensic analysis of a boating accident. There is more "PA" material in suggesting that it be posted in PA, that there is in the OP.

Public service announcement:  If you want to make this about the claimed proclivities of people who support the the president, there's a thread in PA for that.  Not here, please.  Have at it.

Kind of charming -- one lone sailboat, going against the grain.

What, that looked like a sailboat to you?  Shitty video, but it looks more like a low-freeboard runabout.

No, if you look further down the news article, there is a longer video posted, and there is one lone sailboat going the opposite direction of the powerboaters, and as it appears, right down the middle of the channel.

Boy, I missed that entirely.  Too focused on the immediate mayhem I suppose.  Thanks.

The conditions were more extreme than bouy 10 at the mouth of CR would be. The leaders were running water bags and wake surfing. Big following wave train on a constricting reflective channel.

The parade people were being assholes.

Is anyone surprised?

Not related to the parade or cause, but an observation.

If the boat is sinking, why are so many folks under the dodger for so long?

Yes, I know, armchair critique of the moment.

One kid on the bow.  Good.   Rest of the troop seems huddled forward.  That was a trap that could have ended badly.

I'm glad they look to have all gotten out.

Funny how they have the tube out and almost deployed.  Bet they got the kids in off that raft real quick when they saw the mass of humanity barreling down on them.  Could you imagine??  UUUUHHH honey??

I was disappointed to read that those affected were not participating in the parade.

My guess is they were frantically looking for a pump or bailer, trying to save their boat.  I watched a Coast Guard dramamentory on youtube the other day.   Even they were frantically pumping out a drug runner boat full of evidence despite the gunnels being underwater.   Its easy to be too caught up in the heat of the moment to step back and analyze the situation.  Alternately, they were trying to save the beer.

I'm sure that all the racist Trumpaloo-Tard boaters participating were too busy beating their chests and having a giant circle jerk to even notice a boat was in distress, possibly because of their un-monitored by them, wake damage..:(

An important life lesson.   Beer floats and sandals don’t.

A fact that has been known by life raft manufacturers for years. Well, you don’t see any life rafts made of sandals now, do you?

Or sandal derivatives.

Definitely no flip-flops, or Australian thongs.

Flip flops float just fine.

What fancy schmancy flip flops are you using?

A raft of flip flops (go-heads or whatever name you like) would be a very suitable flotation aid in an emergency.  Not sure about the southern ocean, but it really depends on the color choice.

Well they obviously DON’T float, and what you’re showing is just propaganda and fake news. If they did float there would be life rafts made from them. And are there? Well?

Q.E.D.

So there.

After a capsize only one of two sandals remains on surface.    There will inevitably be one missing,

I was hoping somebody would question this fact, known by anybody who has sand launched a small boat.   :D

My 25' i/o powerboat has two speeds: 5 knots at idle and 20 knots (up to 40 knots) on plane. Anything in between 5 and 20 is stupid and rude. But maybe stupid and rude was the point on Lake Travis...

They had one of these parades on Allatoona a couple of weeks ago (which I did not attend) but was organized to run at no wake-speeds. I don't know if that happened, but at least no one sank.

10 boat names we'll see at the "Lake Eufaula Trump Boat Parade!" – The Lost Ogle

I saw this one on my phone news feed this morning but had a hell of a time finding it on Google.

This is just funny.

With a little help from some friends, I'd like to provide this tribute to those poor boaters on Lake Travis - you all know the tune:

The legend began as an afternoon plan
to burn fuel like a fool on Lake Travis.
Each boater was sure he was safe and secure
with no masks and no floats, or no compass.
Packed with coolers of Buds, or some other cheap suds,
they sought ways their Dear Leader to flatter.
Yet each call for distress was ignored like the rest,
as they say, "Doesn't Every Boat Matter'?
They represented pride in the far right wing side,
Spouting fears that are entirely baseless.
And what it is too, they were like bones to be chewed in the friendly fire wake of other racists.
They might have split up and they might have capsized,
They may have broke deep and took water,
But all that remains is the very good brain
Of the orange guy groping his daughter.
Does anyone know where the love of Trump goes
when your friends’ waves sink your boat in an instance?
The experts they say they’d have stayed nice and safe
If they’d bothered to just social distance.
