Let me add some meat to that.

Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the White House, he paid another $750.

He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years — largely because he reported losing much more money than he made.

As the president wages a re-election campaign that polls say he is in danger of losing, his finances are under stress, beset by losses and hundreds of millions of dollars in debt coming due that he has personally guaranteed. Also hanging over him is a decade-long audit battle with the Internal Revenue Service over the legitimacy of a $72.9 million tax refund that he claimed, and received, after declaring huge losses. An adverse ruling could cost him more than $100 million.

bust-narrow.jpg

The tax returns that Mr. Trump has long fought to keep private tell a story fundamentally different from the one he has sold to the American public. His reports to the I.R.S. portray a businessman who takes in hundreds of millions of dollars a year yet racks up chronic losses that he aggressively employs to avoid paying taxes. Now, with his financial challenges mounting, the records show that he depends more and more on making money from businesses that put him in potential and often direct conflict of interest with his job as president.

The New York Times has obtained tax-return data extending over more than two decades for Mr. Trump and the hundreds of companies that make up his business organization, including detailed information from his first two years in office. It does not include his personal returns for 2018 or 2019. This article offers an overview of The Times’s findings; additional articles will be published in the coming weeks.

Trump has relied on lawyers to get him out pf paying what he owes countless times.  It was probably 20 or more years ago I read an interview article about him where he said "Lawyers are cheaper."  That's his MO.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/27/us/trump-taxes-takeaways.html

Excerpt -

Among the key findings of The Times’s investigation:

  • Mr. Trump paid no federal income taxes in 11 of 18 years that The Times examined. In 2017, after he became president, his tax bill was only $750.

  • He has reduced his tax bill with questionable measures, including a $72.9 million tax refund that is the subject of an audit by the Internal Revenue Service.

  • Many of his signature businesses, including his golf courses, report losing large amounts of money — losses that have helped him to lower his taxes.

  • The financial pressure on him is increasing as hundreds of millions of dollars in loans he personally guaranteed are soon coming due.

  • Even while declaring losses, he has managed to enjoy a lavish lifestyle by taking tax deductions on what most people would consider personal expenses, including residences, aircraft and $70,000 in hairstyling for television.

  • Ivanka Trump, while working as an employee of the Trump Organization, appears to have received “consulting fees” that also helped reduce the family’s tax bill.

  • As president, he has received more money from foreign sources and U.S. interest groups than previously known. The records do not reveal any previously unreported connections to Russia.

You can look it up -

Obama released seven years’ worth of his tax returns during his 2008 presidential campaign — keeping with longstanding tradition of transparency by many major party candidates. Then, while in office, he published on the White House website his tax returns for 2008200920102011201220132014and 2015.

To be fair, I bet about all of the 1% would pay $99 in legal fees to avoid $100 in taxes. Trump is just the only one dumb enough to get into politics

Also dumb enough, familial, to do stuff like declare the consultant income to the exact dollar that was illegally paid. Also the two boys going on at length about an estate they used as a family residence that was nominally an investment property. At times they are their own worst enemies.

Looking so forward to the soon to be announced IRS forensic accounting investigation of all things Trump,  not excluding the children.
If that’s not actively underway now I expect it will be announced around November 4th perhaps.

Between the lawyers the IRS and the outstanding lawsuits it would be karma for Trump and the children to end up with precisely zero and having to dress in Orange to receive their food and board.

That begs the question why did the IRS keep this confidential all these years? Yeah, he was under an audit, why a rolling audit, and why was it allowed?

How can the elk defend this one. Trump's appealing behaviour in so many ways has been completely normalized. He has done dozens of things that would mark the end of any other president's reign. Hopefully this one is enough.

He will be envied by his followers.  If bad-mouthing the military doesn't lose him followers, this won't either.

"If you don't like it, change the tax laws" and "that means he's smart" and on and on.

Trump issue a strong denial..

“That is totally fake news, made-up, fake, we will do the same stories you can ask me the same question four years ago I had to litigate this and talk about it,” Trump said.

The President went on to ramble about how he’s been under IRS audit for “a long time.”

“The IRS does not treat me well, they treat me like the tea party and they never treat me well, they treat me very badly,” Trump said.

The fake appears to be Trump and families business acumen.

The NYT review of Trumps business dealings shows him to be at best egotistical and inept.

His way seems to rely upon tax credits and licensing  to offset outgoings far in excess of those numbers, and let's not forget he once sued Deutsche Bank and won over his failure to repay debt.

I'm picking it will be the best most spectacular bankruptcy ever.

Let's pretend for a minute that every tax deduction Trump took is legit.  That means the real fraud is his ability to run a business.

No wonder Deutsche Bank, you know, the bank that is under several compliance investigations, including for enabling tax evasion in the EU, is the only bank that will lend to him.
