It's good to know that the proletariat will no longer be in charge.

Didn't work in Russia and it didn't work in the States.

On election day on 580 in Oakland, I saw a 4x4 flying the Shitstain flag spewing Prius repellent. I'm sure he was doing this for nuanced reasons.

There are limits to not judging a book by it's cover.  If  you scrawl shit like that on your vehicle, for either side,  I'll make the reasonable presumption that you're fucking nuts.

Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with a bumper sticker or two. We've got a guy down the street who, after the 2016 election, put a bumper sticker on his truck with Obama's picture on it with the words "You're Fired."   A little misunderstanding of the distinction between term limits vs. firing maybe, but not crazy.

Yeah, and ditto with neighbors flying their Trump flags on their house as long as they like. They're still good folks, they still help push Biden cars out of snowbanks. A lot of the nuttery is hurt feelings, sadness and tied to the same kind of emotions as seeing the Patriots get their perfect season blown to hell by the Giants, 18-1 forever, and ever and ever and ever.

Before the election I read a lot from my fellow lefties about "coming together" and "healing" and at least in this thread from the usual suspects, there isn't a whole lot of that.

But Neighbor Day is coming again, it's 3/11.

I have acquaintances who continue to support and defend President Trump.

They are whining about how the Democrats aren't interested in "healing" and "coming together".

I just laugh and laugh.

First off, why do you even care about political issues in the USA? You have an enormous problem of far-right nationalism and Islamaphobia in France that should capture your attention.

Second, gouging out one eye to spite the other eye doesn't necessarily encourage healthy vision.

Do you folks in France celebrate Neighbor Day even though you don't have the 311 system? You should, it's a good holiday, it's 3/11. You get shitfaced with your neighbors, clean up trash, help do repairs and cleaning for the elderly, hand prepackaged snacks like chips and sodas to the neighborhood kids who maraud around like Halloween, and have fun. And nobody talks about politics or religion or sports. Try it, French Fry, it's called Neighbor Day, it's 3/11.

In many countries that have suffered the kind of political turmoil that the USA is flirting with, the history suggests that there is no healing. Once people start killing each other over politics (or religion), murderous grudges last for generations.

Fuck 'em. The Trumptards were (and many still are) plotting to begin a civil war which basically means murdering their neighbors. They ain't gonna get far in my county, if I can help it. When they fucking grow up and act like responsible citizens, I'll treat them as such. Until then, I'll treat them like dumb children playing with matches.

" Not done much" = never started a trade war that bankrupted the midwest farm belt, never pardoned a bunch of business associates and relatives, never dismantled the medical science branch of the public health service AND presided over events where thousands of USAnians spread a potentially deadly disease, never spoke at the UN and was laughed at, never required help walking up and down a ramp, never fucked and then bribed a porn star, never held meetings with the head of a hostile foreign country with no other Americans in the room, never sued the US or state gov'ts to overturn an election....

G.W. Bush bombed women and children from remote control flying robots.

Obama bombed women and children from remote control flying robots.

Trump bombed women and children from remote control flying robots.

Biden has made no effort to claim he will not bomb women and children from remote control flying robots.

Given the continuum, and his actions as VP for a President who bombed women and children from remote control flying robots, Biden will likely bomb women and children from remote control flying robots.

People have figured out to get people like this on your side you got to tell them stories which get them emotionally involved. The bold and the beautiful, an ongoing saga with likable characters and villains . They'll vote, empty their pockets and march on cue, facts be damned.

I'm sure some bright young people after witnessing the damage wrought by qanon and trumpist will figure out a narrative and means to manipulate and wean a significant chunk from the RWM. I personally would find it icky but I can see the need and justification. People like GD really believe Biden’s gonna put hunter into his cabinet and he'll go around the world (with Biden’s knowledge/guidance) exhorting bribes and then finally will get pardoned, and he's not part of a small minority but a large significant one. No problems with Ivanka in China or Jared's shenanigans in the ME but somehow Biden’s already betraying the US to China, no facts needed its a belief as strong as Jesus.

It's hard to make people aware of propaganda and manipulation when it jells with their value system.

There is nothing to fear if this is a sample of the average Trumpaloon.

'Going to get ugly': Trump supporter uses work email to threaten 'mass execution of public officials

Michigan state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D) on Tuesday called out a supporter of President Donald Trump who sent a threatening email to lawmakers.

"This was sent to my office this evening from Randall Yaeger, who chose to send it from his work email at Yaeger Construction. This email has already been sent to the authorities," Pohutsky said in a Facebook post.

Yaeger's email repeated debunked claims of massive voter fraud and warned that "American voters will now be forced to change our government officials with bullets instead of ballots."

The threatening email also "predicts" that the "mass execution" of public officials will begin "very soon" unless Trump is given a second term as president.

I was very clear in what I wrote, that it's "inexcusable" for the "buck stopper" to do it. There is thus no reason for you to turn it around and compare it to H1N1 since I already beat you to the point that the "candidate's" actions are inexcusable.

Given that ... as for the voters, they're obviously disempowered. Their rebellion should be cause for alarm that a huge portion of our country feels insufficiently represented. We shouldn't have politics that alienates so many people, it doesn't serve the cause of what our country is supposed to be and do. Fewer lefties did with Gore and Kerry for obvious reasons, we feel we have a stake in the country and when we lose in one place, we can recover elsewhere. But we all share this place, we share the governments, the cost of supporting the defense, we share the problems and the successes, we're neighbors, friends and family. There is no reason for lefties not to do whatever is necessary to include these "MAGAs" in our concerns and conversations, that's what we do for neighbors, friends and family.

By the way, Neighbor Day is 3/11.

I know what it is. In 2006 Chicago banned its sale. Repealed in 3098.

Hmmmmm....

Judging by the relative lack of coverage of Trumpaloon signage he’s slightly less nuts than the Trump pipe bomber from Miami, but he’s on the path.  Give him another year.

"Racist death cult" is extreme. My MAGA-tard friends and family seem to have just as much interest in the continued health and well-being of their children and grandchildren as anyone else. When the subject changes from politics to anything else, nothing comes off as being too unusual.

Now Flat Earthers, I knew one of those, and that person was so purely unctuous that I couldn't even stand being in the same room as her. I can and have spent an afternoon on a Jon Boat with a twelve pack and a casting rod with a Trumpalo. I could not do the same with a Flat Earther.

One of my MAGA-tard friends listens to King Crimson, Snakefinger, Fela Kuti and Frank Zappa. I can spend an unlimited amount of time with that guy. His politics do not equate to racist death cult.

If I was a traffic cop and saw that I'd pull him over for a safety check and have a look inside for sacks of AN.

First off, why do you even care about political issues in the USA? You have an enormous problem of far-right nationalism and Islamaphobia in France that should capture your attention.

Because the politics in the Divided States of A still impact global politics. If it would be only your problem i would wish you Trump times 10.

Nope.

How is the Scientologist in a cult, but the Christians are not in a cult? What's the difference?

Or is Christianity just another cult that has grown sufficiently large to change its definition as a "cult"?

Impacts?

Do you mean that my country spends public funds to kill people all over the world, and yet we can't be bothered to save the lives of children in those same countries that we bomb?

The person whom you're supporting with that post claims to have keyed the vehicles of Trump supporters.

A "cult" is different from a religion, they're not synonyms

Agreed.

So what's the difference in this case?

People in Scientology and Christianity shovel their money into their church. People in Scientology and Christianity lose family members who don't adhere to the dogma. People in Scientology revere a central figure, as do Christians.

Is the main difference here that Christianity is just a cult that grew sufficiently large that they have the numbers on their side?

Technically, a "cult" is any religion that you join after childhood, that your parents did not introduce you to. However it certainly carries a lot of negative connotations: A cult requires a significant commitment to divert ones' wealth and alter ones' lifestyle outside norms. A cult requires obedience to a revered authority, usually the cult's founder, above any civil authority. A cult deliberately attempts to severe connections with non-cult members.

There certainly are some churches/congregations within within Christianity that have the characteristics of cults. As a whole, Christianity is incredibly diverse and it's very very difficult to make any blanket statement true about all Christians/Christianity, even that they acknowledge Christ... I know a bunch of Methodists and Baptists who will vehemently insist that Methodists and Catholics (spoken by a Baptist), or Catholics and Baptists (spoken by a Methodist), are NOT "Christian" at all.

I agree that "cult" carries negative connotations, and thus Christians, Muslims, Jews, Bhais, Buddhists, Hindus and others would not anything to do with a label like that.

But what's the actual difference?

A lot of people in Scientology were born into it, are they not then members of a cult? Do not some Fundamentalist Christians revere their Heavenly Father to the point clearly above "civil authority" where they are able to attack abortion doctors, and block entrances to abortion clinics, and in some cases even stockpile weapons, and commit any number of illegal acts?

So does it just truly boil down to "cultural norms" like you write? If so, then there is really no difference between cult and religion, other than that religion acquires enough leverage to control a cultural norm and thus make their cult-like actions resemble religion.

But there are clearly small religions, many times smaller than "cults." How did these small religions escape the cult-label? There are far more Scientologists than for instance, B'hais, so how does B'hai escape with "religion" while Scientology is slapped with "cult"? I have no problem with Frenchie deciding that his Scientology friend is in a cult, but why aren't all those Ultra-Orthodox Jews and candle-burning Catholics in his neighborhood also not members of cults? What's the difference?

Religions don't have science fiction writers as their messiah.

Especially science fiction writers who were known to have said "If you want to get really rich, start a religion".

The Potter Stewart rule applies" I may not be able to define it but I know it when I see it".

Right, we can't define it, we just know that when someone walks across water that he will shortly turn into wine and will later arise from the dead to be the subject of books written by science fiction writers from over a thousand years ago, to form the most profitable religion in the history of the planet, that's religion. And if a variation of that happened more recently, that's a cult.

So what about Mormonism? Religion or cult?

Branch Davidians? Religion or cult?

B'hai? Religion or cult?

Islam? Religion or cult?

Sufism? Religion or cult?

John Frum? Religion or cult?

Heaven's Gate? Religion or cult?

Christian Science? Religion or cult?

It seems we label as "cult" the religions we don't like, and we label "religion" to the cults which we belong. As an outsider to the game, apologies, but I don't see a clear difference between religion and cult other than winners and losers of the faith-based popularity contest.

We can define it quite well, you just don't like the definition. Feel free to make up your own definition, you'll just sound like an idiot/snowflake

Mikey is only correct once in 450 posts, but he’s sure correct here. It’s an old exercise to challenge believers to explain the difference between a cult and a religion. They are literally just different sized but otherwise identical things. Otherwise, feel free to come up with something that actually distinguishes any of them.

I've know of about five definitions, all fail to work on anything other than popularity.

And even popularity fails ... B'hai is a religion even though it is less than half the size of Scientology the cult.

Arguing about cult vs religion?

Try a dictionary. ..

Just did, and it even uses "religion" in the definition of cult.  If you actually look at it with reason, a cult sort of worships an actual person where a religion worships a made up deity.  Cults, in a weird way, sort of make more sense.

Agreeing with mikewof makes me want to go pour a very stiff drink.

He's not really correct here, he's just trying to be a pseudo-pedantic dick.

There is in fact a definition for the word "cult." It's narrower and a bit more specific than "religion" and there's nothing that excludes a "cult" from being a "religion" but many "religions" are not "cults."

He's not a very good scientist, either.
