      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Catherine,

It is not often that someone I have never met affects me the way you have. It is raining like hell out, my students decided to take Spring Break a day early and then I read the latest news about your fight. You should be proud. Proud that the mere mention of a sharpie will trigger the memories of anyone who has made these forums a part of their lives. Proud of the battle you are fighting. Proud to be such a vibrant person. I hope above all else that you find peace. You certainly deserve peace.

Catherine, I drank a shot for you last night as promised. The bartender, Sheila, selected her own concoction called Malibu Fever which seemed basically like a mini MaiTai. Sweet with a kick, just for you. Stickies, if not legible, say: We love you Catherine!

And +1 to Bob Perry's post.

Catherine - Bad Jelly gave me the news you were having a challenge or 3, what can I say girl - you broke my body & heart in '07.... now you wanna walk out on the party?

C'mon Catherine, a big smile is my lasting memory of you (Oh & that huge frikkin Bar tab") that I picked up with honour & love...... Your strength & courage gave me the desire to fight back & win........

Special Lady in my heart, where you will remain until it is my turn to make the crossing..... Until then I look forward to hearing of the Devil himself demanding political asylum at the gates of S.A.

God bless my Love

Damn Catherine, I just went back and read more of the posts. My heart is breaking.

I'll tell you what. I don't know where you are going but I am pretty sure that Spike will be there to meet you. He's tall and handsome with a smile on his face. You can't miss him. You are going to love him. He was always optimistic and upbeat like you. I think the two of you will cut a fine swath through that place. He was a very good sailor so stick with him, do the bow for him or stick with the mainsheet. He's not a yeller.

Do me a favor and say hi to him from his Dad.

I'll miss you Catherine.

Dammit, I was crying enough before this. No wonder your boats are beautiful Bob.

plus way, way more than I can count.

I'll let Dylan say it for me, my own voice a bit broken now'

And Death Shall Have No Dominion

And death shall have no dominion.

Dead mean naked they shall be one

With the man in the wind and the west moon;

When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone,

They shall have stars at elbow and foot;

Though they go mad they shall be sane,

Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again;

Though lovers be lost love shall not;

And death shall have no dominion.

And death shall have no dominion.

Under the windings of the sea

They lying long shall not die windily;

Twisting on racks when sinews give way,

Strapped to a wheel, yet they shall not break;

Faith in their hands shall snap in two,

And the unicorn evils run them through;

Split all ends up they shan't crack;

And death shall have no dominion.

And death shall have no dominion.

No more may gulls cry at their ears

Or waves break loud on the seashores;

Where blew a flower may a flower no more

Lift its head to the blows of the rain;

Though they be mad and dead as nails,

Heads of the characters hammer through daisies;

Break in the sun till the sun breaks down,

And death shall have no dominion.

Hey Y'all!

Wow! once again, thanks for all the support and deep love. Its a hard time but you've all made it full of love and praises....

Last night I went up to visit with wondermutt Zeke and we had a nice chill with her outside under the stars and planets. Jupiter, Venus, Mars.... Purty.

Cath was very excited and happy to see and pet mr muttley and he was happy to see her and he let out quite a few uncharacteristic howls. Deep and soulful. It was awesome.

We went back upstairs and listened to a few dead songs off youtube. Stella Blue, Brokedown Palace and Box of Rain.

I left her in the capable hands of her mom and sis and came home and slept for 11 hours and still wanting/needing more.

Cath has been open to seeing folks so if ya wanna swing by its cool, but be prepared to have to wait down the hall while she preps, mentally emotionally, whatever...

She DID say she wants to see people tho....

This morning she met with one of her good poet pals Dennis Sullivan. They went thru alot of her work and chose pieces for publication in a book that Dennis will compile. Her sister tells me that really reminded her who she is and was also a great cathartic process.

She is planning a party to be thrown in her honor but yesterday she decided she'd like to be there for it. Sort of like a 'living funeral' where the honoree gets to hear all the wonderful things people say about them. I guess thats happening here a bit already. I agree its fucked up to eulogize prematurely but should we ever wait to tell anyone how awesome we think they are? Hell NO!!

Yeah, so I dont know what else to say but thanks to all of you. Elle yer bewb is, as someone noted, not only gorgeous but a most fitting tribute! Thanks for that! : )

Sol, thanks for making the masses aware of our current situation. I couldnt quite find the words and hadnt gotten the 'all clear' go ahead from MSG yet. I'm so glad she gave you the word. One of the many things I have learned in the past 6 months here is let people tell their own story in their own time. Whew. Again, very glad she wants everyone on the same page now.

Maybe I am in denial but since it has been my job here for half a year to be 'mr positive' I still refuse to believe all hope is gone. Expect Miracles. Why the fuck not??

I cant begin to tell you how exhausting this is for all of us. Bob, Dan and so many of you know exactly what I'm talking about. I just need to say thanks again tho bcuz whenever we needed strength, Y'all have been there.

Color me eternally grateful

talk soon

My grandfather was under hospice care from April 2010 to Jan 2011, up and around for most of it. He was 95 and just as full of life as Catherine is. By no means should this development be the signal to stop living your life and it's good to hear that you haven't.

I propose a SA roadtrip to this bash-tival.Please tell us when it is Dan, I'll move heaven and earth to be there.

Hi Cathrine,

This is my first post to this thread, although I admit that I have been following your story from the beginning.

I hope that you realize that for every person that has posted to this thread, I'm sure that there are another 20 or 30 more that are following your incredible story, and have stayed in the shadows as they just don't know what to say. And, I hope you take comfort in knowing that each and every one of us is preying for you in our own personal way.

Sending you nothing but positive energy form the Left Coast.

Catherine,

You pack as much into as few words as anyone on SA.

I thought this paragraph was so good that I read it out aloud to my dear friend (and ex wife) K who had a drawn out fight with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma this past 6 months.

Her response:

"Damn right. I don't know yet, if I have three months, three years or thirty years. But nor do you (she was referring to me). Catherine is right, we are all on the same path, the same thing is going to happen to all of us, so savor the now. Every day. "

While we have the now. Every day is a new day with new hope for the day.

Today, I cancelled my business plans for Monday. Today I called up and bought tickets for Bruce Springsteen and I'm pulling my boy out of school on Monday and he's going to play hookey and go see some old time rock n roll with his old man. If the school complains, I'm going to tell them that is is the first of many living funerals!

If anyone here has been promising yourself that one year you will get around to that regatta you always wanted to sail, but you know, work and other commitments keep getting in the way. You know what advice you would get from MSG don't you?

Hi Catherine, You need a miracle right now, and here's where you can find it. The Gerson Institute in San Diego. The Institute is run by Charlotte Gerson, using an all natural cancer therapy developed by her father, Dr. Max Gerson in 1938. Hundreds of so called "terminal " cancer patients have been cured using this therapy. The Gerson Institute has a clinic in Tiajuana, Mexico, because curing cancer using organic fruits and vegetables is against the law in the United States. There is a documentary online called "The Gerson Miracle", it's the story of Dr. Gerson and his record of curing cancer. Also on youtube, there's a documentary called "Run From The Cure", which is the story of Mr. Rick Simmons. Mr. Simmons cured "terminal" cancer using THC, my personal favorite cancer cure. Traditional medicine has done what they can, and you're lucky to have survived that process. I encourage you to contact the Gerson Institute ASAP, they can help you heal and strengthen your body, so that you can fight off this curable condition. Judging by the outpouring of sentiment here on the Sailing Anarchy site, your's is a life well worth saving. The Gerson Institute has hundreds of documented cases of patients who have lived twenty or more healthy years beyond a "terminal" diagnosis from corporate American medicine. All your friends in sailing are supporting you in this effort, your healing and return to a healthy vibrant life will inform, and inspire all of us! The idea of a big party is always a great idea, let's have one that celebrates the miracle of your continuing life under sail. I'll look forward to seeing you back on the foredeck!

Wishing you Love, Great Health, and Fair Winds!

Captain Ron

"Living Funeral" Brilliant! Traditional wakes and funerals suck. I will be there!!

PLEASE make it no later than Apr 12, when I have to hit the road for Charleston RW. Or after Apr 25 when I get back.

Thinking seriously of the pros and cons of bringing the Pebble. Would love for he and Catherine to meet. OTOH, a 6 y.o. in the midst of what is sure to be a bunch of anarchistic drunken debauchery? What do you think Catherine? Say the word, if you want to meet him, it will happen.

Who wants to carpool from the Boston area?

Last night I sat on the deck in Marblehead in shorts and flip flops, drinking a glass of port, smoking a Cuban cigar, watching the stars twinkle overhead and the lighted bouys twinkle on the water, listening to the waves lap gently on the rocks. Peaceful, magical moment. Was thinking of you C. This morning I started my day in similar fashion, sitting in the same spot, drinking my post-workout protein shake, watching the dawn break over the Atlantic. It was particularly beautiful and poignant, again thinking of you. The sky grew brighter and brighter, until the sun rose brilliantly out of the sea. It shone gloriously for a few minutes, before disappearing behind the cloud cover. The day grew warmer and brighter though the sun were no longer visible, as its light continued to shine strongly behind the clouds. It really struck me how that hour was an apt metaphor for our lives- The glorious anticipation, the arrival and all too short time we have to shine, the passing behind the clouds. Yet even after we're no longer visible, our light continues to shine and warm the world. In the end I was smiling.

You go girl. Time to put my new main sheet on the boat. Sheet in and take those waves head on. Calm weather does not make a good sailor challenging weather does. A simple life does not build strong character, challenges do. That's why your such a strong and beautiful person. Keep fighting and know we are there to fight with and for you.

Too much eulogy and good byes here folks! I am still here and i refuse to let this take me. There is hope and what is happening to me, as frightening and heart breaking as it is, is what happens to all of us : NO ONE knows when there time is up. All we have is the NOW.

Live loud MSG - piss anybody off that you want to, and know that there are very few people on this world that have as much of a rowdy crew at their beck and call to cause mayhem and madness if instructed.

Miracles can and do happen. We all know of examples of them.

In looking through some old photos recently, came across one of me signing your ass in Sloppy Joe's. Good times...

Kick ass, my girl.

You made me giggle and think of Monty Python "Just a flesh wound. "

Glad to hear the fighting attitude.

Howdy,

Point taken - People, our voice of reason has once again prevailed.

The time is indeed now and of course in the future has well.

Good for you....I have Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy and in the last year have had 2 MI's, a Stroke and 2 heart surgeries. Now on the transplant list, and the doctors et al keep telling me to slow down, take it easy, you won't survive the next one etc etc... Well, my respond is this: to buy a bigger boat, bugger off to the bahamas for a couple of months and to hell with the naysayers. If I have 1 day, 1 Week, 1 year or 100 left, I will live each one as if it was any other day. If I wake up in the morning stretch out my arms and I can't feel a box on both sides, it's going to be a good day. Stay strong, live and love like there is no tomorrow and rest assured that there is a community that will return the favour.

I can't tell you how much in awe I am of your courage...

I've been sitting around since yesterday when I read all this, trying to come up with something profound to say, but I'm too gutted, I got nothing.

I'll let this guy say it for me...

No surprise to see who is lifting everyone up. You rock baby.

I might be out of my league posting in this thread but I'm one of your many, many silent fans and this struck me as appropriate.

We've got a few sailing trophies around the house but the one I'm most proud of we earned the hard way.

Monhegan 2003 was a drifter like no other. After a 1:00 PM start we had made 6.5 miles by 9:00 PM and were in the middle of the Portland ME shipping channel about to be run down by a tanker. We had no steerage so we took our position and time and fired up the engine, got out of the way,watched the tanker go by in the dark fog, and returned to the same spot and parked (there was a LONG conversation with the race committee and judges and a change to subsequent SIs for the race as a result).The boat next to us gave up at that point, one of the last ones out there with us as most of the fleet had been drinking for hours by then, but we said "Let's just go til 10:00 and if we're still sitting here we'll bag it". Well, 10:00 came and we were flying at 2 knots. After 9 hours of drifting backwards and sideways 2 knots is making huge progress.

We still had 60 plus miles to go and 2 knots calculates to a pretty long race so we said "Lets just make the next mark (about 10 miles) and if we're still doing 2 knots we'll call that the finish". Well, we (actually I since I was the only one awake) rounded that mark around 1:00 AM, came to a close reach and enjoyed a perfect starlit night at full hullspeed for 25 amazing miles. The next mark brought sunrise, a reef and screaming beam reach all the way to the finish.

We took a first and enjoyed one of the best sails of our lives.

Never, never, never, never give up!!!!!! Little achievable goals get you through the tough parts and give you a feeling of accomplishment. Make up your own rules, the rest of the world will catch up. The next mark might bring you the best sail of your life so stick with it, you sitll have lots of racing ahead of you. There are a lot more of us out here rooting for you than you can possibley imagine.

I'm not very good with the written word. Hopefully my Jesuit and Franciscan education will kick in. There's a lot of static (distractions) around us at all times. You're compelling story humanizes who and what you are and brings us all down to Earth. Thank you for being you and bringing us all together. Your story is about love of life. Stay strong and keep up the good work. You are in my prayers.

Catherine,

I have not been lurking much here lately and this thread was not something I was prepared to find. All I can say is may each day bring you hope and sunshine. You provided inspiration and support to us for our friend Wendy when we thought all was lost after her Aneurysm. I want to return it all to you because I know All Is NOT lost. Hope is eternal! Thank you for all your inspiration and may you continue to inspire us all. Sail on.

Nancy

Catherine:

I can't come to the party but I'd like to buy a round of beers. Is there some way I can do that?

Maybe if there is a way some of the other SA'ers can contribute too.

Glad to see you posting again. Enjoy some sunshine today. It's going to be beautiful in the PNW. Unfortimnately that means I have to mow the lawn.

Quite right. This is no time to let down the standards of our punctuation, grammar and spelling.

Are Bow girl and DoRag one and the same? No. It can't be, because only girls use emoticons.

Lovely morning, fresh start to a fresh day. Hope its a good one for Catherine.

Strength of spirit, courage and determination should not be discounted. She has an abundance of all three.

GO THE CATHERINE. You are so much more than you give yourself credit for. You may have 'shrunk' on the outside, but your huge heart and that flash of 'bring it!' In your eyes would intimidate me, were I cancer.

Your terms.

I love you. Grace and Dignity.

So very sorry to be reading this from the front page this morning. I will ironically be at a fundraiser this evening for a Susan B Komen 3 Day Walk team that I have supported over the last number of years. My contribution tonight will be honoring Catherine/Mainsheetgirl and your fight. This disease took my most favorite gal from me years ago, and now another. Keep up the good fight! I love the pic of your friend's bewb in tribute to you and will show that in honor to you and all who are fighting for the great day we eradicate this. Your posts and stories will me missed by so many. Keep smiling!
