      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Sailing Anarchists Affected by Cancer

Catherine, We were out on the water today at Chew Valley Lake, south of Bristol UK. It was champagne sailing. As I trimmed the main i was thinking of you. We sailed in the NOW. Appreciating every puff and sparkle of sunshine on the water. We thank you for reminding us to do this.

I hope you and Dan had a good day too.

Stay strong Catherine.

Chris

Catherine, I really suck at dealing with these kinds of topics.... but I sincerely wish you fair winds and an end to your pain and suffering. I lost my father to cancer and my only consolation in losing him was that he was a good man and he was in a FAR better place.

I don't know what awaits us beyoned this life, but I suspect in your case there will be lots of sharpies, copious amounts of adult beverages and you flashing your tits will always appreciated. Unfortunately I don't know you all that well - but I suspect you were one of the few of us here on earth who lived life to the fullest. There's a lesson there for all of us....

You are one of the "good ones" Catherine. Be safe and be well in your journey.

I truly hate those smiley face emoticon thingies but in this case smiley face wins.

Excellent post.

And lest we forget, another shout out to Dan for all the emotional and physical energies he has dedicated to Lady C. An example for us all in the pay forward game. It does matter.

Dan, and all of MSG's family, are truly amazing strong kind hospitable welcoming people.

Redboat is absolutely correct - the support-team is crucial and Catherine has a great one.

They are all bouyed by the love and support they read from everyone here...and quite honestly they're blown away by it. That is good, strong medicine along with all of the positive energy that flows from here.

GO THE CATHERINE!

Hey ya, rather than a whole bunch of eulogies, think of it as a whole bunch of insurance. You now have all you need to post in any "discussion" thread and if anybody starts slinging shit you can now quote right back at them what they really think of you.

I love you. Grace and Dignity.

Yeah! ^ What Carina said ^

Hugs from Colorado today. I went up to the top of Pikes Peak yesterday (14,110') on a cog railway, with a dear friend who is also a cancer survivor. MS fatigue kept me from trying to climb it, but if you can bag a Colorado 14er, sometimes it's worth it no matter how you get there. Plus, they have the most amazing donuts at the top. (Seriously!) The view from the summit was amazing, even if the air was a bit thin. I'm pretty sure I could see Albany from there, so I sent you some most excellent good vibes Karma, and my friend did as well. Keep smiling, darlin'

:)

There's a comfort in this thread. A reminder that no one is alone, that life is still beautiful and that we all go on to our next adventure. We're all part of the great circle of life. No one's life is any greater or any less than any other. Remember to tell those you love that you love them, to take things one day or sometimes just one hour at a time, that there is strength and courage in numbers and that we all get a lifetime here.

Make it nice. Make it count. Remember to smile, it makes the world a better place.

To those fighting cancer and to those whose loved ones are touched by it, may we all continue to thrive and survive.

Peace.

I was reading this thread from the beginning and found this post. Catherine, you have been such a supporter of those affected by this damn fucking disease for such a long time. It is my sincere hope, prayer, and wish upon a star that you become one of the ones who defy the odds.

I go away for a week and this is what I come back to?

Catherine: I do have some pics I took of frogs. I'll send them to you tonight when I get home from work.

Recently I was thinking about all the friends, real and imaginary, (IE internet friends) that I've lost and since I just bought a boat I thought I would take them all sailing w/ me by posting their name and a pic in my logbook.

Well guess what Catherine? YOU ARE NOT going in that logbook yet! So hang in there.

If there is ever a doubt that Catherine should go to Heaven, St Peter need only read this thread. You are so loved that it would be selfish of Him to take you from us too soon. There is too much yet to do.

Thought we all needed a little Jimmy V:

" During his speech the teleprompter stated that he had 30 seconds left, to which Valvano responded, "They got that screen up there flashing 30 seconds, like I care about that screen. I got tumors all over my body and I'm worried about some guy in the back going 30 seconds." His speech included this statement:

To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.

Valvano's ESPY acceptance speech became legendary, and he closed by saying, "Cancer can take away all of my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever. I thank you and God bless you all."

The sun came out! I walked the dogs. I have a tough week ahead of me. It's the anniversary of Spike's death. Not sure how I'm going to handle it. It does help to know that you are still fighting the battle. I know it's hard. People say, "Oh, I can't imagine." I can. I think. But I kind of enjoy being a part of your cheer leading team. You beat this thing. If I had pom poms and a tutu I'd put it on but not sure if you'd want to see that picture. Beat the cancer then we can all celebrate. I like saying "good morning" to you. Enough of good byes, indeed. No one has left. The odds may not be the best, but then... I bet that probably 90%+ of all those who entered WTC on 9/11 had all the odds of making it through the day, and many of them had friends & family in MSG situation, facing lousy odds... Guess what? The odds fooled them all, I am sure many of those lousy" odds are still around, while the rest...

I am not afraid to say goodbye today, because I know that, if we both live to see tomorrow, we can say hello again.

Dear Catherine: My personal belief is that the only thing that remains after this is done, is what we've left behind in the hearts of others. I've never met you in person; I've only talked to you on the phone maybe twice; and yet you've brought something positive to my life. I may be only carrying a tiny speck of you, but I'll carry it with honor.

And I'll carry a Sharpie marker, too, just in case we both live long enough to meet in person....

It's a lovely autumn Wednesday afternoon here in Melbourne and I am going sailing. Light warm breeze, flat water, a few cold tinnies and some great tunes on the stereo. Wanna come?

You'll be there with me anyway.

Simon

Hi Catherine, take no notice of these sanctimonious land-lubbers. Keep giving those cancer cells hell. I hope you'll like this one;

O Lord above, send down a dove

With wings as sharp as razors

To cut the throats of them there blokes

What sells bad beer to sailors.

Best wishes from the Sovereigns.
