      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Nicely organised program so far.

Deliver boat, fit keel, stand rig, launch, go sailing.... click click click. The way it should be.

Very interesting "V" bow sections rather than normal "U" sections.

This should make her quite a weapon upwind in chop.

A BEAUTIFUL yacht.

I am totally envious.

There was a definite decision to profile the bow to better deal with the 'Port Phillip Chop'.

Hull form inspiration from Artemis and Vincitore.

SM11 Launched.

TBG. Boat looked awesome from beach road this afternoon. Motoring north the red topsides stood out . When it turned left and went west, it went into stealth mode with the black transom. Well done Steve Campbell on the build.

Great IRC fleet now in Port Philip, however its very conspicuous that not many of them are doing the northern regattas (Whitsundays) this year. Maybe the financial crisis is hurting more than they are saying !!

Maybe they want to learn which strings to pull first before they go up there. It's early days on the entry list anyway, plenty of time still left to enter.

Agree with the above.

I could easily see the red topsides from the SYC outer southerly mark.

A pity there was very little breeze for the first sail, but she looks fantastic.

Anyone know if Scarlett is lining up for ORCV Winter Series next weekend?

Can't see their IRC rating through as yet on RORC, not an entry on ORCV site (yet?).

Some interesting performances to watch next weekend, particularly for new (or modified) boats:

- Calm vs other Div 0's entered (Audi, Goldfinger, XLR8, Extasea, Chutzpah)

- Audi Centre (Flirt) vs Calm - will the mods to Audi's keel improve performance?

- Veloce vs rest of the fleet, including the Div 0's (eg Chutzpah, Extasea!).

- Wicked (Bene F40) Vs Bene F45's (Schuss entered, but can't see Reverie) & the S/38's

- Battle of Sydney 38's (Challenge, Chainsaw, 38 South, Audacious)

Also interesting that a number of IRC entrants are not yet showing on the RORC site as having valid / re-validated IRC certs. No result if no cert?

One of the more interesting match ups may well be SOIREE BLEU (new A40) against WICKED (Benny First 40).

Why? Soiree Blue is not a "new model" Arch 40 but is the old A-40 Sandgroper with a new name and owner/crew moving up from a Noelex 30! It has always struggled to raise itself above mediocrity in the past so is unlikely to find sudden new pace in their first outing. Wicked 'should' be heaps quicker but had better hope for some breeze coz she isn't exactly setting the world on fire in the light stuff so far. See Wicked results at: http://syc.com.au/raceresults/2009/kb/wstix_09/series.htm

But then, you knew that

Big step up from a Noelex 30 to the A-40. Nice choice for an upgrade though. This season will be an interesting one, and possibly the biggest change in fleet structure as far as boat size is concerned for some time.

If rumours are right, two owners of current Div 0 boats are about to, or have, placed orders for bigger boats. The Dolly may well have a sister or two.

There WAS a rumour a couple of months back regarding Cougar's owner looking at Limit. I believe that is a no-go.

A problem with going bigger is depth. Scarlett Runner I believe has a draft of 3.7m. Post dredging, SYC marina has a low tide depth of 3.6m approx. so there may need to be some pre-race start scrubbing of the bulb occassionally!

Not this little black duck! IMS (even re-badged as ORC) should be left dead and buried IMHO.

Would only re-consider (reluctantly) if and when ORC is introduced to the racing here in Melbourne as the major rating system.

not at the proposed cost, which IIRC was $1000's

Glen Stanaway from YA quoted the following for us here in Hobart:

"$450 ORCi Certificate (rating for scoring)

$270 ORCc Certificate (rating for scoring)

$180 Stability Data Sheet (for demonstration of resistance to capsize only)

$180 Performance Package (for performance targets)

Note that all prices are plus GST, and may be subject to change."

If anyone wants to see a sample of each certificate PM me and I'll forward the email.

Sounds like the local builder will be a busy boy when all these new boats start production.

Scarlett Runner & Calm - new boats for their respective owners.... That leaves Audi/Flirt.... Wouldn't it be cheaper to pay someone capable to drive a pretty good boat than buy a new one? Just a thought...

Did Calm go out today ? Didn't appear anywhere in the results.

Yep - were out there, and doing very nicely... until the last leeward mark when (rumour has it) the jib blew out of the track, and it was game-over and they went home.

A summary from today's racing what I saw.

- Calm looked too have all the Div 0's other than Audi Melbourne's measure. Not bad for the first hit out. Nice to see Pete Williams out sailing with his old man. Will no doubt get better.

- Audi Melbourne seemed a shitload better. Shogun well in her wake. In touch with Calm until they pulled out. You'd think they also would get better once they get used to the major changes.

- Veloce had to go back at the start. Won't do any good if you do that. Looks nice on the water though.

- Wicked went very well. Had all the 38's covered other than Challenge. Should also get better as time goes on.

- Lou and the boys handed out yet another lesson to the other 38s. Can they possibly get any better??

Did anyone notice the previous Qantum Sail makers van turn up at the new Scarlet Runner with a new name on the van (EVOLUTION SAILS)? Whats going on here, has this sail maker parted ways with Qantum?

Qantum is giving North great competition, look at the TP52 and recently won the F40 worlds....

First, the traditional welcome to SA..... f*ck off newbie!

Rumour heard was that the Qantum franchise only had a fixed period, and when it came time to renew (now-ish), the terms of the renewal did not suit many of the existing franchisees... thus the move to Evolution. I don't think this is limited to Melbourne.

Stay tuned as a Q salesman knocks on your door at 8.00pm at night when your putting the kids to bed, and tries to sell you a Q sail made in China that turns up in a box in six weeks. Open ya box and find that the leach tape is missing. Sorry say's the salesman if you can find him. I'll send that right back to China and fix it asap. Six weeks later the wrong box arrives. Sorry mate I'll get on to that straight away as he is about play the 19th,hole at Cape Schanck.

This is the new direction that Quantum in the states wanted your ex local Q lofts to operate. A sewing machine in a shed in the suburbs for after sales service.

Good on the local OZ Q lofts for having the common sense to standup and be loyal to their customer base.

And by the way Doug I hate Amway salesman too

I had the good fortune to be able to take my family out on a power boat yesterday to watch the ORCV Winter Series racing. Thanks to my good friendJohn Willett for the use of his lovely Back Cove 29 "Saga Blue" for the occasion. Nothing goes to windward in a brisk 20 knot Port Phillip south westerly like 315 HP!

I snapped off a couple of hundred photos to add to my collection and I am pleased to now be able to share some of them with fellow Anarchists. PM me if you want higher res copies or ask if I have some of your boat.

Better weather than last Wednesday eh?

Check out the backgrounds in the photos - ranged from very grey to very blue and back again. Breeze shifted south west to west and back again, up to 18 kts and down to about 7, choppy seas to flat and back again, all pretty normal for down here- makes for better sailors.

PS: no problems with ferries...

Any thoughts on when the Melbourne boats are heading to Sydney for the Southport race? Looking forward to having a gander whilst they're parked at the CYCA...

Mex

Most boats heading out this weekend or maybe a bit later. SR will be leaving later in the week.

You delivering up this year Andy? Looking forward to drinkies with a few "old boys". I'm in Cairns right now but probably heading back to Airlie in a few days - ENE on the cards for a bit so I'll take it.

The bar at the marina is open now. See you there no doubt. PS Don't bring the bloody swine flu with you. It's not here yet.

G'day Diz, I see you lurking

Should be in Mackay inearly August.

Noticed a few more IRC ratings through now for the Melbourne Fleet:

Reverie - Bene First 45 - down from 1.123 last year to 1.120. Was already super-competitive last year, so interesting to see what the drop will do. Noted big difference to sister-ship Schuss @ 1.125.

Shogun - 1.313. No change from last year

NEW Scarlett Runner: 1.356. Compare to Calm (1.358) , Cougar II (1.350 - up slightly from last year's 1.348), L/Doll (1.396 - up slightly from last year's 1.394).

NEW Veloce: 1.222. Hard to judge performance against this rating yet.

Shamrock - 1.281. Now puts them well-under sistership XLR8 at 1.301.

Cougar is due out tomorrow in Race 2 of the ORCV Winter Series. Will be interesting to see how the Calm boys go against the best after only a sail or 2.

ORCV Race 2 was an interesting day today with winds around 18-25 knots, flat seas, OCS's, gear problems, chinese gybes and cool weather to-boot.

At the front end the TP52s Calm and Cougar, and Audi Melbourne, were fighting it out, with the handicap honours easily going to Audi Melbourne in the end. Whatever they have done to that boat, it sure seems to have worked with it pacing with the TPs all day.

A great result for the guys on Veloce with a 2nd overall, with Calm 3rd. Veloce looks like she could be a very competitive boat come the summer and the Calm guys will be better for the outing.

Back in the fleet the 38s seemed to have a bit on with their masthead kites and the Wicked guys seemed to dislike the stronger breeze a little.

All-in-all a nice winter's race day in Melbourne.

ORCV race 2 - wind and flat conditions suited the big light planning IRC boats, while the other heavier IRC machines struggled down wind with a few wobbles! Great sailing conditions!

When will the ORCV get rid of triangles? It is so much fun playing follow the leader, and of course it is such a tactical challenge to follow the boat in front, me thinks not. Sunday would have been a perfect day to run 2 windward - leewards. The breeze was fairly constant in direction, some minor variations early on. As was the case on Sunday a small change in wind direction ends up with a 2 sail reach to one of the marks with a triangle. For god sake let the triangle go the same way as short keels, even shorter rudders and IOR bumps and let it die!
