Brian Weslake

Aussie dream team

Recommended Posts

Due to the boom in resources Australia and W.A. in particular are doing very well financially. Even Bondy looks set to re-enter the Billionaire stakes again soon, so the chances of convincing him or some other well heeled entrepreneur to fund an AC challenge are looking up.

If Australia was able to put together a team for the AC, who would you pick from the local talent to be included? Some obvious choices, mainly at the top of the food chain, are -

CEO

Only one man for the job, Glen Bourke. Fabulous sailor, intelligent, meticulous with tremendous experience gained from running the Volvo Race.

General Manager/Design Team head

Grant Simmer. Alinghi's best kept secret.

Sailing Team Manager

Peter Gilmour. Tons of experience.

Helmsman

James Spithill.

Traveller/windspotter.

Adam Beashel.

Mainsheet

Col Beashel. AII crew, 6 times Olympian, exceptional sailor.

Builder

John McConaghy

Any suggestions for the other spots, both on the water and on the design team?

michel Blackburn would have to get a place on the sailing team. What about Chris Nicolson. Mark Bradford is a Brisbane sailmaker who was with Larry this time around as a headsail trimmer. Rowers for the grinders

Will McCarthy, Mark McTeigue, Paul McKenzie, Anthony Nossiter, Mark Bradford, Paul Westfield, Peter Merrington, Glenn Antrill all have current experience and are either racing or just completed.

Tons more but the big call is Grunter as BW already pointed out. Get him and let him choose who he wants where. He knows how to structure and run a winning effort. The talent pool of sailors, builders, sailmakers we have is only matched by the Kiwis.

Absolutely. I think Bourkey is a pretty key component as well, you need a front man who handles the public side of things, particularly fundraising and PR, to take the pressure off the guys doing the designing and sailing. Glen would be the perfect man for the job.

Trimmer: Noel Drennan aka Nitro - if you can get him away from the Ericcson VOR tilt.

Media Manager: Rob Mundle (settle guys, only joking :lol::lol: )

Design Team: Al Cawardine, John Swarbrick, Ian Burns

Sailing Coach: Fletch - none better!

Head Strategist: Gybeset; apparently he knows everything there is to know about sailing so why look any further?

Thumbs up to the team selection. With Simmer and Gilmour and Burns involved youd think we'd have a competitive design so it all comes down to the money. For Aussie syndicate owners there isn't a big list to choose from and I don't believe you'd be able to raise the money via sponsors alone, there just isn't enough in it for them. 'There's no doubting our home grown ability, afterall we were the 1st country to win the cup, however if the Kiwis can fund a campaign why not Australia..? Don't see it happening too soon, the money is the issue.

And I think that's all the more reason why the Cup needs to come down Under: it makes challenging all the more affordable.

Yeah McConaghy didn't they build Team China boat? :-)

Iain Smith to project manage the build

High Tower to run the pit

Cocko to manage the sail programme but would give him a look at the tic tac spot (he mananges to make Croaky look half decent)

Dick Parker to run the loft and design fast downwind fruit

Adrienne Cahalan to run the nav

Clouds on weather

nearly all the crew on WOX1 and Alfa are aussie's so filing the middle of the boat shouldn't be too hard - might need to look further afield for people who remember what a pedestal does.

Aus should use an all American team thereby freeing up good Aus sailors to drive and crew an Amercian challenge.

For this correspondent Rob Brown would add substantial depth to an Australian tilt at the AC Windmill.

Good choice, she is a spunk. Not sure what her role would be however.

For the non-Australians in the crowd that dont understand the reference, see -

She could get tired....and you know...be team morale oficer. Wouldn't be the first time she felt a little rooted.

OK, How about we put together an Aussie SA AC team..! How many Aussie members does SA have, if you had 5,000 members we would only need to put $5000 in each and that would give us $25 Million to start off with (Based on campaigning in NZ, forget Europe). We then get some sponsors, Johny Bertrand tells me thats easy.. Bondy kicks in some dirty laundry and we're away! Whose in..???

LOL....

Those kids off the '7' skiff were pretty shit hot junior match racers and turned up at the front of the 18 fleet pretty quickly. You definitely need some young whipping boys to keep the hull polished.

Kaiko was tied up in a couple of campaigns when the americans had a couple of boats trying for the cup.

Now he is working for himself in Freo.

Wharro doesnt have any money, every time he does something on his boats he has to mortgage his house.

Rupert Murdoch bought a 183' yacht twelve months ago, I reckon he could chip some coin in.

James Packer would get my vote for money burner, just got a stack of cash and has a family history of cup challenges (that happened to skip one boring generation).

James should be pressed into the cup, he and locky murdock could go into business together again this time with no expectations of making money
