      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

let's see what happens, Fins. They're pretty freaking small - i don't think the issue is the size of the screen - it's everyone clicking "refresh!"

BH lost a couple of seconds there, we're hanging out by the finish and letting them go up the course without buzzing along.

Didn't he learn from when he was with the girls on A3... did the same thing then as he appears to be doing now!

DD was on Challenge '88 in 1988 and failed to cover on the 1st leg of the last race and found himself 2 minute behind at the WM. Fortunately the he was able to come from behind and pull it out. Wally was there too. Ask Stu Argo about it and he will tell you a funny story about what he told DD after that 1st leg.

Honour is ahead by just under 20 seconds at the final WW mark - that's a loss of 10 or so from the bottom. Can Dave and Wally get that pig back down faster than the folks whose heads aren't attached to their necks?

Cheers and horns for Alex Alphabet and the Honourable bunch. Sailed a great race, and the RC is working the course already. They're pushing for three today, no doubt about that.

If anyone has a good answer to my question, I'll take back everything I've said about BH and his apparent stupidity.

I know one thing, match racing is a team sport and last time I checked BH is/was but one member of Team HB. The guys helming are amateurs and while experienced they are still weekend warriors. They don't get paid to sail. They pay. Their responsibility is to make the boat go as fast as their ability will allow and to act on the information fed from the pro tactician and main trimmer.

Who knows why a boat splits? Shift, pressure, a bad wave so it's slow to tack and cover, etc... It happens.

I'm always amazed how calls that seem so apparent to those in a coach boat or an actual armchair really aren't so glaringly apparent while on the water actually racing.

Heartbreaker gets about a half-boatlength lead at the start by catching a shift that Honour seemed to miss. Some really close-in maneuvring, with no team getting a huge advantage until 5 seconds before the gun. Good, solid match racing start by BH.

Meanwhile, the conventional wisdom - that BH would suffer during the starts, and that the RCYC would suffer from boatspeed, seems to not be the case. Quite the opposite, actually.

Wind is getting really shift, possibly before the forecast backing comes in...

He's the checkwriting member of a team that's now fucked this up at least twice in the last three Canada's Cups, with at least two different tacticians, and one of those fuck-ups cost the U.S. (and Bayview) the Cup. Whether the fuck up is the tactician's fault or not, how many times do you have to make a mistake before you cease from making it again?

Okay, instead of "BH is stupid and you fix that," "DD is stupid and you can't fix it."

Rant over. It's obvious my under-developed Detroit sized brain can't comprehend the overwhelming logic and intelligence of Western Michigan's Golden Child Bob Hughes and Dave "Let me fuck this up one more time" Dellenbaugh.

Final Edit: I just want to see the US win this thing back. Go the Heartbreaker.

Well, the RC has reset to 300, there's the left shift. I just spoke to Jerry from IonEarth at length. He's far more frustrated than we are. Essentially, the units that are sending the data up to the Iridium system are sending data calibrated to the West Coast. The only way to fix it is to remove all the units from the boats and marks, plug them into a computer, reprogram them, and recalibrate them. That would obviously preclude any more tracking today. Instead, his techs (two or three of them now) are writing a program to translate what the units are saying into something that the web browsers will accept. That's how I understand it anyway.

The other reason that we can't get the units off is that we don't want to - they are still recording and sending information, just not what the browser and the MS world interface can read. That information will be translated later into recorded races, and we should have the whole thing available by tonight. Fingers crossed...

Jerry is cool, his sis-in-law is an SA lurker than many of y'all know, and he's a TC dude with a geeky mind and a love for being outdoors. Let's cut him some slack - when you see how well it works, and how small these fucking things are, you'll understand why I'm so gung-ho on it.

That, and he's got them on all the Iditarod sleds...and you know how I like pups.

It's cool FastrSailr. That's the kind of encouragement that works. In his speech last night BH joked that he will have to join the RCYC if he doesn't win on this his third try.

It seems he's wise to the sort of homecoming another loss would bring. That ain't stupidity.

So, I had a chance to sit with Peter Huston on the little launch out here. Peter is almost as prolific a writer as I am now, the difference is that he's been a force for change in racing for ages and ages. I have a lot of respect for Peter, even if he does come up with some off the wall ideas from time to time. He's the kind of dude who knows pretty precisely what's wrong with many of the systems that control and direct yacht racing, but he also knows the players and the politics, and often, just why things won't change.

But he keeps trying and trying...out of his little Buffalo Canoe Shack or whatever its called, he's trying.

Peter and a handful of others, including BYC's John Barbour, I think - are all here to watch the racing, and to discuss the future of the CanCup. We were chatting about how to reduce costs, and of course, he reads SA liberally. We both think that the 36.7 is a ridiculous boat for the CC.

Bring on the MUMM 30. Shit, call it the GL30!!

"Evergreen" was one of the last custom boats, right? That kind of went away with the two-tonner rule, I think. Custom boats would be worse than Farr 40s as far as expense -- this is supposed to be semi-amateur, not a war of wallets...

Anyhow, what's popular in the Great Lakes, not as expensive as an F40, maneuverable for match racing, but goes like hell? How about Sharks? (Kidding.) Do you save much by looking at say a 36-footer vs a 40? Where's the real expense in a CC effort -- sails, boat(s) or people?

Clean, Videos are great but the wizzing sound of the wind on you cam mike sucks. Get a piece of foamy and tape it over it so we can hear you talk smack!

LZ

That's not the wind. That's my dick dragging in the water.

Clean - How about some details for us poor saps sitting in our cubes!

Something like

"Heartbreaker has a 20sec. lead at the last windward mark.

They do a gybe set at the mark

go to the right side of the course

it paid off last time/ it's favored/ the breeze is stronger

they gybed back to cover their competition!

they gybed back again to keep the finish line between them and the Canadian boat.

They're playing all the shifts and puffs perfectly down the course

Oh, no - they sailed into a hole and where passed in the last hundred yards!"

Give us some "LUV" brother.

5D

Time to stop dragging and wheel it in. We can't hear you talk!

Hate to see BH behind but new they would have a hard time with Gavin being on Honour. Hes awesome and will not give you an inch. BH and DD better step up the game a few notches.

And don't discount it... we may just have a Challenge (COR) letter ready in a back pocket somewhere in TO, just in case...

Just Talked to J.M. at ionearth. Aquiring data on the boats. Glitch in the up-lode. Will be able to do replays of all races tonight. Should be fixed by morning. Please be patient. I have seen this stuff work. It is awesome!

Way to go Honour. My shoulder is happy.

Keep it rollin'....

BTW: The boat name 'Honour' is spelled incorrectly on the IonEarth site. If it were the usage of the word, it would be an argument. It's a proper name - spell it right.

- Goldfinger.

TWO MINUTES until the warning for the third and final race. Videos from start of last one are loading, and I'm backlogged on pics from Mer. We're getting to the start.

5D - I'll see what I can do. I'm focusing more on getting the visuals to you all, but if you want more color commentary, I can try to do it. We're in a massive boat, not so maneuverable, so it's not ideal for close analysis...

Here's the final mark rounding from race 2 to keep you entertained:

RC is re-setting, wind is back to the NW.

Here's a video that should make you all laugh - this is when Honour passed HB on the final leg of race two, but that's not what is funny.

And the pics are from the start of Race 2

And this is the end of the race right here:

It may take a minute to process.

While we're waiting for them to re-set, please weigh in with respect to whether you prefer pics, vids, or typing. I'd rather put my effort into the thing that most of you want to see, although I like the multi-pronged approach, as it seems like a richer way to watch. I'll review them later.

typing for now. The refresh is so slow it's timing out a lot

This is drawing in way more viewers than I thought it would. Keep it coming, Clean.

Online comments as it happens, backed up by video and then the pictures

I really really like the video (Great stuff btw) but realize there always will be a significant delay and only so much you can upload. The on line comments give me a sense of what is happening in the race and it puts the video in context.

That was a fairly uneventful start. Bob Hughes is definitely not as aggressive as he was earlier today. Whether he's demoralized or tired, who knows.

Just thinking about that last race....

Getting passed at the finish by a boat that rounded far behind.

Poor Dellenbaugh. It's the 1995 nightmare all over again.

The problem is this: I can't comment while I'm shooting video, nor can Mer while she shoots...I have to sacrifice the video to comment as it happens. Keep 'em coming.

Shife - realize that to lots of GL'ers, the CC is the real deal. People can get all loud about the Richardson Cup, but it ain't the same.

BTW - Can you order me that differential pinion seal kit? Plus, I think I still owe you some cash...see ya in a few days?

RACE ABANDONED, with a big shift to the left at the gun. The RC is resetting right now.

My head feels like I've getting hit with a bat for a week, and the breeze is back on at the moment. It's getting chilly, too. Maybe they'll send us in so I can drink myself to sleep.
