      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

I haven't been to a game since the mid 1980's due to how bad they are. Not worth my time. Always the topic of discussion on talk radio 97.1

Any Lions fan has my sympathy, but then again I'm a Jets fan . . . I feel sympathy for myself. Must be a bit of a masochist to keep coming back to root for these guys.

Yeah, the lions cut all their #1 draft picks and use the waiver wire to build the team. It is a new concept that has not been proven yet but remember the saying, "there is always next year."

Haven't been keep up have you. The only bright spot on this team is Rod Marinelli. He is using his draft picks to build a team while bringing in modest FAs to fill gaps. Hell look at what he did with the secondary this year.

The only #1 draft pick released was Kevin Jones. It was a good move.

Lions will be 9-7 this year.

Much the same is happening with the Dolphins. Lots of second-tier free agents, most of whom are known for making a mark on special teams...and a couple of bigger names.... The draft will be key.

Neither team will get nine wins, though. Not this year.

Rod never gives a straight answer to questions. He's the master of the dodge and fade and folks can't pin him down on anything, not that they are really trying. He just gives the same pad answers week in and week out.

Millen has the final say on draft picks. Here is his record..

"Only 13 players remain from the roster Marinelli inherited when he was hired in January of 2006. Players who were high draft picks or had big contracts have not been spared.

Since Marinelli took over, four former first-round picks and four former second-round picks since 2001 have been traded or released. These are the players, and their draft year, who have departed:

• 2001: Nose tackle Shaun Rogers, second round, traded to Cleveland on Feb. 29.

• 2002: Quarterback Joey Harrington, first round, traded to Miami in 2006; Kalimba Edwards, second round, released last week.

• 2003: Wide receiver Charles Rogers, first round, released in 2006; linebacker Boss Bailey, second round, signed with Denver as a free agent earlier this month.

• 2004: Running back Kevin Jones, first round, released last week; linebacker Teddy Lehman, second round, signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent earlier this month.

• 2005: Wide receiver Mike Williams, first round, traded to Oakland in April of 2007. "

It is hard to build a decent team with incompetent leadership, and even a great coach can't win without talented players.

My favourite Lions quote (and I can't remember who it was in the Free Press):

im a life long lions fan, but boy does kitna blow!

if you look at the tape, the sacks he took last year were mostly terrible- holding onto the ball too long, no ability to avoid the rush, zero pocket awareness.

if kitna plays the whole year they will be 5-11 at best...

big mistake letting go of kevin jones as well.

Someday, they will sell the team to an owner who can make the changes needed. As long as the Ford's own the Lions, there will not make any major improvements.

Cabin fever.

I think my down fall about being a die hard Lion fan is, One I grew up watching Barry and the Lion's of the early to Mid '90's....and 2, I've been to 3 games at Ford Field, the Lion's have won all 3. Dallas in '03 (9-7), Packers in '05(opening day/day after my wedding), and Denver '07 (44-7)....who can blame me?

If you ignore the Millen rants and look closely at what Marinelli is doing with the team, you'd think differently.

....then again, it might just be cabin fever.

Lets be careful here. As enthusiastically stupid as Ford and Millen have behaved, we have no reason to suspect they have broken any laws.

Kywame on the other hand is both stupid and a crook leaving us remembering the Coleman days when at least the crook in charge was smart enough to avoid indictment.

One week is a Bye. The rest will be a Bye Bye.

I'm predicting the perfect season 0-16.

Seriously I think their best chance for wins are against Atlanta and Minn.

There isn't a snowballs chance in hell they'll beat Indy or win in Green Bay the last game of the season.

Maybe 4 wins but most likely 3.

No way they win 6.

My guess is 5 - Atlanta, GB at home, Houston, Minnesota on the road and one fluke random game that sure as hell will not by Indy or Green Bay at Lambeau.

Kitna is absolutely terrible, and the team has gotten significantly worse since last year. (after losing Bryant, Jones, etc)

By any measure, one of the worst franchises in the history of major pro sports.

Despite this, i will be there for week 3 at Candlestick. go lions!

Kitna goes down in 2nd game, Stanton comes in and leads the team to a 10-6 record and the first playoff win since '91.

Lion's Defense ranks in the top 10 due to Rookies D. Harvey and J. Mayo...and the revamped secondary.

Lion's running game finally explodes and has a 1000yd rusher T.Bell with another 800yds by rookie backup.

It ain't easy being a piano man!

To be clear, Joey Harrington probably isn’t the worst quarterback of all time in an absolute sense. But in terms of being so far below average, but far enough above miserable to earn more playing time, Joey Harrington hurt his team more than any other QB in NFL history. If Harrington had been worse, he would have played less, and he wouldn’t have set back the teams he played on. To put it another way, if you had the choice of getting Joey Harrington for 2,538 attempts, or Roger Goodell for 9 attempts you would certainly choose Goodell. At least after he’s gone, your team has a chance.

I suppose this is better than the assistant coach without pants, but not a good start on the rebuilding.

Lions rookie offensive lineman and first-round pick Gosder Cherilus was ordered Wednesday to serve one year of pretrial probation for his role in a Boston bar brawl in which a patron was seriously injured, the Boston Globe reported.

Cherilus also was ordered to pay the victim $52,000 toward his medical bills.

The feeling in Detroit is that coach Rod Marinelli finally has collected a group of core players who espouse his blue-collar, hard-working attitude. Whether that revelation will translate into more victories in 2008 is a matter for debate.

Marinelli will implement a simplified offense and is bringing at least five new defensive starters with him to training camp. Although it is hard to judge actual progress before contact drills begin in training camp, multiple players noted a more positive atmosphere during practices this spring.

What we learned in minicamp

After firing offensive coordinator Mike Martz and promoting offensive line coach Jim Colletto, the Lions are following through on their plan to emphasize the running game. Colletto is installing a new zone-blocking scheme, which gives linemen an area of responsibility rather than a specific player.

NFL.com Video

Lions head coach Rod Marinelli says he likes the attitude of his young players.

Such transitions take time, and it's only fair to assume that the Lions' offensive line will be a work in progress during training camp. Detroit has the veterans necessary to make this style work -- especially on the left side with tackle Jeff Backus and guard Edwin Mulitalo. Rookie right tackle Gosder Cherilus faces a stiff learning curve, but the Lions plan to throw him into the starting lineup immediately.

On the flip side, Colletto gave players far less verbiage to worry about during spring practices. Martz's playbook has been pared down considerably, and Colletto is emphasizing quality over quantity. Repetition was a key area of emphasis during minicamp.

Marinelli also appears to have added some stability to his defense by signing several players -- including cornerback Brian Kelly and safety Dwight Smith -- who have experience in his Tampa 2 scheme.

Still unresolved

We all know the Lions want to run the ball more this season. But after the departures of veterans Kevin Jones and T.J. Duckett, can you name the remaining members of the Lions' backfield? If so, congratulations. It's no easy task.

For now, veteran Tatum Bell has been penciled in as the starting tailback, based on his success in a zone-blocking scheme while playing in Denver. But it wouldn't be a surprise to see rookie Kevin Smith -- a third-round pick from Central Florida -- emerge as a candidate for the starting job during training camp.

Smith has the kind of warrior mentality that appeals to Marinelli. Smith refers to his offseason workouts as building "armor" for the season and is proud of his physical style -- one that would fit well into the ball-control offense Marinelli is envisioning.

In addition to Smith and Bell, another candidate for the job is Brian Calhoun, a former third-round pick who has struggled with knee injuries.

Injury analysis

Two key defensive players -- linebacker Ernie Sims and defensive lineman Cory Redding -- had arthroscopic shoulder surgery during the offseason and didn't spend much time on the practice field in minicamp. The Lions downplayed their surgeries, calling them cleanup procedures, and said both players would be ready for training camp.

Sims is one of the team's best players and occupies the premier playmaking position in this defense at weakside linebacker. He hasn't missed a game in two seasons with the Lions and it would be a serious blow if he loses playing time.

Time for stepping up

Although the Lions want to re-emphasize the running game, much of their personnel remains geared toward Martz's passing offense. Potentially, the Lions could have one of the league's best receiving duos in Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson.

Lions fans sometimes are frustrated with Williams' inconsistency, and there were rumors that Detroit considered trading him before the draft. But it appears Williams will go to training camp with the Lions, and in reality, the bigger issue facing the team's passing offense is Johnson's development.

Considered a can't-miss prospect, Johnson had a relatively quiet rookie season in 2007. He caught 48 passes but is convinced that a back injury limited his progress for most of the year.

Johnson has been healthy this spring and is determined to give the Lions the kind of downfield playmaker they thought he would be when they drafted him. The Lions' scaled-back playbook could benefit Johnson as much as anyone, and he said during spring practices that he felt far more comfortable in the offense.

Training camp start date: July 23

Key for the Defense- Dizon's ability to learn, diagnose, and lead the defense.... the 'green dot' should help tremendously. People thought Detroit Lions picked Ernie Simms too early also.... Dizon's tackling, speed and intensity is compared to Simms. His football IQ is higher, though his hits won't be as powerful. I'm excited to watch this kid play.

Key for Offense- Kevin Smith (the new #34). A far better pick than Chicago's Forte... Yes Forte had better 40 time, but NO NCAA RB had more yards or TDs than Smith. He should make watching the Lions fun again.

I'll be damned if I parade around in purple like you fags!... OR do you root for your team while wearing cockcheese on your head?....or do you sleep with your wittle cubby bear?

I root for my home town team and fuck off if you don't like it!

GO LIONS!

Is there something in the water up there?. The Lydowns have sucked for the last fifty years with very brief exceptions, and defined futility. They will continue to suck until WC Ford sells the team to someone that is willing to reverse the culture of apathy and put in management that has a clue. There is a reason why the Wings have been an elite team for the last fifteen years, Pistons for the last several, and the Tigers back in the right direction. Ownership, and excellent management that knows how to make personnel decisions. Only Ford would keep a bumbling ass clown like Millen around.

Who Fucking cares! Did you say the same about the Red Wings before '97? Cause they sucked for 42 years!

Teams that have more League championships than the Lions;

Packers

Bears

49ers

Giants

Cowboys

Browns

Steelers

Redskins

8 out of 32.

They have won a single playoff game in the last 50 years. One game, that is it.

How many teams that have been around that long have less?

"Which NFL teams have the most losses?

In: Football - American

As far as history is concerned, at the start of the 2007 season the Arizona Cardinals was the NFL franchise with the most losses in history with 664. Second most was the Detroit Lions with 554 and third most was the Philadelphia Eagles with 533. "

rumballed, Please, it was the Bungles. Ask Mr Porter what he thought.

All your hopes will be crushed by week 14 and they will need someone to help them get into the playoffs on week 16 and a last minute flubbed field goal will kill their chance at the playoffs.

A leopard does not change its spots.

I've read that script before, unfortunately.

Week 14?. More like week 8, predicating yet another embarrassing Millen outburst in one of the rare times he shows his face publicly. Why do people get amped up about pre-season NFL games, it is mostly has has beens and never will bes?.

Yeah, fuck me for rooting for my 'hometown' team. Fuck me for getting excited about new rookies putting moves on oposing team's 1st string Olinemen.... Gee I'm such a twit.

And Gee, your right....I'm pretty sure the bengals just let the Lion's 1st and 2nd team defense embarrass their first string offense just for shits and giggle. <_<

You guys are the joke.

If you didn't watch it, shut the fuck up.

If you can predict the future, get a fucking 900#.

As for me, I'll root for my 'hometown team' until I die.

Lighten up Francis. It's pre-season, not the Super Bowl, which the Lydowns will never reach in my lifetime as long as WC Ford owns the team. Only in Detroit would Matt Millen still be employed after the laughingstock he has engineered over the last five years, any other frachise would have broomed him long ago. I have watched the Lions flail for way too long to get giddy over a fricken pre-season game.

These games are meaningless in terms of score, it is about evaluating schemes and players. The starters play a couple series, if that, the bulk of the game is played by rookies, second and third stringers and players fighting to make the team.

Ya know, I gotta say the Lions don't look so bad in preseason so far. I only saw part of one game but Kitna put together a pretty nice drive. I'm thinking of taking in the Nov 2 game at Soldiers Field.

We still have a certain "Florida Infection" with us this year.............................

But still perhaps he'll settle down. When he is good he is very good but when he isn't................................anyway:

Go Bears!!

Francis? With all the high pitch 'waa waa waa Millen' 'waa waa waa Ford' 'waa waa I've been watching the lydowns (how original  ) for waa waa waa years' Its you who need to check your shorts OR grow a pair. I'd rather watch the Lions lose 50 more years than listen to the whine of 'ol timers' like yourself who can't let go of the past.

I'm a Fan. That means every year is a new season.

Point Break-

I've liked Orton since he got the Bears to the playoffs in '05... too bad he got shit on.

Kellen Davis is going to be a asset this year.... hell of a TD grab agains SF last weekend.

Blindly rah rahing a team that has defined futility for the last 50 years doesn't make you a fan. You are probably one of those "fans" that dress up like some PCP fueled reject from a Village People reality show pilot that always seem to show up on national television making complete fools out of themselves at NFL games while completely oblivious to the level of their asshattery.

You are correct, every year is is a new season..of losing. All the insults you spout don't change the basic fact, the Lydowns have sucked for the last 50 years, and have lost the second most games of any NFL franchise ever. Since you feel the Lions are so close to a breakthrough season, I suggest you run downtown and be first in the waiting line for a Super Bowl ticket. I'll check up on you in ten years or so to see how the wait is going.

He skippered the team well enough for an interim while Grossman was hurt. I'd like to see us stick with him while we look for a long term QB..............I mean QB has been a revolving door position at the Bears since 1985.

Kellen Davis is going to be a asset this year.... hell of a TD grab agains SF last weekend.

Gotta love a big tightend. Esp. when your offense is going to chew up the field 3 yards at a time.............................

Enjoy it Rummy while it lasts.

The pre season means nothing and that's why the Lions excell during it.

Just remember when you give your heart to the Lions all you can count on is that they'll tear it out and wipe their ass with it by week 8.

You got to like Roy when he gives the ball to the kids who wear his jersey. Maybe the nicest "name" receiver in the game. Alll the assholes get the national press. In training camp this guy would take kids who were wearing jerseys of ex lions (charles rogers, Mike Williams) to the concession stand and buy them new jerseys.

I am not the biggest Lions fan there is, but I would never root against them. I got to respect someone who is loyal to the home team. If the Lions ever played in the super bowl the Metro Detroit area hospitals would be full of guys with broken arms and legs suffered by trying to jump on to a moving bandwagon.

On opening day I will be working, but I will be wearing my honolulu blue and silver.

Bandwagon, what bandwagon? It's a rusty cart with a broken wheel and nobody's driving.

I still root for them though. Sigh!!!!

I don't root against them, I actually hope they do well. Unfortunately as has been said here by a bunch of people and proven time and time again over the last 50+years, they always find a way to get your hopes up that they might just break through and then self destruct, usually in spectacular fashion. Most of us just don't buy the "this is the year" theory every year.

As for the bandwagon idea, only in Detroit could a team that bad for that long sell out their stadiums routinely.
