      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

If it would screw up an otherwise high draft pick, I'm sure they would oblige--other than that, I see them heading down the road of perfection--0-16

We all know perfectly well the best way for a high draft pick to be screwed up is for the Lions to be making the pick.

No kidding, I wonder if some of the higher picks will be sandbagging their bowl games and combine workouts so the Liedowns don't take them...

Thinking like a fan again. Its all about the cash. The only reason a player turns down being the #1 pick is so they can work more endorsements out of if. Since Eli had a built in doorway to endorsment cash it worked for him. Don't expect it from any of this years players. Besides the only way the Lions can screw this up, is if they don't at least try to trade this pick. They could get a first round pick this year and next plus a 2nd and another lower pick for this year.

I don't know that there will be many other teams bidding for the pick, the money commitment and salary cap hit to the #1 is huge. I would love to see them trade down for additional picks to fill more holes, but we'll see what they can get for it.

unfortunately there is no for sure #1 pick NFL quarterback type in the mix this year. The Lions only hope for getting value out of this pick is for someone to really want a pass rusher or a left tackle.

So there you have the typical Lions' scenario of never doing anything right: the year they finally get it together enough to get the #1 draft pick, there is nobody worth drafting as #1. :)

look, the idiot lions fans are already getting the excuses together for another draft bust!

if the team has half a brain they will draft OT Michael Oher. but they dont, they dont want to win!

Why are we idiots? Because we support the home team? What team do you support the one who is winning at the time?

Riola is a tool....

"Nope. Not one bit," said Raiola, who returned to the lineup Sunday after missing four games because of a broken right thumb. "Because I wish everybody out there came into the film room and watched the film, watched the effort put out there. And, yeah, everybody makes mistakes, everybody messes up -- and I'm talking for everybody right now -- and, yeah, they're paying customers. But we're trying to put some wins on the board and give them something to cheer about. And I don't know what to say, other than what I said yesterday."

Face it Riola.... No talent=No wins.

Hey the Lions made MSNBC:

Worst Teams Ever List

....I'm feeling a win this weekend.

Peyton Manning and the Indy offense against the Lions defense and Orlovsky back at QB and you are feeling a win?. I think you must be feeling the hallucinogenic substance you sprinkled on your Cheerios this morning. This game will be over before the half.

Can you imagine the level of depression that would be felt by Chace Daniel or Bradford or Sanchez if they were chosen #1 by the Lions? I'd buy stock in whoever makes Xanax.

Problem with the Lions has always been coaching. Lots of talented players have rolled through Motown in the wake of successful stints in other teams and/or successful stints with subsequent teams. Marinelli must go. Maybe they'll hire a coach whose last name doesn't start with M this time. M is for 'mediocre'

Hroth

I'd have to disagree. The Lions have had some pretty good coaches over the years, Bobby Ross made it to the Super Bowl with the Chargers, Mariucci did pretty well with the Niners. Monte Clark was a decent coach. They have had some duds as well, but the problem has been more with the ownership and team/personnel management than coaching. Millen set the franchise back a good five years should they get someone that knows how to draft and sign decent free agents on board, it will take them that long to get back to respectability.

I agree some OK head coaches--but the staffs have traditionally sucked and those are the key elements to improving players skills and performance. The head coach may set the tone but if the assistants are all second rate then there is little chance of success. Further I agree that player personnel has been a disaster.

Still--witness all the players who sucked in Detroit who are OK elsewhere? Personnel has a role, but system and coaches are a huge factor.

I agree to a point, but the head coach picks his staff, and you can only coach players with lesser talent so far. The Lions have gotten very little out of the first three rounds at least during the Millen era at a time when they consistently had high draft picks, and nothing out of the last three. The top picks should be the star players and playmakers, instead for the Lions those picks are mostly washed out of football or backups.

I liked last year's draft and I agree with better coaching those players would've excelled faster.

Gosdner, Smith, Avril, Fluellen, Dizon, Felton.... 6 good picks....Cohen(DT) has potential...the only stupid pick in my opinion was that 5th round WR that we cut.... hell... there were ALOT of RBs available who could return kicks.

*Dizon was forced to play middle by Millen. Marinelli wanted him SAM, which would've kept Buster Davis on the roster, which would've been the end of paris lennon as Davis is younger and better.

Gosdner is good.

Avril is doing well for the OLB to DE transition.

Fluellen will be a solid DT with more playing time.

Smith is a good back, could be great with an OL.

Felton is the man...or soon will be, he got alittle banged.

Atleast with the '08 rookies the Lions have something started.

I hope the draft goes like this....OL, MLB, DE/DT, RB/KR, In that order. A glamour QB is a nice thought, but the '10 draft class will be stacked as well. Plus, the Lions should be fine with Culpepper, Stanton, or Orlovsky.

Bottom line, I'm hoping for a new GM/VP of personel and a full out coaching staff...NO BARRIES OR COLLETTOES!

Biggest test of the season coming up. The Lie-downs will have to be at their best (errr, worst) to maintain perfection against a team like the Aints.

Are you kidding me? The highest scoring team against the league's worst defense? Right now they are working on changing the scoreboard to display three digit numbers.

The only chance left is if the Packers decide they really would rather not go out into the snow for a meaningless game.

I'm really hoping for a lion win against the hated cheeseheads the last game of the season. It won't harm the draft pick to only win one game..................I mean its perfect. They screw around and Farve leaves and wins the Division for the Jets, the cheeseheads flail around in third place and finally..................in their own house, for the last game of the season, the winless lions take them out.

Its perfect!

Come on. You guys hate the cheeseheads too don't you?

As much as I hate the Possums my heart really goes out to them.

They've played much better than their record indicates and they have obviously haven't given up.

Every week they make an effort and preform better than expected. Weather the opposition is looking beyond them or the Possums are improving, whatever the reason the team hasn't thrown in the towle however easy it could be to just say fuck it and go into the games without caring.

As much as I'd like to see an 0-16 season I'd bet money they'll win at least one and possibly both of their remaining games.

WTF did the Lions do to Roy Williams? This guy was a monster in high school (he played locally), a monster in college. He's what, about the 5th receiver for the Cowboys and has done basically nothing? How do you undo how the Lions mistrained this guy and turn him back into a receiver?

Roy had a pro bowl year three ? years ago, but has been inconsistent the last two. He just has trouble getting separation from defenders and drops a lot of catchable balls. Can't blame his troubles in the Dallas soap opera on the Lions. I'm sure Jerry Jones has the answer, he's a legend in his own mind.... ;)

Detroit

Police today reported finding a "John Doe" male body in the Detroit River.

The victim apparently drowned due to excessive alcohol consumption.

He was wearing black fishnet stockings, a red garter belt, a strap-on dildo, and a Detroit Lions jersey.

He also had a cucumber stuffed up his ass.

The police thoughtfully removed the Lions jersey to spare the family any unnecessary embarrassment...

The sad story from yesterday is the New Orleans punter Glenn Pakulak, a career practice squad player finally getting some NFL play from Pontiac. I am sure he is making the league minimum, but reported bought tickets for all of his family and friends to come see him play.

He didn't get to kick once.

Used to live there in the Wayne Fontes - Barry Sanders era.

The Pistons and the Wings were on top of their games then, so there were distractions from football.

Sad to see the relentless failures of the Lions. It's not good for the league when a team is mired in mediocrity. Most teams go through ups and downs-even the Cardinals will make the playoffs though they're playing pretty awfully now.

I was looking at Yahoo Sports today, and in one of their articles they feature a quote of the day. It's a classic.

“Do you wish your daughter married a better defensive coordinator?”

– Question posed to Detroit Lions coach Rod Marinelli from a member of the Detroit media. Marinelli’s son-in-law is Detroit coordinator Joe Barry.

I have to agree with almost everyone, that was a bit below the belt... yeah they suck, but don't go after the daughter.

I say there should be a flat fee paid to all the players and they should be paid on performance.... this would be the last losing season in their lives if they did that.

They won a place in history

Yes, but they can still match last year's Dolphins...one last chance. Sadly, they look even worse than last year's Dolphins, and Parcells is under contract, I think, for a few more years, so rapid resurrection is not as easily at hand as it has been for the Phins. That said, the Lions will probably win, and the Phins lose, to muck up a perfectly good season at closing....

Look, I don't think Marinelli is going to survive this and he'll eventually be dismissed. That would seem to make sense -- there has to be at least one scapegoat, there has to be some amount of change in the franchise and Marinelli just found himself at the bottom of the food chain.

But if you look at Ford's reasoning for keeping both Lewand and Mayhew, why would it be such a leap in logic to believe that he wouldn't keep Marinelli, too?

From the linky....

"Lions owner William Clay Ford has said that both chief operating officer Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew will remain with the team, possibly in their current roles. (By the way, my guess is that Lewand becomes president, Mayhew is the GM and they'll go hire someone for the assistant GM position. Just my guess).

Anyway, the only logical conclusion to Ford's decision is that he believes former president Matt Millen was the main reason for the team's demise. Ford has to believe that the work of Lewand and Mayhew was soiled by the bad decisions from Millen -- otherwise why would he keep them around? Ford must believe that now that Millen is gone and these two men are free to operate the franchise in a different manner, the team will be successful."

Ford's got it made... put out a poor product with juuuuuuust enough to get fools in the gate.

NFL Denies Detroit Lions' Request To Watch Super Bowl

DETROIT-Just hours after filing their annual request to view the NFL Championship Game, an annual ritual usually regarded as a mere formality for most football teams, the foundering Detroit Lions organization received a curt "no" from the league's front office.

"It is the considered opinion of the league that winning not one single game out of 16 is well below the standard we expect from our teams," the response from the league, penned by Roger Goodell and signed by a coalition of NFL owners, read in part.

"We the undersigned feel the free time of Detroit's players, coaches, and front-office personnel would be better spent scouting the draft, working on their fundamentals, or perhaps even seeking alternate employment."

Goodell attached a special rider to the Super Bowl denial-of-viewership form specifically instructing the Lions not to try and watch the Super Bowl at a bar or at someone else's house, as the NFL would be sure to find out eventually.

As a Packers fan, I'm glad that you're forced to pin your hopes of making the play offs on the success of Houston. Good luck with that.

This should be an interesting game though. We have two teams that have truly perfected the art of choking in the fourth quarter, facing each other. I really hope Detroit is just a little better at sucking though, because you have to appreciate the humor in 0-16. 1-15 is just pathetic, but 0-16 is funny!

Dallas had competent management and used the bunch of high draft picks they had from drafting high and the Herschel Walker trade pretty well. The Lions have incompetent management, horrible player evaluation, and have pissed away most of their draft picks during the Millen debacle. The only hope is that Ford either sells the team, or turns active management over to his son, and someone who knows how to run a team and evaluate players is brought in. Otherwise the parade of apathy and ineptitude will continue on. I hope they can beat the fudge packers this afternoon, but I doubt it is in the cards.

I've done some Lion bashing in this thread, I've even refused to watch them for the last 3 seasons. But I was still a fan hoping for a turnaround, however 0-16 is horse shit. At best I'm now a bandwagon Lions fan, but at this point and judging from history the Titanic has a better chance at pulling in at the White Star pier in New York than the playoff bound Lions bandwagon does pulling into Detroit.

Here Rummy,

You can be the first in the north with one of these...

"Celebrate the Detroit Lions 2008 display of football futility with your OWEN 16 jersey (0-16). Commemorate the 2008 history making season and record that are sure to last a lifetime. The beauty of this jersey is you will never have to replace it like you did your Barry Sanders, Joey Harrington, Charles Rogers, Roy Williams, Kevin Jones, etc., jerseys because this history making feat is sure to stand the test of time.

Or buy this jersey if your name is OWEN. Sorry about that.

NFL Replica Jersey. Not actual 2008 jersey. Never seen a competitive game, similar to the Detroit Lions fans in last decade.

All standard sizes and Detroit Lions colors are available: S, M, L, XL, XXL, etc. White, black, blue and throwback. Each jersey is custom made and will ship as soon as complete. Please indicate Men's, Women's or Kid's sizing (have mercy).

I think I'll get me an Owen 32 jersey

Not a Lions fan, was a long time ago until they did not draft Anthony Carter back in the day, but the next head coach was just fired. Ford does not have a fucking clew if he does not write the check to have Mike Shanahan run the team on the field and off!!!!!!!!

Funny... Maybe I can get it signed!

Since any Michigander knows WCF hasn't a clue, we should all just hope his kid can talk him into it.

I think Shanahan could fill the spot of Coach and personnel man... help mentor these fuckups that we're stuck with as fans.

Shanahan would be a great choice, but he would want more control than the Lions will give.
