      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

I would stay on the defensive side of the ball with the first several picks. DT, DBs, a pash rushing DE, then maybe offense. Look at free agency to shore up the Oline, there is no way that the Lydowns can win with the worst defense in the league over the last several years.

agreed. hard aground is right though about trading down. this is how belichek built his dynasty. we should trade our second round picks this year and next for a bunch of 3rd-4th rounders and draft some diamonds in the rough... but if a shutdown corner is available in the 2nd round (or late 1st round through a trade) we gotta go with that

Trade out of the first round and own the second. Of course they would still need scouts.......

For the past decade the Lions cant find a diamond with the first pick. What makes you think they could find a diamond in the third or fourth round?

try the past 50 years, except for calvin and barry sanders! and of course lets not forget last year, stafford is at least decent, and he could be great one day!

the difference is that the guy making the pics is now different. last year's draft class was pretty solid. delmas is a beast!

Dick Night Train Lane

Great players, but not first round picks.

Barney was in the second round

Lane was an undrafted player who first played for the Rams

the 1st rounder with the most pure talent (besides barry) may have been this guy:

from today's freep:

Novi -- Former Detroit Lion Charles Rogers was to be back in court today after passing out in a Mexican restaurant, apparently from drinking too much, police said.

The trouble-prone Rogers was arrested on suspicion of failing to fulfill his probation in a Novi 52nd District Sobriety Court program, Novi Deputy Chief Tom Lindberg said.

Rogers was taken into custody Tuesday at an On The Border restaurant on Haggerty Road about 3:15 p.m. after employees were unable to rouse him and were concerned he might have suffered a heart attack, another police source said.

"We were called to the restaurant on a medical run and he was taken to Providence Park Hospital for observation," said Lindberg, who declined to reveal Rogers' medical problems. "He will be back before Judge Brian MacKenzie on Wednesday."

Violation of probation is a misdemeanor and would likely result in jail time.

Rogers, who pleaded guilty last year to operating a vehicle while visibly impaired by alcohol, tested positive three times for alcohol and failed to appear once for testing in November.

Sobriety Court is nine months of intensive probation in which defendants must submit to daily or weekly drug and alcohol testing and must undergo group and individual counseling.

On Sept. 16, the former Michigan State star receiver was found by the Novi Fire Department slumped over the wheel of his car while the engine was running. Rogers, 28, failed sobriety tests and was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while impaired and driving without a valid license.

Rogers, who is from Saginaw, was the second pick overall in the 2003 NFL draft. His NFL career has been sidelined by injuries and substance abuse problems.

In another case in March, Rogers was sentenced to jail in a domestic assault involving his girlfriend. In that case, he was offered Sobriety Court instead of jail. Rogers was caught falsifying documents stating that he had attended Alcoholic Anonymous meetings, one of several Sobriety Court conditions, and tested positive for use of alcohol, a violation of the program.

Rogers was suspended by the Lions for substance abuse in 2005 and released the next year. The team says he must repay two-thirds of a $9.1 million bonus.

Is it too soon? naaah

The stench of Matt Millen is starting to disperse a little. Every time I see that guy on ESPN I just shake my head. How can anyone think he is an expert?

Since he left, you guys have had some nice drafts. Good luck, hopefully Matt Stafford can lead Detroit to at least 6 wins. I think 6 wins is very possible.

The defense is still porous, but the GM Mayhew has done a nice job with the draft and free agency. Six wins is possible if they can stay healthy.

agreed, but a really really tough schedule this year, and an AWFUL defensive backfield mean 4 or 5 wins more likely.

But this time we mean it. Really we do.

They are still woefully thin on talent after the Millen debacle, but they do have a few players that can change a game. Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Best, Delmas, Suh. Not nearly enough, but a few. Even as cynical as I am about the Lydowns, WC Ford and the culture of losing and apathy that has embedded itself, there is a sense that they are on the right track for once. Plenty of time to jump the tracks, and time will tell, but in three or four years they could be a decent team. Then again, they are the Lions.

Luckily, Detroit gets two free wins from the Bears. Beyond that, it's going to be a rough year for those suckholes from across the pond.

That may have been the right call based upon the wording of the rule, but that is one dumb rule when applied in this context. There is no question that was a touchdown. Bet there's a tweaking of the rule before next season.

Oh, it get's better...

"If Matt Millen remains Public Enemy No. 1 in Detroit, Roy Williams might be a close No. 2.Williams, the former Lions receiver, praised Millen for doing "a great job" as Lions general manager in a radio interview today, complimented Millen's drafting acumen and blamed the organization's troubles during his 4 1/2 seasons in Detroit partially on the offensive line.

"That's coming from a guy who checked out of here, and he never wanted to be here," Lions center Dominic Raiola said. "I don't even think he's the top receiver in Dallas anymore. So if he wants to throw shots, we can throw shots back, too. Whatever, he went to Dallas -- pretty much what I'm saying, Roy's a front-runner. I mean, you want to talk (stuff) about us, that's what I'm going to give you."

During an interview on WXYT-FM (97.1)'s "Stoney and Bill Show," Williams was asked about Millen's comments praising former Lions coach Rod Marinelli during Thursday night's NFL Network broadcast of the Bears-Dolphins game.

Marinelli, the Bears' defensive coordinator, coached the Lions' 0-16 season.

"I think Millen did a great job of putting a good football team together," Williams said. "I think we had all the pieces. I don't think we had it internally, as far as offensive linemen -- a good, solid base for the quarterback. But skill positions, I think we were set. But it just didn't work out. If anybody else was to play GM on those years that he had those picks, I mean, most of those picks, you would take the same people....

Raiola scoffed when the subject of Millen's draft record came up today. "Mike Williams has a resurgence in his career after losing all that weight and getting a shot in Seattle, which is great for him, but he was 270 pounds when he was here," Raiola said. "We took Joey Harrington, who's not even playing football anymore. We took Charles Rogers, who's out of football. Andre Johnson was the next pick. We can go on and on.

"You go across the league, this is a different Detroit Lions. This roster's not even close to the same. But that's Roy. That's Roy. It wasn't his fault. Offensive line's fault, we couldn't run the ball. I mean, we had another first-round running back who's not even in the NFL -- he's in the UFL now -- Kevin Jones. He had a couple injuries, but I mean, that's funny to me. Teddy Lehman was a high second-round pick. Kalimba Edwards was a high second-round pick. If you look across the league, all those picks, they're still on that team helping that team win. Maybe one or two are not. Maybe you might mess one or two up, but not the way we did." "

Holy crap. One more game and the Chad Henne experiment will thankfully draw to a close. The question is whether Sparano and Ireland involuntarily join Parcells as former Dolphins. The new owner likes big names, and the prospect of having Bill Cowher come in and help sell tickets might drive him to reach for the hook.

Lions played pretty well and deserved the win, if only for playing the whole game. Dolphins playing for better draft position at this point. What the hell, as long as the Jets lose, it's all good.

I would bet on 4 in a row after next week vs Vikings, plus the bonus of not being in the cellar of the division.

What challenges will the Vikings bring next week? A blizzard? A frozen field? A damaged roof? They are not good luck for the places they play lately. My guess is the first indoor plaque of locust.

Well, this is the first time since the Millen debacle began that there is a legitimate reason to head into the off-season with the expectation that "next year" might actually bring some promise of good things for Lions fans. The team actually is learning how to play football now and no longer seem to be our LieDowns of old.

Now if something could be done about RichRod... One thing at a time I guess.

I did say it would take luck. :). Seriously, 10-6 is probably enough to make the playoffs, it was last year. They do have a favorable schedule, Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Dallas, Denver, San Francisco, Carolina, Oakland and only a couple tough non conference teams. If they can stay healthy (Stafford), win on the road consistently and hold their own in the Central they have a shot. They are the masters of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, but they have a shot.

Teams are still figuring out how to fit in under the new salary cap, trying to sign free agents, and sign the draftees. All at the same time they are holding the first day of training camp. And you have the playoffs figured out already.

Detroit is playing a large number of games against first year coaches. With this short practice year with no off season workouts. Its going to be hard for them to install entire brand new play books. This might end up giving the Lions a game or two.

Cherlius is hurt still from last year. He missed the last part of the season which if you recall coincided with the 4 game win streak. Which included several balanced running games and not very many QB sacks. Hmm, maybe the Oline problem has been on the right side all along. Backus has a torn pec muscle. Should be ready for the season, and Fairly is fine not to worry.

I figure 8-8, but with a strong early push to drive up the hype before losing 3 out of the last 4 so they miss the playoffs. Again.

cant believe nobody resurrected this thread. Loved watching the D-line smack around the pretty boy. Just wait till Fairly(I hate this Auburn cunt but he is a baaaaddddd man) is lined up there as well.

Stafford(Georgia) looked like a pro-bowler, I still think Calvin(Georgia Tech) could be the best in the league. I have been attempting to ride this bandwagon for 3 years, I am hoping it goes somewhere this year

Funny, I actually brought it up to post, then changed my mind. Yeah, they looked good, but they were also 4-0 in the preseason in the Owen year. The Lydowns were fired up, the Pats thought it was a preseason game.

They still don't have an inside running game, and the secondary while better is still not very good. Even the pretty boy (MIchigan ;) ) has a bad game every now and then. Good to see Backus (Michigan) back. Stafford looks excellent, and CJ is just a beast. Even third string qb Drew Stanton (Farmington Hills Harrison, Michigan State) looked pretty good

Seriously thinking about moving Stafford and the D up in my draft order for my fantasy league. Hope they aren't just fantasizing about being good so far.

Seriously..is Suh a dirty player, or just strong and aggressive?. Outside of the Delhomme mauling in preseason last year, I haven't seen anything I would have given a penalty for.

Yea sure, Punching an Olineman after the play is just like a football player is supposed to be. The guy might be a teddy bear off the field, but he is gonna cost you guys in the long run if he does not check himself.

Punching?..Mankins had lawrence jackson by the facemask, suh stepped in. The official chose not to throw a flag, but warned him. As for the Bears, Cutler should start thinking about how to stay on the sideline, that D line, the Bears O line and Martz's offense isn't looking good for his health.

Stafford needs to prove he can stay healthy for a season and absorb hits. Of course he did get hurt his rookie year against the Browns, and came right back in to win the game instead of cowering on the bench like Cutler.

Cutler is Cutler, not much I can do about that. At least he made it through 99.99% of the season unlike your guy. Personally I don't think he did anything wrong and will listen to what his team members say before I listen to the Schlerith (stink)lead talking heads in the press. the guy has a rocket arm, is accurate when protected and from what I saw last year, is tough as crap. (50+sacks and he still took the needle and tried to go in the 2nd half).

Lets take a look at Stafords stats.... Oh, he does not have any since you guys drafted him..... Rather have Cutler.....

Stafford is in his third year, and has been hurt a lot on really bad teams. Like I said, he has a lot to prove. What has Cutler done in several years, other than sulk his way off one team and quit on another?. At least Stafford is willing to play hurt.

Barley,

I have a really have a unique perspective on this as I live here in Denver and have heard everything before during and after the Mcdaniels debacle going all the way back before Shanny was coach. (I hate the donkeys BTW so this is coming from an unbiased perspective) Now, Cutler was drafted by "The mastermind" and Denver fell in love with him from day 1 thinking he was the next coming of Elway. Then Mcdork came in and f'd the team up. At some point Cutler disrespected Shlerith (stink on espn and X lineman during the Elway era) by not touching the his SB ring or whatever, so now he does not like Cutler. Somehow Cutler gets through all this, makes the pro Bowl and gets while the getting is good. Fast forward 2 yrs and we get to the NFC Championship game despite having the worst O line in the game(Might have something to do with the QB). Shlerith starts badmouthing him when he has an MCL tare and now he is marked as a bad guy by Stink's buddies at ESPN. No one had said a word about his toughness prior to Shlerith going nutz. I will give you the whiner thing as a rumor, but Cutler did not really say anything to the press, or anyone else for that matter, when all of this was going on(he was in Louisiana or somesouch). I really don't get where that came from but there is the fact that Denver fans suck and are very vindictive/idiotically defensive when they are wrong. Heck, 3/4 of them are Tebow fans and still think he should start. Witness the whole Mcdummy thing, They are still slamming him for getting rid of Cutler and 1/2 of the rest of the team. So you tell me, Is cutler at fault, can he get through a 16 game season if he gets the protection he needs? I like to think so.

For whatever reason, he wore out his welcome in Denver. You can speculate all day, but despite McDaniels fumbling I doubt the Broncos owner wanted to ship Cutler off. If the rumors of Cutler ignoring his phone calls are accurate, then it is not hard to see why. The Bears paid a huge price for Cutler, he has yet to approach anything like a return on that. He has without question talent, the question really is does he have the supporting cast and a scheme to use his talents?

We've seen the Martz and Marinelli show before here. Martz runs what Martz runs, regardless of what he has. He made Jon Kitna look like a decent qb, and Roy Williams like an elite receiver. Neither is, nor are the current Bears the Greatest Show on Turf. Not even close. The Bears don't have the O line to run Martz's slow developing plays, if last year didn't prove that with the pounding Cutler took, nothing will. Letting Kreutz go for a few 100K was a seriously bad move for a marginal line. Marinelli had never been a coordinator until last year. Urlacher is past his prime, and the Bears D is a shadow if five years ago. Blind obsession with the Tampa 2 scheme is not productive, time has moved on.

All trash talking about QBs aside, the Lions will have a better record than the Bears this year.

Suh pointed out that an official saw the entire play and that they had discussed Suh's attempt to get Mankins away from the Lions' Lawrence Jackson. Suh was not called for a penalty, while Mankins received a personal foul for grabbing Jackson's face mask.

"I don't regret it at all," Suh said. "What I find funny about the situation is that I wasn't the one called for the 15-yard face-mask penalty, and I also didn't know you could get fined for defending a teammate."

He said he had a "great talk about the play with the referee who was right there."

"He said in the future, I should let them handle those situations, but that he understood exactly what I was trying to do," he said.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz saw the latest incident the same way.

"He was trying to get someone off one of his teammate's face mask," Schwartz said. "He didn't get a flag and the other guy got a flag."

Not a Lions fan either, but I do think they are going to be an above average team this season.

The coach of the Lions gets wind of a potential new young recruit who lives in Afghanistan.

He and the Detroit Recruiting Manager thumb a lift with the USAF to the war torn country and track the young man down.

Risking life and limb dodging bombs, bullets, RPGs and grenades they finally find the lad and convince him to come to America. The boy does a full pre-season, plays all the practice games and gets selected for the roster the first game of the year. Ten minutes into the first quarter, the runningback goes down with a severe knee injury. The coach turns to the young lad and says ' This is it son, take the runningback position and show us what you can do!'

The lad takes the field and plays the greatest debut game in NFL history. He runs for 7 firstdowns, breaks away three times, two for scores,(1 the tie breaker with 6 sec. onthe clock) and one thrilling 43 yard scramble on third and 16. He also gets a few key blocks on two consecutive end arrounds and falls on a quarterback fumble deep in their own territory.

The Lions carried him on thier shoulders after his game winning TD. Back in the dressing room, the Coach tells the rest of the team what the young Taliban boy has been through and that he is a model for all youth in Detroit. He then pulled the boy aside and tells him to ring his mother and tell her what he did today.

The boy phones his mother and says 'Mum! Guess what I did today!'

'I don't care what you did today' said his mother 'I'll tell YOU what happened here today while you were out wasting time! - Your Dad was stabbed and robbed, the house was torched, our car blown up, your sister attacked and your brother abducted!'

'By the beard of the prophet mother' said the boy ' I feel a bit responsible for what happened in my absence'.

His mother replied before slamming the phone down 'So you should be!.......If it wasn't for you, we would never have moved to Detroit in the first place!'

Naw, I've suffered through this team for way too many years to be jumping on a bandwagon. Through countless mediocre teams, several GMs, even more coaches that inevitably leave in bewildered frustration , and the complete and utter futility that was the Millen era. I've seen them snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in creative ways. You won't find many people that are more cynical about the Lydowns than me. But....and this is a huge grain of salt but..they finally seem to have a GM that has a clue. Solid draft picks, good free agent signings and a nucleus of players that can dominate a game. They are a long ways from being a top tier team, but they will be respectable this year. More about what the Bears aren't then what the Lydowns are.

They have clawed (pun intended) their way back to mediocrity. With a bit of luck, they might even (gasp) make the playoffs this year.

Let's not get crazy now. Way too many better teams in the NFC South alone.

Opening week and the NFC South just went 0-3 against the Norris division.

Sort of a good news bad news proposition. The bad news is that they are still the Lydowns, with all of that history despite being vastly improved both talent and management wise. The good news is that Rod "Owen" Marinelli and Mike Martz are in Chicago.. Hope Cutler is ready for another pounding this year. No wait, he has Roy Williams now.
