      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

      Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Spritfest '08

Here's a brief update from the racing today. Winds were around 20k this morning (gusts into high 20s), and were still building when we headed in around 12:30.

 

Out of the J109s that competed the top three were Gossip, then Caminos, then TLC.

 

There were 11 J80s registered. Rumor took first, and it was hard to see if Klingler or Breakaway (local boat) took 2nd.

 

Only one race was sailed. At the end of the last leg, a local 80 lost its keel and proceeded to capsize and sink (for the most part), at which point RC opted to abandoned racing.

 

Anyone on the water today get a photo of the boat sinking? I took a couple on my phone, but it may be a while until I figure out how to upload them...

Go Rumor. Seems they're really on lately. Too bad about that keel and I hope everyone is ok, but that shouldn't happen in 20+ kts. Can't wait to see some pics.

Nope, no J24s. There's a reason they call it "sprit" fest. I believe it was a local boat called Skilligallee (sp?) that sank, hull number 21. They broached repeatedly during the last leg, it looked like maybe they were in over their heads, considering the conditions. And no, 352 did not show, even though his boat is on the trailer and ready to go, about 15mi away...

 

And for the J80s, Angry was 4th and Crush was 5th. If Klingler had made the skipper's meeting and knew that the finish line had been moved, maybe he would have beat the Storks... the 109s finished first, so it was fun to watch in any case.

 

And seriously, just because I'm a newb, does that mean I'm a 'tard? WTF??? For the record, my IQ is well above average and I have no cognitive or developmental impairments that impact my daily living. If a reference for the diagnostic criteria for mental retardation would be helpful, please see:

confirmed. 'skilagalee' J80 sunk. second handed story, but heard big broach, keel snapped at hull line, holed her and down she went. one of our local sailors in wednesday nights and local regattas. Sucks, glad noone was hurt. good guys on board.

The 80s and the 109s did 5 races. One race Saturday and 4 on Sunday. The Storks had 4 firsts. I believe there were 10 80s racing and 8 109s. Gossip dominated the 109 fleet. Saturday we were racing in 20 to 25 with the wind building during the race. The course was a 4 leg windward leeward and Skillagalee broached after rounding the 2nd weather mark. They were pretty much on one side or the other all the way down the leg. They got across the finish and just stayed over. We sailed over to check them out and saw the keel was torn off the bottom with a hole through the boat. Shortly after that the RC sent everyone in and Brerakwater YC towed the boat on its side to a beach. On Sunday we started in 10 to 12 knots and it built to 17 or 18. We sailed 2 leg windward leewards and got in 4 races. All in all a great weekend.

That is a good looking Sportboat, do they go fast down wind?

 

From what I can understand from many members of this forum these boats will plane at 20 knts in 15 knots of breeze.

 

But only after the keel has been jetisoned. :o

Well I was there, sorry no pictures, but the boat never sank, was towed to the beach where she spent the night and then pulled yesterday.

 

Not sure if they are posting results but Gossip cleaned house with 5 bullets.

Nobody was beating the Storks. They got 4 bullets in 5 races. Kerry got 1 bullet, a couple of thirds and a couple of 5ths. The Storks were fast and consistent.

Apparently she broached several times in succession, was lying on her side for a while intact with the crew aboard, they went to aid the driver who was low and in the lifelines, and then a crack was heard. The entire rectangular keel pan dropped out, water started flooding in, and she rolled over on the other side. Three crewmembers jumped in the cold water to swim away from the hull (but eventually swam back), one crewmember stayed aboard the swamped hull. A little over two minutes later a crash boat showed up, picked up the crew who had been in the water, and then the guy who stayed with the boat stepped, perfectly dry, onto the crash boat. (nice touch PN) Racing was ended. A while later a tow boat came out from Sag Harbor, threw a line around one of the winches, and the hull was towed to the beach next to the Sag breakwater, where a tow truck was waiting to haul her onto the sand. The rig was recovered and is fine. The sprit ripped out during the tow.

Damn, those photos look like something from the end of Shawshank Redemption. Would look much better surround by palms trees.

 

Hope TPI/Jboats issues a statement, if not for anything else, damage control. It would be great to hear from the surveyor whose going to do the insurance job about his take on this. With 1000 boats out there, the info should help others. I know if I owned a J80, I would want to know.

 

Core looks in good shape from the various pics.

 

Any constructive comments from anyone regarding previous grounding or dropping hull #21?

A (fairly) reliable source told me that Kerry and Uzi were among the last ones standing on Saturday night...might've slowed 'em down a bit in the racing on Sunday. To their credit however, they were the first 80 out there, bright and early. But yeah, as they did in KW, the Storks simply dominated. It was pretty fun to watch the J80 finishes.

Nick wasn't with us this weekend - he had the flu or something. Our replacement was pretty darn good though, so it worked out well for us. Where were you? Why no 352? Would've been fun to have more boats out there...

It was funn racing. All of the boats were well sailed and the finishes were all close. Great weekend !

Hull #21 not lookin too good - boat looks in poor condition.

If the interior and topsides look the way do - I can bet no attention was paid to the keelbolts.

Sailing a J80 is like sailing a Melges 24 with everything slowed down about 30%.

 

 

Too true. Sometimes I think about how it's too much work to make some boats go fast. 80's really do feel sticky to me. No matter how fast you go, it seems like it is just about to break loose but never does.

The owner does take care of his boats. That said, having a 3' by 2' hole opened up in your boat, followed by having her sit in the water foundering for a few hours, then being towed mostly submerged for 6 miles, then being hauled up onto the beach by a truck, probably wouldn't do wonders for the looks of any boat, especially one that's been raced for 15 years.

As you probably do not know the boat is mostly salvage because of the severity of the damage. if you had a capsized boat that had a large hole where the keel was what would you recommend doing? My father is the owner of skilli and for you to say this blindly is not only non-sensical it is also insulting. If you owned a decent boat you would know about the attachment a family has to its boat. When other people heard of this disaster it felt as if we lost some one in the family, not just a material possession. This boat originally belonged to my grandfather, and there is no way that i can accept this drastic measure as my father's inability to "take care of his boats". -Q- you are a detriment to the philanthropy in the sailing community. I'm ashamed to have you in this community.

 

Hey Es, so sorry to hear that Skilli is a total loss, and I'm sure it feels like a family member has died. That said, maybe you should go back and re-read Q's post, because he didn't actually insult your father's maintenance of the boat...

I believe that -Q- was defending the owner from comments made in a previous post. That said, sad to hear of the loss of your boat.

Are you judging the "poor" condition of the boat based on the pictures posted here or have you seen this boat in "poor" condition before? The boat was towed on its side for about 7 miles in 20-30 knots with it's spinnaker and mainsail still up. (I assume that it was too dangerous to attempt to cut any sails free in those heavy seas.) Then when it reached the beach in Sag Harbor, it was attached to a truck by a long rope and dragged on it's side to shallow water so the rig could be removed. Then they righted it and dragged it up even further like it was a Sunfish. How would your boat look after all that? Skillagalee was a beauty and well taken care of by her owners.

Notwithstanding that, it's a tough time when something like this happens, and we're sorry for the loss of Skilly. I hope she's replaced.

 

As noted above, I was, in fact, standing up for your dad, in the face of comments that the boat did not look well cared for. I did know that the boat was well maintained, and was originally your grandfather's (who I met before you were born).

I'm not sure which photos were Mindy's but she did take a bunch of photos. She was at the beach after they dragged the boat there. She sails on another J80 and is a friend of the owners of Skilly.

I'm just wondering how the rust formed so quick under the backing plates. The long rust streaks are worrying. Did those really form in just a few hours? If so I'm thinking the quality of the SS is pretty shoddy. Our J24 is a VERY early boat and we don't have any rust stains like that and we've had it swimming with salt water on the inside for hours and hours during big air regattas.

Just guessing from the photo BUT looks a bit like Friday was gelcoat day and a layer or 2 and Monday was the core day with its layers....
