      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Some photos from the start are here as well. Mer's work will be up in a couple of hours.

Report from Nice Pair - bearing 024, 56 miles to go to South Manitou. Just passed Promo, Windancer is in sight as well. We're 10 miles off Big Point Sable, catching all the other sleds.

We've got a kite, full main, jib, wind is pretty thermal coming from 220-240 or so.

No decision as to go inside or outside just yet. We're just trucking man.

I'm gonna sign off for a few minutes and let Mer edit and post her photos. Anyone that needs to talk to me can call me at 248-563-0657.

Thanks for watching, and please make sure to check out the unofficial, unauthorized, unlicensed, unapproved Chicago-Mackinac website at www.chicagomackinac.com - the webcams are running now, and they've got some fun stuff planned. Also, go buy some shit at Torresen Marine - The Sailboat Specialists on the Great Lakes and Worldwide.

It is pretty trippy to be racing genuine risk to the manitous. Any analysis you have for me on our repsective VMG to pyramid point is appreciated. We are just past farwell mi on the 10, going 74 mph. Destination intended to be frankfort then the scenic highway northward, as far as we can, then back down and to the bridge.

The 2 lead boats apear to be at least 2 hours from Frankfort... That's ... well I'm not sure but I think your in Eastern Time so, that's 7pm your time. Plus, they are much further off the coastline, 6mi. Are you guys pulling a boat and putting in somewhere? Otherwise, I'd plant myself at the point near Frankfort. But you need a boat to get that money shot.

P.S..... I understand that the 2 lead boats on the iboat tracker are indeed not.

And fwiw..... I like the google maps iboat tracker better than the other one.

And And..... I got tired of waiting for vid yesterday so I took my son sailing for the first time on a dinghy. It was on my Contender and it was blowing. He said Dad, I see why your are addicted to this. I immediately turned the boat around and went in on a very good note. In any case, thanks for the vid.

Those old J35's are doing pretty good from what I can see. One is not too far behind Merlin. What's up with her?

Were going to miss the last ferry for sure. Reports from hellion on can can are of terrible breeze, impossible sailing.

If you get to L. State Park, good luck getting the last ferry to the island. stayed there last year, beautiful place, but way off the beaten path. Great effort on the photo. We found 'em- but its not the most exciting sight ever...on a bluff overlooking south manitou, we can see what looks like earth voyager headed on starboard gybe toward shore, but still a good 3 nm out and in the haze. Got some reports coming in soon as well, vids of genuine risk a speck on the horizon, etc. Since we're probably stuck here on the mainland, we might try some fugitive shit and walk out on the mackinac bridge to get the leader later tonight. If the wind holds they should be just 6 hours out I guess. Moon is pretty bright too.

There is one heck of a cell about to hit the Island - hail and the whole bit. The weather radar also shows sporatic cells all over across northern Lake Michigan. We shall see who gets hit and who takes advantage of what they are given.

You can check out the weather conditions from the Chippewa on our webcams. (at least until it gets really dark :) )

Windquest is pulling ahead of GR , slightly more than 40 miles out from the finish. Looking at Denali's transponder I'm guessing it is in a car heading up to the island. Unless things shut down - a pretty fast race - not record breaking but certainly not slow.

How can you tell Windquest is pulling ahead? The transponder positions are being taken at different times, and they are so close, it is hard to tell who is ahead.

My guess is that GR is 1 hour 17 minutes to the bridge. WQ is 25 minutes behind. Based on the 9:02 CDT report. (don't hold me to this, I went to Art school)

Denali is losing all that time they made sitting waiting for the ferry. My guess is this is going to cost them big time. All that way and screwed by Scheppler's at the end.

Hippie, gonzo and big country are trudging along at 8-10 knots in 14 or so from 200. Evolution and another 70 were gybing through the manitous at sunset when we saw them. We need to make tracks toward the bridge, its a real race now for us vs genuine risk and windquest, and Mer's in the ladies room of a gas station in charlevoix.

Clean, if you don't want to walk over the bridge, a good shot could be taken from the shore right by the bridge fudgie shop. there's usually good light there from the floodlights, and they have to take the center spire with their mast height.

Thanks for tuning in podrick! Mers on the tracker right now, and other than GR the boats are seeming really slow. Maybe that storm sucked the breeze out of the straits. In any event, we think we should beat GR to the bridge by a little bit, and sinve the fog seems to have gone and the moon is big and fat, we may got some eerie moonlit tripod shots...at least until homeland security throws us off the bridge.

Hey juggy! Great to see you here bro. Unfortunately we can't make harbor- got to hightail it to marblehead to drive a viper 640 at their NA's thurs-sunday. Considering the lack of sleep I expect for then next two nights, I probably shouldn't bother trying to race. Make sure you send us some good shots from harbor k?

On the other side of the bridge now, and there is about 5 knots of breeze coming straight up the pipe from the E. It may be a while! Fyi, it's that typical cold wet mack night- maybe 60 degrees on the giant fridge that is lake michigan.

Clean - I don't know where you're planning to sit tomorrow but a really good vantage point would be right at the northmost point of Sleeping Bear Dunes. If you drive to Glen Arbor and then take the M-109/W Harbor Highway to Glen Haven, you have to take a right onto Glen Haven Rd (there's signs). You can park there and then walk out and there is a really tall dune right at the entrance to Sleeping Bear Bay. My ex-g/f has a house up there and that would probably provide some spectacular shots especially when the large packs come through. Just a thought....

We were just really close to there today - but tomorrow we've got to get to the Island to meet the boats coming in and hopefully find a boat to take us out to the bridge for some shots. No worries Luiz. As I told you, I'm impressed that the iBoat guys did as well as they did, given this is the biggest ever tracking operation in a sailboat race. I still don't like the interface - it's sticky and choppy, and while there are lots of features, they bog it down pretty badly on anything but a superfast connection in my experience (lots over the past day...) That may be a function of the huge amounts of data they're getting, or it may just be that there is a lot more development left to go.

Still, it's an improvement over last year, and iBoat seems committed, so good on them, and good on CYC for making a deal with them to get it done. This stuff is really imperative for building interest in an event. We met some people who were actually crawling the Leelenau coast with cameras looking for the boats. They weren't sailors, and had simply heard about it in the news. Video of them later.

The pile-up inside the manitous is amazing right now. At one point, Natalie J was trying to roll Talisman, but now T is gone. It looks like Bora went outside the manitous - maybe not the call. However, inside might just be worse. It seems that nearly the entire multihull fleet (1 and 2) as well as the trailing half of the 70s and pretty much everyone in group 1 are all hanging out in there together. With ultra flat water, the boats are moving well (6-10 knots), but who knows if that channel will keep working - it sure has been known to shut off pretty much every goddamned year.

I have been watching this iboat Track for the better part of 2 days now. And before that, I tuned in occasionally for both Annapolis/Bermuda and Newport/Bermuda. Other than for the boat groupie, without a clue as to what really goes on at sea, the system is no better than what was available through the French Argos satellite system back in the late 80's and early 90's. What a disappointment...and mostly waste.

Maybe you can help the sport and make suggestions on how to make it better or what you would like to see instead of complaining and just "disappointing yourself for the better part of 2 days".

This is better than 90%+ of the distance events out there. PM me with suggestions and I'll be glad to pass it along.

I'm waiting to hear...

The 70's have started to arrive. Evolution has finished and docked, closely followed by Stripes.

I was not complaining, merely reporting. Since you seek suggestions, let me suggest that whoever is working on the system engage someone like a Stan Honey to provide further development/improvement. As a start I believe there would be general consensus that a report, even if aged by an hour or two, showing all the boats in relative positions at a specific moment in time, would be an improvement over the current system in which all the boats are visible but none of the times and positions can be linked. If you want to go further, how about boat direction in degrees instead of by one of eight compass quadrants, true wind speed and direction and barometric pressure and trend. My guess is this wouldn't be so difficult to incorporate.

I apologize, make that one of 16 compass points.

+ add a link to the boats entry page

+ run the calculation on the handycap, with the projected time left from let's say the last 4 hrs VMG average, then compute postions.

The Tracker isn't perfect. But it sure beats the old 45th call in posting board. Not that long ago you waited hours if you were at the island and days if you were back home for results.

Great reporting, real time finishes, web cams and video, very fun for those not doing the race. Hats off to all those that put this together.

Just to be clear, I agree completely with your assertions. However, we can and should do better. The technology exists. Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

Looks like the CYC site is down. Anyone on the Island with some finish reports? The webcam just showed a finish, looked like Vincitore but not sure.

Can't say I know much about the history of boat tracking, except in the past, boat owners would have to pay $100 or so to have a tracker on board. Hats off to CYC, Torresen Marine and the other sponsors for making this happen for all the boats! This forum should be a great way to get ideas for tracking future races.

What happened to Denali?

From the polar bears mouth.

"We blew our head stay at the splice and its a custom PBO stay and foil it takes about twenty days to proccess a new one so we had to drop harbor springs as well."

It sucks, they were in the lead.

Is this directed at me?

Vincitore did finish about 11:00 am Michigan time. There was another boat about 20-25 minutes behind them. (I think - I was slacking & out shopping) I think it may have been ....... I will figure this out.

There are currently 7 boats docked and Defiance has just crossed the line.

I think the gun I heard around 11:30 was the gun at the Fort - unless someone didn't dock.... I will not leave the finish line again!!

Relax? Wow. You're suggesting this to me? You don't know me, and I have no idea who you are. Nice recovery though.

Just spoke to Luiz and he assures us that the finishes on CYC will be fixed shortly. I think this is the first time I've ever seen Yachtscoring go down.

We are finally back up after a much-needed sleep. Much videos are on their way.
